A great introduction to the customs of Lunar New Year. This interactive lift-the-flap book is p erfect for parents and early readers to enjoy together!
It's Lunar New Year and there are so many fun things to do! Shopping at the outdoor market for fresh flowers, eating New Year's dinner with the whole family, receiving red envelopes from Grandma and Grandpa, and best of all-watching the spectacular Lunar New Year's parade!
NY Times bestselling children's book author: GODDESS GIRLS series + HEROES IN TRAINING series (w Suzanne Williams); THIS LITTLE TRAILBLAZER a Girl Power Primer; ZERO THE HERO; I AM THE SHARK. Lucky to be doing what I love!
Getting ready for Chinese New Year is a lot of work! The many preparations are presented in four lines of verse per page, accentuated by lift-the-flap page elements. The last page includes a wheel covering 1965-2012. The inside back cover includes illustrated instructions for making a paper-sack dragon puppet.
Cute book, read for story time at the library, liked the flaps for the little ones and the last page in the book had all the signs for people born up to 2012 or 2013 I believe.
It's Chinese New Year and there are so many fun things to do! Shopping at the outdoor market for fresh flowers, eating New Year's dinner with the whole family, receiving red envelopes from Grandma and Grandpa, and best of all-watching the spectacular Chinese New Year's parade! Introduce the customs of Chinese New Year to even the youngest readers with this festive new lift-the-flap book. This book describes Chinese New Year activities. The illustrations are really nice, not scary. The text uses rhyming and explains why something is done. I like that this has some funny things happening and flaps for the children to open. Also good in the early year settings - the kids can take turns opening a flap. The back has a Chinese zodiac calendar so that you can look up your animal (no description of animal qualities) as well as an activity to make your own dragon puppet. This activity can be done at home and isn't that difficult. For older kids, they can do more of the activity, like cutting. The New Year’s greeting on the back cover is Cantonese. This book allows children to learn about other traditions and an opportunity to discuss similarities and differences to their traditions.
I absolutely adored this cute lift-the-flap book. The book drew me in from the very first page. Joy and laughter is throughout the pages as the characters celebrate the Chinese New Year Holiday. The kids in the book express enchantment as they discover items given by family and friends. That same excitement is revealed to the reader as each pages flap shows another hidden discovery.
The illustrations were done beautifully in bold pictures and colors. Traditional colors are discussed in the book and is evident in the illustrators pictures.
Finally, if that was not enough, the poetry by the author is simple as you would expect from a mostly picture book but it is also done well as I would expect from this author.
