Adeline is in need of a chance, a chance to get it right more over she’s in need of a fresh start. Along with a companion she makes her way to Cattle Valley – the place where she has just used every penny she has to buy a bed and breakfast. Opening the doors of her dream turns out not to be what she had hoped her arrival to be and before the end of the day – she finds herself looking at the cute bookseller who was right along side a slew of people helping her to set things right.
Adeline is stubborn, she’s not afraid of her own company but overall she is a fool when it comes to looking a gift horse in the mouth. Meeting Melissa has Adeline thinking differently about what if’s – only with shear single-mindedness – Melissa has to take the bull by the horn and make her presence be felt by Adeline.
However is Adeline ready for this or is she even aware that someone wants to be all and everything to her.
Firstly FOOL GOLD was a new genre for me, I have never read a F/F books and if their was one author I was going to trust to hold my hand and lead me through this, it was going to be Jenna Byrnes – so i took the plunge and have read my first F/F book..
Starting off, there is a pacy anticipation that grabbed me from a few pages in and I was more or less wanting the main protags to drive faster to get on with the story. The story line itself was easy with little bits of angst and some minor turmoil tossed in that gave the story a little bit of an edge.
A few story line ran through the story but they were not convoluted enough that you lost track of what the main story was about – Adeline learning to accept that we all need someone in life in order to make it through the day.
Where Adeline was resistant and steadfast in her plan to go it alone, Melissa was just as determine and once she made up her mind about Adeline – she goes about getting the girl in her own way and she is not shy about.
Melissa had all the qualities of a alpha female and while there was a point when her forcefulness felt brash – I quickly came to realise that Adeline stuck in the mud attitude needed Melissa forceful personality in order for there to be any chance of a relationship.
The smut in FOOL’S GOLD was different – as i said, a first for me so i read every word – and my fantasy ran wild with how vocal they were, there was a softness to their time together – and a certain grace that is not easy to replicate outside of those settings.
FOOL’S GOLD is apart of the CATTLE VALLEY series of books and as such i was inundated with the usual suspects - Nate, Ryan, and guys from one of the local ranch and even a few new names to me. The book itself is a stand along book, however to understand how important the support cast are to the general infrastructure of Cattle Valley – you need to read the Cattle Valley series.
Bottom line
FOOL’S GOLD is a quirky read – I must admit i liked it, not only for the fact that I made it pass the smut. I liked the opposite attract theme that would eventually gel the main protags together – I liked the fact that despite a compact size story Ms. Byrnes gave us a rounded picture of the characters we met, she didn’t force the book with overly emotional language or even funny moment to fill gaps. She gave us a visit into the live of two women who met at a time when they were not only of importance to each others life, but without even realising it – needed each other at that phase of their life's.
