Charles R. Pike is a pseudonym that three different authors wrote under. The pseudonym was only used to write the Jubal Cade series.
Terry Harknett wrote the first three in the series 1)The Killing Trail 2) Double Cross and 3) The Hungry Gun. After these three, Harknett passed the baton on to Angus Wells who wrote all the remaining books in the Jubal Cade series except one which was wrote by Kenneth Bulmer.
The 4th installment in the 1980s Western doctor series and possibly the best in the series so far. I really enjoyed the part of the book where Jubal 'settled down' and became a regular doctor in the wild west, making friends, building his practice and treating the locals. This would have been a great idea for a book; like a cross between James Herriot and Little House on the Prairie! Sadly Jubal cannot keep his slight psychopathic tendencies under control and the slaughter and body count is actually higher than average. Luckily he's on hand to treat some of the people he shoots/assaults as usual. On the plus side, a Gatling gun makes a rare appearance! Here's hoping he settles down for real in episode 5...
