The Lies We Believe

Rate this book
“Tell me what happened yesterday?”

I shift on the padded chair in my psychiatrist’s office, staring at the abstract watercolor on the wall as an attempt to avoid her question. “I saw my ex-husband, Lucas.”

“And. . .” Dr. Gabrieli prodded.

I don't answer.

“Riley?

I finally look back at the doctor. “It wasn’t Lucas. Just. . .just someone who looked like him.”

“Exactly. You see, our minds are incredible machines but simply put, they don’t work like computers. Instead, they can unconsciously bend our perception of what is real and fill in the gaps, making it possible to perceive things that aren’t really there.” Dr. Gabrieli taps her pen against her notebook. “Think about an amputee who still feels his missing leg, or how it’s possible to see patterns in chaos. Memories are sprinkled with gaps, then we fill in those gaps with our own created recollections.”

False information.

Distorted memories.

Lies.

But what if my mind can’t decipher what are truths and what are lies? And what if the truth is even more dangerous than the lies my mind believes?
***
Riley Bishop is a single mother, working at home as a security analyst to provide for her two children, Sadie and Oliver. But something is very wrong. Riley starts forgetting things—like appointments, where she put her keys, and where she parked her car. And then she thinks she sees her deceased ex-husband while out shopping. But as Riley begins to question her own sanity, her twelve-year-old Sadie goes missing. Soon Riley finds it harder and harder to know what is truth and what are lies as she is forced to question her own reality while she searches for her daughter.

Apprehending fugitives as a part of the SOG team gives Tucker Shaw the purpose and drive he needs to fight the demons from his past. When he’s called out on a mission, Operation Jackal, to track down a group of endangered children, he has no idea how drastically his life is about to change. It’s a frantic hunt as Tucker and his team race to save thirteen children, including Sadie. But when Sadie’s mother comes to him with credible evidence on who is behind the girls’ disappearances, the situation quickly spirals out of control with a final twist that has Tucker questioning everything he knows to be true.

I started this book yesterday and finished today. I could not put it down! Y'all! This may be my favorite book by the author. My heart was pounding as I was turning the pages! This book had so much going for it. The main character's point of view was in first person. It was perfect for the thriller aspect as far as knowing what was going on in her mind. I loved Tucker and the kids! I am so excited this is a series. The ending, though! Incredible!! I will be having a book hangover for a while. I can't wait for the next installment!

SUPERB PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER!

Author Lisa Harris introduces her new Shadow Stalkers Series with the release of The Lies We Believe, a superb psychological thriller. Harris provides readers with a cat-and-mouse suspense-filled novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Family drama, mental illness, child trafficking, child abduction, financial crimes, and murder are only part of the issues Harris has included in her plot. She also incorporates a potential love story if her two main characters can determine truth from lies. This novel is an excellent read as Harris peels back all the layers of the characters and allows you to see the true motivations of each one. This new series is going to be dynamic!

Spellbinding

This psychological thriller grabs you at the first and frankly does not turn loose, because there are other loose ends to tie up. Jace Kreuger, for instance, is still on the loose and an ever-present danger. We have to wait for the next book to corral him. This book could have used a proofreader (I'm available) due to missing words and a couple of wrong words. But overall, it is an excellent read. Can't wait for the next installment.

Fast paced thriller for sure! Tucker Shaw is a US Marshall who ends up getting involved with a case where a mother, Riley, seems like she's losing it after her husband is killed and daughter goes missing. She's either losing it (who can blame her?), or someone is making it look like she is. I really liked Tuckers character! And the way Riley questioned God but ultimately saw that even in the darkness, He is there. Looking forward to the next book in the series for sure.

The story of single mom Riley Bishop and her foray into trying to find truth among all of the lies is a unique psychological thriller that held me enthralled and guessing all the way to the end. I really enjoyed getting to know the dynamic characters and all about their flaws as well as their strengths. Riley and Tucker, the FBI agent, were my favorites because both had issues to work out and both had worthy goals for the future. I loved the twists and surprises in this novel, especially those regarding Riley. And I especially adored her tenacity in taking care of her children above all else. This is a great book and the promise of more books in this series has me very excited. I enjoyed the complicated plot and the web of deceit woven into the story so that solving the mystery of whodunit was intriguing. This book is what a psych thriller should be: compelling, riveting and completely absorbing from beginning to end.
Disclaimer: I purchased a copy of this book and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Definitely a 4.25. I loved the family aspect, the beginning drama, and the psychological aspects. Don’t forget to add the start of a sweet romance. Lisa Harris starts her series with a bang and a delightful book. But what I mainly want to talk about is the faith content. There’s a clear theme of “but God.”
And that is what matters in life. No matter what goes on, “but God” allows it. The good, the bad, the everything. Great book, but even better, great faith content!!

Quick read. It was a page turner but I didn't love this one as much as most. For some reason I'm bothered by the parts of the story line that had no follow through. The guy who was kidnapping girls and left a note, and the picture of a house that shook the detective... I want to know more. The way it ended doesn't make me eager to pick up the next one in the series.

We were just talking in our book group about how certain genres are hard to read because they might hit us as too believable. This one hits a lot of the hidden fears of any mom that her children might have something bad happen to them, that you can’t trust people around you, that things can be manipulated negatively to frame someone innocent etc.. this one however also showed the good that is out there, things you can do to cope everyday and a belief in a God who can turn all things good despite the bad out there. The action and even the faith aspect was not overdone, the sequel teasers intriguing but not frustrating.
Looking forward to the next one but might need to wait until I have time to kill because it’ll be hard to put down like this one.

The Lies We Believe is another great book by Lisa Harris! She writes such great suspense books that keep you intrigued and I really appreciate that they don’t have disturbing details. In this particular book the main character Riley’s daughter goes missing and everyone is working to figure out if the disappearance is linked to a case law enforcement has been working on or something else. I liked Riley and I also liked Tucker, the US Marshal who was involved in the case. I didn’t realize it, but Tucker was actually in The Catch, one of Lisa Harris’s previous books. It was also fun to briefly see Jonas Quinn from the US Marshal’s series!
I found the book really intriguing and can’t wait for the rest of the series to release. There’s still some unknowns so I am definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Lisa Harris has done a good job with the psychological thriller genre. Riley Bishop lives in fear she’ll turn out like her mother, and the villain’s attempt to make her think she is losing her mind is dastardly indeed. Tucker Shaw is a US Marshal who inadvertently gets involved in Riley’s case and is a character I hope the next books will include. He has a story that needs telling. Overall, it had good suspense. Riley and Tucker’s relationship could have had a bit more development, but I was glad they didn’t have the instant love that is so often part of a romantic suspense story. Their relationship has a more believable outcome. Riley’s point of view is first person, while Tucker is written in third person. I’ve seen this before and it works well. At least you know what Tucker is thinking and I like that.

Talk about mind twisting! This is crazy. I don’t know how authors write stuff like this because I’m confused and scared just reading it!

While I don’t like waiting for new books, I am glad in a way that this is a series because it meant that Harris didn’t have to wrap everything up in this book.

I felt for Riley. Her fear. Her confusion. Her desperation. Tucker’s story is so interesting and I KNEW I had heard is game before! He’s friends with Jonas Quinn (from Harris’ U. S. Marshals series). Anyway I am so curious to see what happens with his story in the future books.

If you read Need To Know by Karen Cleveland or State of Lies by Siri Mitchell, you’ll like this book.

Oh. My. Goodness. THIS was a page-turner! Don’t you dare skip the prologue OR the epilogue. I want to add that there is a lot of truth here about the effects of trauma. If you or someone close to you has experienced trauma, panic attacks or chronic stress parts of this book may be hard to read, but will be very informative.

The only thing that kept this from a five star is a few editorial misses that I caught. One biggie was the use of the wrong name for a character. I read the e-book. Hopefully it was caught in other editions. Read this thriller and see if you can find the error! ;-)

I had high hopes for this book. Something was off in my copy from the library. There were a formatting errors, a few typos, and other odd things.

I enjoyed the potential romance in it, but I felt like I was missing something the whole time.

I want to keep reading the series to see what happens because of the epilogue.

4.75 stars, rounded up to 5

Read via Kindle.

I had this on pre-order and couldn’t wait until it was out. It was an excellent book. And that cover!! I have read some of her work before but I definitely need to read more of it.

I love that most of the book kept me guessing and thinking about possibilities. “Psychological thriller” is definitely a good way of describing this book. I loved the main character and her “Mama Bear” attitude despite all that she went through. I also really liked Tucker and I am anticipating learning the mystery of his back story as the series progresses.

I like that this book highlights technology and how it can be used for good and bad. There is danger in the latter and today’s world is ripe with it, even if some aren’t seeing it.

I appreciated and respected that the main character grew to a reliance on God and how He had always been there with her through it all and gave her the strength to deal with the changes, both good and bad.

My only minor things to say were that I figured out the book’s bad guy (not a deal breaker at all) and I felt the potential relationship didn’t have much development for me to fully accept the connection, even if I am happy about it. Sometimes life hands us something we aren’t expecting. (I’m living proof of that with a wonderful husband 27+ years later.)

I cannot wait for the subsequent books. I looooove a delicious cliffhanger!!!

Just under 4 stars for me due to needing a good edit. There were missing words and even the wrong name used on one occasion. This is a short read that is engaging from the beginning. I found it really interesting and intriguing. I can’t wait for book two.

This was a mediocre thriller, the same cliche as with many other books I've read...sad widow, trying to raise children on her own, daughter disappears, here comes prince charming US Marshal to save the day. C'mon, I want something different for once.

I have read several Lisa Harris books, but The Lies We Believe is definitely my favorite of hers! It is excellent! This is a story that I did not want to put down and one that had me trying to figure out exactly what was true and what was not and who was bad and who was not. I am so glad I buddy read this one so I could discuss every detail with someone!

There’s actually not a lot of things I can talk about in this review without going into spoiler territory, so I will just say that this story is very intense and will keep you guessing until the very last page. There are so many twists and turns and things happen that have you questioning everybody. I really liked both main characters and can’t wait to see where the next book takes them. While the faith thread was light, it was a good one and one we all need to remember - but God, those two words can always give us hope no matter our situation.

I highly recommend this compelling thriller and cannot wait for the next story in this series. The epilogue was just perfect as a set up for the next story and literally made my jaw drop! It has me chomping at the bit for The Secrets We Keep!! Please write faster, Ms. Harris!

I read this on KU. All opinions are my own. 5 stars!

I read this novel as a first step on what I hope will be a much longer journey to interact with members of the Christian Fiction Devourers Group, and to understand what sorts of stories the group enjoys.
I liked how the author switched back and forth between first and third person POV in order to more naturally understand the serious internal issues and struggles for the main character, though after a while the descriptions became a little repetitive for me.
I was drawn into the story and often wondered what would happen next. Well done.
For my taste I didn't particularly like that a couple of major threads were introduced which then were not closed by the end, and were instead left open. I appreciate that in writing a series there needs to be a balance between resolution and cliff hangers, but I'm left wondering whether if I read the next one, will that again be the case, and so on and on. But I also appreciate that others may really like this approach!
So, it's a very creative story with lots of intrigue and several key issues to pick up on in the next in series.
More to devour! I enjoyed the story and am glad I read it.

Riley Bishop is a single mom raising two children - twelve-year-old Sadie and six-year-old Oliver - after the death of her husband. When strange things start to happen, and then Sadie goes missing, Riley begins to wonder if it could be related to her husband's murder.

Deputy US Marshal Tucker Shaw is assigned to Sadie's missing person case. Tucker has been working on a task force to take down the head of a human trafficking ring, and there seem to be similarities. Tucker is also surprised to learn there may be a link to a tragedy from his past.

The Lies We Believe is the first Shadow Stalkers book by Lisa Harris. I had put off reading this series as it is told partially in first person point of view, which I'm not a fan of. It is also described as a psychological thriller, so I wasn't sure of the fright level. However, I liked this story and couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I'm looking forward to the rest of the books. The cameo by fellow marshal Jonas Quinn was a nice addition.

I purchased a paperback copy of this book.

Riley Bishop is haunted by her late mother's mental illness and the uncertainty of life without her husband, Lucas, who recently died in a car explosion. Riley's scared she's beginning to show some of her mom's symptoms and Lucas had been involved in fraud stealing investors millions which were still missing after his death.

And then her teen daughter, Sadie, suddenly disappears. Riley's world just imploded.

Written in Harris' trademark fast pace, it's very easy to start turning the pages.

Tucker Shaw, a US Marshall investigating a child trafficking syndicate, is called in as Sadie may have been taken by the traffickers. Tucker's perspective is told in 3rd person while Riley's are in 1st person. This works well.

It's a thoroughly enjoyable thriller with lots of questions, a few surprises which all keep the pages turning. The ending happened all a bit too quickly and easily but leaves us with unanswered questions for the next book in the series.

What an exciting psychological thriller! The compelling prologue hooked me, and I was glued to the pages from there on out.

To say Riley had a lot on her plate is an understatement. She's a widowed single mother of two kids and is dealing with the aftereffects of her husband's bad choices and then his murder, all while wondering if she's going crazy like her mother did. She's barely hanging on, doing the best she can but worrying that it's not enough. I really felt for her. It was like she couldn't catch a break, and things just kept piling up on her.

This story tackles some serious topics - mental illness and human trafficking. It's hard to read about sometimes, but I appreciated the light being shined on these topics. It's much needed.

There wasn't a lot of romance, but what little there was felt forced and sorta out of the blue. But other than that, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to more in this series. Especially after that doozy of an ending!

The Lies We Believe was a great start to a new series. Riley is a single Mom trying to pick up the pieces from the death of her ex-husband, Lucas. He wasn't the person she thought he was, and she was trying to come to terms with this. She is pretty sure she has just seen her dead ex-husband, but her therapist reminds her that our memories are tricky, but Riley isn't so sure.

Riley comes into contact with Tucker Shaw, US Marshal after her daughter, Sadie goes missing. The police start believing that Riley knows something that she isn't telling them about the missing money related to her ex-husband. She just wants Sadies to come home.

I really enjoyed The Lies We Believe and I liked that Jonas from US Marshals is friends with Tucker. I am interested in finding out more about the disappearance of Tucker's brother, Wyatt, and the possible interest that Tucker has in Riley. This was fast-paced, addictive, and great writing, all things to keep me coming back for more.

This was a mistake pick, as I grabbed it and started listening to the Enemy Between Us by Lisa Harris. I quickly realized it was a series, so I went back to #1 in the series, this one. Like many #1, there is a lot of backstory and character development, making the story drag a little. There is a love story, which I am never a fan of, but the mystery within a mystery is interesting.

This is the story of Riley, a widow/single mom who is afraid she is losing her mind, much like her mother did when Riley was young. Strange things keep happening, the purchase of concert tickets, a picture showing she purchased a burner phone, and seeing her deceased husband where he doesn't exist. While Riley is grappling with the threat that she is losing it, her daughter goes missing.

Tucker Shaw, a Deputy Marshall is put on the daughter's case and he believes Riley and does not think she is going crazy, but things are strange. Can he find her daughter, can he prove Riley is innocent?
