Excellent book --can't understand why it went out of print (this library book was a first edition 1978).
It was fascinating understanding how difficult it was to travel by boat or even sending artwork by boat. Easy to read, a lot of interesting information. He was truly a great man which was reflected in how he lived his Christian life. Helping so many people from America who wanted training in art. His relationship with King George III (born 4 months before West.) the founding of the Royal Academy and his presidency for 27 years. His difficult relationship with Copley. His family life, his dependent children, meeting Napoleon & Jacques Louis David at the Louvre; his health issues (gout); his artwork & how his painting changed things in Neoclassical painting by depicting people in their normal clothing other than togas, and so much more. All the different artist he came in contact with -- Joshua Reynolds, Angelica Kauffman, plus many more . . . I will try to find this book to purchase -- yes it was that great that I want to own it.
This book had some interesting things regarding the court of England and its king in the latter half of the 18th century. The history of the Royal Academy was mildly interesting. I was reading the book for information regarding West's family relationships, and there was little information on that topic included in the book.
