Flip-a-Word: Quack Shack

Rate this book
Is that a quack shack? Will the ball stay on the wall? Flip a page and watch a sack turn into quacks with sack and then sack on jack! Quack Shack features these word -ack, -ick, -ock Nouns or verbs from a word family are shown. Single words progress into short phrases ("hot spot") and then simple sentences. A die-cut at the bottom of the page encourages kids to turn - and see a new word from the same family, along with a new image (a b-un becomes a s-un). With playful, colorful art done in the "Hello Kitty" style, each book in this interactive phonics series features three different word families. Word families help children recognize similarities between words that rhyme and connect words with matching long, or short, vowel sounds. Kids can then read words that they haven't seen before. Flip-a-Word takes kids from a single word, to a phrase, to a simple sentence. From there, eye-catching illustrations will lead kids to imagine story scenarios only a child could dream up! Kids, parents, teachers - everyone flips for Flip-a-Word!

Harriet Ziefert grew up in North Bergen, New Jersey, where she attended the local schools. She graduated from Smith College, then received a Masters degree in Education from New York University.

For many years, Ziefert was an elementary school teacher. She taught most grades from kindergarten to fifth grade. "I liked it," she said, but she stopped teaching when she had her own sons. When her children were older, Ziefert wanted "a bigger arena" for her work. She went to work at a publishing company, Scholastic in New York City, developing materials for teacher's guides for kindergarten language arts and social studies programs.

"About twelve years ago," says Ziefert in a 1995 interview, "I tried to get a job as an editor, but no one would hire me as a trade editor. So I decided to write my own books." Since then, she has written several hundred books, mostly picture books and easy-to-read books. "I write books very quickly," she says, "in about twelve hours. I rewrite them three times over three days, and then they're done." She writes about twenty books a year.

This beginning reader teaches the word families -ack, -ick, and -ock.

Bright, engaging, Kawaii style illustrations accompany rhyming words from three different word families. The book's format utilizing a cut-out construction at the bottom of the page cleverly changes the beginning letter to form a new word on the next page. Four words from each word family are given, followed by four phrases using the words.

A note to parents/caregivers is given at the front of the book. The word families, including bonus words, are listed at the back as well as suggested word family activities.

This is an excellent book to help beginning readers understand phonological awareness -- the ability to identify and play with individual sounds in spoken words -- and phonemic awareness -- the ability to recognize that spoken words are made up of individual sound parts.

I like these flip-a-word books. They are easy and fun. In addition to the ending families, this book also used the beginning blends like qu-, sh-, ch-, and bl-. This book introduces the -ack and -ick and -ock families. The flipping of the pages back and forth and the fun of seeing how this changes the images makes it more fun. The extended word bank at the end could lead to some additional fun sentences and maybe even a story using these words.

This is a perfect book for a beginning reader to understand word families. Supportive pictures also help the child as they learn about the section of the word that doesn't change and change the beginning sound/sounds. Then they go from words to short, picture supported phrases.

I like these clever little books. Especially in the paperback editions as they are the right price and trim size for our leveled reader spinner rack. Each page has a half circle cut out along the bottom that allows a "word chunk" to carry forward to the next page. For instance the title page "quack shack" would be presented on two facing pages. One with quack and the other with shack. The cut out would contain the letters "ack" so that the child could see that both words contain the same ending sound.

Isn't it funny that a bag house, a sock and a guitar, a suitcase, a checker thing, a clock, a block, a suitcase, a sock...is that funny that they're alive? And since a chick never gets sick they don't need this blue thing a bag on their head. And why do they have a bag on their head when they're sick?

And that blue thing on their head is a heat bag or cold press. And I love this book because it's so, so, so, so, sooooooo much fun. There's also a book that's cut up. This one's not so it's not so sooooo fun. Goodbye.
