Hannah & Hickory From the Land of Barely There- Stephen Cosgrove
I love Stephen Cosgrove's story-telling style and engaging characters. I enjoy that the stories have morals to them, and that they can be read by a large age range and each age will get something a little different from the story. Here is a little blurb from his biography, which tells you a little of his character:"When I can't get somebody to do it the way that I know it should be done, I usually do it myself. There is no glory in being a one-man band, but when you want to dance and there isn't any music, you best pull out your kazoo and start humming." In 1974 when he couldn't find a publisher to do his books the way he envisioned them, he founded Serendipity Press and became author, publisher, sales manager, and after 4 years sold 2 million copies.
Pretty awesome guy, right?
I love this story, with its rich illustrations teeming with detail on every page. Right now, the story itself is too long for my kids ( aged 1 & 3), but there is so much on each page it is easy to convey a story that they find fascinating. As they grow, they are able to hear more and more of the actual story line.
The basic story is about Hannah & Hickory who are gypsy cats weho come to a new school. They are poor, and they don't want the kids to look down on them. So they weave a story about how rich they are which eventually also has the effect of other kids not liking them. One day when the kids follow Hannah & Hickory home to humble them, they realize that they are actually very poor. The big bully then announces that they need understanding, not humbling and announces that he too is poor.
My favorite page is the first one. Farther than far and to the very edge of the horizon was a path bordered in lacy fern. If you walked down that path following the clouds that scuttle across the sky, you would find the land of Barely There. Barely There... a land where birds reel on wind above the weaver willow trees and warble their happy songs. A land where owls stay awake during the day to tell all who will listen about the delights of this wondrous land... Barely There.
