Most people don't ever think about how they think. This books caused me to do that and more.
Lots of the creativity books I've read are either too much to the fluff side, or too business oriented, or too scientific. Here, the author tries to find a middle ground that makes creativity not only practical, but adventurous. From my point of view the book is really about how the creative process is universal across all fields, and how the creative process is much more than just finding creative ideas; it's about all the psychological barriers like fear, pessimism, self-criticism, etc., that often get in the way of pursuing creative change in the first place. What makes this book stand out for me is how the author practices what he preaches. He presents the material in a "creative" way in order to exercise the reader's creative brain. I think the result is that some might find the writing style "unusual" in a couple of ways. First, because it emphasizes the importance of humor in the creative process, the book tries to keep discussions lighthearted while trying to provide some insights on how creativity works grounded in scientific research. And second, the book alternatives from a "left-brain" discussion of the science of creativity to a fairytale-like narrative that is supposed to stimulate our "right-brain." The later threw me for a loop at first, but by the end I felt like I had the tools to take ownership of my thoughts and perceptions away from my preconditioned habits. So, I guess it kind of worked.
Standard tools for out of the box thinking are discussed. They are easy to understand. The biggest message is that each one of us is naturally creative and with sufficient motivation we can really showcase our talent and create magic.
