Everybody knows that Boston Terriers smile, but do you know why they are smiling? The forever families of adopted Boston Terriers who shared their fascinating stories in this book know why, and they want you to know too! What is dog rescue? Do all adopted dogs come with baggage? This book is a heartwarming, thought-provoking compilation of true stories that answer these questions and more! It addresses the cruelty of puppy mills and the joy that rescued dogs bring to their new homes. This book is a MUST READ for Boston Terrier lovers and for people who are considering adopting dogs. A PORTION OF PROCEEDS FROM EVERY SALE IS DONATED BACK TO BOSTON TERRIER RESCUE GROUPS. “When I’d come home from work, my Boston Terrier Dylan was so overwhelmed with joy that he would jump up and bite me. To protect myself without killing his enthusiasm, I got inventive and shoved a toy in his mouth from a bucket I kept outside my door. After a month, Dylan began greeting me at the door, bringing me his own toy. On one occasion, I entered the house expecting to find my overly excited Boston with a toy in his mouth but instead he sat there ready to hand me the cordless phone! It turns out it was the only toy he could find. Some people may have been upset about the slobber on the buttons but I considered it “making progress!” - Jami David
Kyla Duffy (BS,BA,MPS) is the president of Happy Tails Books, an organization she founded to raise awareness and funding for animal welfare organizations, including dog rescues and cat rescues.
Kyla became passionate about animal welfare after serving as an emergency foster for a Boston Terrier with kennel cough. That was in 2009. Since then, she has adopted two Boston Terriers and fostered more than 50. Kyla enjoys rehabilitating the tough cases, helping them to build muscle and confidence on long hikes through the beautiful Colorado Front Range.
Kyla is also the founder of Up For Pups, a non-profit organization that helps rescue organizations save as many lives as possible by providing free educational materials and guidance. http://upforpups.org
Ok, I'm not going to lie, I edited this book so I'm biased. My book company, Happy Tails Books, published breed-specific compilations of stories about rescued dogs. The purpose of the books is to entertain, and to raise awareness of, and money for, dog rescue groups.
In my opinion, the book came together really well. There are about 50 stories, total, about adopted Boston Terriers. They are happy, sad, fun, emotional, inspiring...you get the picture. Each story is very unique and the passion the owner has for their dogs always shines through. Here's one of my favorite short stories, entitled "A Gotcha Day Wish."
"It was five years ago that we saw you for the first time. I still remember you looking at us from behind the backyard fence, head cocked with those huge ears. I knew right then we would be taking you home. We may have saved you, Mr. Snicks, but you saved us, too. Our life is so much richer now that you are in our home.
The hours you play with your sister Georgia, and your little antics, melt our hearts. You are our shadow-dog, always having to be near us, seeing what we are doing. Never demanding, yet always eager for cuddles or belly rubs.
Many things about your former life we do not know. You came to us a little fearful and a lot thin. Your ears were infected and you had scabs on your head. You wouldn’t give kisses at first, maybe it was frowned upon by your previous owners. All has been healed in the time you have been with us, no fear of kisses and you are definitely not thin anymore!!!
I was afraid at first I wouldn’t be able to love you like I love our Georgia, but you wormed your way into my heart with your gentle manner. We love you more every day.
I’m sorry I don’t know your birthday, Mr. Snicks. So instead, here’s a “Gotcha Day” toast. “To my “old man” my “cuddle bug,” my “Snickies,” or “Snickerdoodle,” thank you for coming to stay with us. Thank you for coming into our home and into our hearts. Our lives are better because of you." - Mary Hook-Goranson
I really enjoyed these inspiring stories of adopted Boston Terriers by the people who rescued them. If you are a fan of the breed, you'll love this book. Fun, delightful, easy read!
What a wonderful book!! Story after story of wonderful dogs and their trials and adjustments into new families. Anyone who every doubted the wisdom of adopting an adult or older dog would have those doubts eased. I personally have adopted a senior Golden Mix and a Boston Terrier. She was 10 years old. Her owner died and she was adopted by someone who didn't give her a chance. She came into my home and within less than two months she is telling me when she wants to play 'kill the rope' and her chicken jerkies. This book is full of similar touching stories and has the added benefit of helping rescue groups.
This is a book of very short stories about adopted Boston Terriers. I am a member of the Boston Terrier Rescue of North Carolina and I have fostered/adopted before. Several of the stories were written by fellow BTRNC members.
Some of the stories made me angry and sad at the same time. How people can treat animals with such cruelty saddens me. I'm sure they would treat humans the same way or worse if they could get away with it. The people who take in these dogs are the good people.
