Someone needs to do his job when God decides to go on vacation, a lot that falls upon crane operator Birger “Pirjeri” Ryynäinen. A certain amount of disasters is to be expected.
Auta armias is a Finnish exclamation of exasperation. It can be translated to Heaven Help Us, which is a faithful version of the original statement, though 'good grief!' is perhaps more often used in the same circumstances. This review is, however, based on the edition sporting the translation Herre min hatt, or the Norwegian edition if you like. This reviewer does not possess any noteworthy understanding of Finnish and so must judge this book in another language, a choice which by default fell on the reviewer's own (since there existed no English editions at the time this review was written.) There is a very real possibility that some nuances have not survived the transfer to Norwegian, but then again the two cultures are relatively close and hopefully that means that whatever nuances have been lost are few and minor.
One of the things that Norway shares with Finland is a fondness for making up liar's tales, or tall tales as they are called in literary terms. They can be highly implausible or downright impossible, yet they aim to hold such wit and captivation that the audience wishes they were true. No one truly believes them, of course, but the storyteller, or liar if you will, must nevertheless be prepared to swear to their authenticity if confronted, and wear a telling smirk which communicates the very opposite.
Heaven Help Us aims to be precisely such a tale, and while it pretends to be nothing but factual it still winks underhandedly to the reader from the very first paragraph, which does nothing less than describe God himself:
God is a dashing man. He is 178 centimetres tall, the body is well proportioned, a bit stocky, the posture proud. The facial features are clean, the nose straight, the forehead long. God does not have protruding ears, and he gets no earwax in them. Neither does he have a beard or moustache. He has brown hair, it is straight and parts on the right side. The hair is rather short, there are a few grey hairs at the temples. Still he does not come across as particularly old. (p. 5, reviewer's own translation)
The text goes on to describing his wardrobe at a ridiculous length – e.g. apparently his shoe size is 42 (US 9, UK 8) and he wears short underpants – followed by a short presentation of his lack of bodily functions, then describing his charismatic demeanour, and finally ending by talking about his family, whose sole other member is off somewhere partying with the son of the Finnish god of thunder. By this time the book has made it abundantly clear that its seriousness is only a pretended one.
In any case, God is a busy man. Making man in his own image seemed like a good idea at the time, but they have caused nothing but trouble, leaving God and his Heavenly Host to continually untangle the problems they get themselves into. The situation quickly grew out of hand, vastly exceeding God's capability to help, which led to him only answering the most pious of prayers and discarding the rest. He has been keeping this up for hundreds of millennia; no wonder God is exhausted, he needs a vacation. But that means he needs a substitute while he is away. The angels told him hell no since they are fully aware of how bad the workload is, and so God figured that perhaps he could set a human to tidy up after their own mess. Poor Birger Ryynäinen is headhunted for the job, sometimes it does not pay to be a devout crane operator. (Crane operators are devoid of vertigo, which is a prerequisite if one is to work from Heaven.) That disasters will follow is a given, the question is just which.
The premises of this novel are outrageous and therefore an excellent basis for a tall tale. Its language is simple and condensed, with a style that belongs to the oral traditions of the working class; the liar's tale is after all a tale of the people, an equivalent of the Shakespearian comedies but yet an antithesis as far as the wording is concerned. It even bears marks of a writing process that is based on improvisation, precisely like a liar doing his best to convince (yet undeceive) an audience of a story he invented then and there. Improvisation is, of course, a risky undertaking and even experienced liars sometimes stumble – alcohol is usually involved in such events so the consequences rarely amount to more than a brief ridicule, which counts for little if one has no problem laughing at one's own faults – and it is this reviewer's subjective opinion that Heaven Help Us does indeed stumble at times.
The greatest flaw of the book is its inability to follow up on its brilliant premises. It is a lie on a grand scale and so one would expect the consequences to live up to that, but it seems that at the time of writing the author/storyteller did not have the inspiration to create so grand repercussions. In other words, it failed to make enough of an impression that this reviewer wished that the story was true, which is after all the hallmark of a great tall tale. The book is also flawed in one more sense and that is related to the comedy used. The comedy of a tall tale is deadpan yet frivolous and light-hearted. It can and often does ridicule real people or other real parts of society, but it needs to retain an underlying tone which lets the listener/reader know that the comments are not truly made with seriousness, and there are places where Heaven Help Us breaks with this by coming off too strongly against certain people and religions. It should be noted that most of these instances could likely have been solved by being worded in a slightly different manner, it may be nothing more than a few nuances that are off, and that opens for the possibility that this flaw appeared in translation and that my complaint is only relevant to the edition I read.
A more favourable trait of improvised writing is that it is unpredictable and stories written in such a manner mostly avoid being typical. They become capricious and idiomatic, prone towards being original rather than repetitions of previous works. The books by Paasilinna are all like this and picking up one of his works for the first time is a good cure for those who are tired of the rote. There are better places to begin exploring his authorship – Hurmaava juokkoitsemurha (A Charming Mass Suicide) and Rovasti Huuskosen petomainen miespalvelija (Reverend Huuskonen's Beastly Manservant) are two excellent suggestions in that regard, neither of which have English translations, unfortunately – but if deviancy from the humdrum is what you seek then Heaven Help Us is indeed one of the most deviant among them. It has its flaws, but it also has much to offer those who are willing to forgive them.

Als Hörbuch:
Der christl. Gott ist total überarbeitet und braucht eine Pause. Pirjeri denkt, daß er die Arbeit Gottes besser machen kann. Und er bekommt diese Chance: während Gott in den Urlaub fährt, hat er die Möglichkeit zu beweisen, daß er die Welt besser lenken kann und die ganzen Probleme der Menschheit zu lösen vermag. Natürlich stellen sich dann hier aber auch Grenzen ein: dem Problem der Übervölkerung bspw. darf man nicht mit vermindertem Sextrieb der Männer abhelfen - die Schweden würden sonst aussterben. Seine beiden "Chefengel" wollen den Himmel nicht aus Bulgarien nach Finnland verlegen und der patriarchische Moses verträgt sich nicht mit Gabriel und Petrus. Die Lebensgefährtin des Aushilfsgottes ist schwanger, die asiatischen Götter wollen die Einmischung des christlichen Gottes nicht und komplimentieren ihn aus Kalkutta heraus, der finnische Wassergott entpuppt sich als verkleideter Satan, ein jap. Engel steigt zum Heiligen auf, um den Freund des neuen Gottes schützen zu können und die Digitalisierung der Bearbeitung der eintreffenden Gebete muß auch einige Hürden durch einen satanischen Virus überbrücken. Die Gebete einer Sau führen zum Himmel für Tiere. Die eingeführte Bürokratie zur Organisation des Himmels ist für viele Engel gewöhnungsbedürftig und der Stuhl Gottes geht merkwürdige Wege beim Umzug. Auch der Überwurf mit dem Papst wird angesprochen - anscheinend entsprechen die konservativen Ansichten des Katholizismus nicht Gottes Wünschen.
Hier werden Götter wieder wie in früheren Zeiten vermenschlicht und mit Schwächen, Fehlern und Charakter dargestellt. Der christliche Gott ähnelt eher dem launischen und bärbeißigen Gott des frühen alten Testaments und die Engel intrigieren wie früher auch. Keine fatalische Religiosität, sondern eine Geschichte wird auf menschliche Art erzählt.
Die angenehme Sprecherstimme hilft, die ganze Zeit interessiert zuzuhören und das Hörbuch zu genießen.
Fazit: durchaus hörenswert.

Ook al blijf ik onverminderd grote fan van Paasilinna, toch vind ik dit een van zijn mindere boeken.
Ook in dit boek combineert hij maatschappelijke en wereldse problematieken met een humor die de Finnen eigen is. Een heilig recept, heeft hij hiermee ontwikkeld.
In "wees genadig" wil God graag een jaartje vakantie nemen. Hiertoe zoekt hij een waardige vervanger: een kraanman uit Finland. Die beslist om de hemel te verhuizen van Bulgarije naar Finland en het werk van de engelen ook direct te moderniseren. Tegelijkertijd staat hij voor de uitdaging het werk van de duivel te bestrijden en zijn beste vriend in het gareel te houden.
Voor wie houdt van absurditeit met inhoud.

Eine von der Idee her gute Idee - aber diesmal hapert es an der Umsetzung. Ich mag Paasilinnas schwarzen Humor normalerweise sehr gerne und liebe seine Bücher. Dies hier hat mich aber nicht wirklich gepackt. Stellenweise ist es wirklich gut und bringt mich zum Schmunzeln oder Nachdenken, aber alles in allem ist das Buch schwach, vermag mich nicht zu fesseln. Und das Ende kommt dann sehr überraschend und irgendwie auch nicht überzeugend, lässt für mich zuviele Fragen offen und scheint nicht durchdacht.

Kómisk sýn á ástandið í Himnaríki þegar Guð neyðist til að taka sér frí vegna vinnuálags. Sem afleysingarGuð verður alger nýgræðingur öllum að óvörum. Sérvitri Finninn Pirjeri Ryynänen ætlar sér að redda málunum á meðan Guð skreppur frá en við tekur þrautaganga stöðugrar átaka við Skrattann, staðnað stofnanabákn Himnaríkis og síðast en ekki síst staðsetning Himnaríkis sjálfs.

Ein Buch mit einem sehr vielversprechenden Titel, das diesen leider nicht einhält.
Ich fand das Buch ziemlich langweilig und es hat mich nicht gepackt (einen ganzen Monat um knappe 300 Seiten zu lesen...).
Die Charactere waren schon ganz nett und die Idee ist außergewöhnlich, ein Mensch wird für ein Jahr zu Gottes Stellvertreter. Dennoch habe ich das Gefühl, dass nichts geschehen wäre.
Ich würde dem Buch 2,5 bis sehr nett gemeinte 3 Sterne geben.
Ich fand das Buch ziemlich langweilig und es hat mich nicht gepackt (einen ganzen Monat um knappe 300 Seiten zu lesen...).

Jag kan inte påstå att jag tyckte den här boken var särskilt givande. Inte ens som en rolig berättelse. Den var snarare tramsig och det kändes som att den var skriven för barn, om än med ett vuxet innehåll emellanåt.

Paasilinna menehtyi jokin aika sitten. Päätin katsoa löytyykö kirjahyllystä Paasilinnaa. Löytyihän sieltä viisikin eri teosta, kaikki lukematta. Ryhdyin lukemaan Auta armiasta: Mielenkiintoista tekstiä, parodiaa, ajankohtaisia asioita, mielikuvitus laukannut, erilaista. Hyvä romaani, mutta...

Kuten aina vanhemmilla kyläillessä yli vuorokauden, nappaan hyllystä kirjan ja koitan saada luettua ennen kyläilyä.
Auta armiaassa oli ehkä typerin lopetus virke koskaan ikinä mistään kirjoista, mutta muuten kirja oli oikein hyvää ajankulua ja taisi pari ajatustakin herättää uskonnoista.

Boží knížka! Vysvětluje, proč jsou na světě války, že i Bůh má už lidstva plný zuby, ale že se se zlem musí postupně, po kouskách, bojovat. Asi se autor trefil tak moc, až si ho Bůh zavolal. Škoda, že Paasilinna už nic nenapíše.

Önnur bók höfundar sem ég les (hlusta á) eftir að hafa kynnst honum nýverið og heillast af bókinni "Ár Hérans". Þessi bók er miklu síðri í mínum huga þó að hugmyndin bjóði upp á spennandi úrvinnslu. Hér upplifði éggof mikla pólitík/predikun og fannst höfundur alls ekki ná góðu flugi eins og í fyrrnefndri bók. Lagði hana frá mér.

Der Titel hat mich neugierig gemacht, allerdings zu viel versprochen.
Insbesondere die Satzstruktur hat mir das Lesen schwer gemacht.
Insbesondere die Satzstruktur hat mir das Lesen schwer gemacht.

Er, der liebe Gott, ist einer weiten und langen irdischen Melancholie verfallen und möchte Urlaub machen. Da seine beiden Himmelskanzleichefs den Vertretungsjob nicht übernehmen möchten, wird eine irdische Aushilfe gesucht und im Finnen Birger Ryynänen gefunden, der für ein Jahr die Gottesarbeit übernehmen soll.
Recht locker aber stets sozialverträglich sind die Umgangsformen im Himmel und der dazu gehörenden Verwaltung beschrieben. Auch die Abenteuer, die wohl als Ideensammlung des Autors auf Karteikarten über Jahre gesammelt wurden und sonst in keinem anderen seiner Bücher einzusetzen waren, sind recht nett. Aber irgendwie wurde alles aus dem Buch schon mal in ähnlicher Form aber besser geschrieben. Da nützt es auch nichts wenn die typisch nordische, sprachliche Aufarbeitung großartig ist. Es wird schnell klar, dass der nötige Drive, wie ihn zum Beispiel Niven in "Gott bewahre" aufnimmt, absolut fehlt. Das Ende ist plötzlich, schnell und alles andere als originell - als ob der Verleger dem Autor gesagt hat: "bitte schreib mir ein Buch mit mindestens 282 Seiten", woraufhin dieses Werk mit 283 Seiten entstand.
Das Buch zieht sich spätestens ab der dreißigsten Seite und sollte nur bei absoluter Langweile gelesen werden.

Vrolijke roman met het volstrekt originele gegeven dat God, die met de hele hemel in een burcht in Bulgarije woont, op vakantie wil en een mens wil aanwijzen als dienst plaatsvervanger. De keuze valt uiteindelijk op de vrome Finse hijskraanbestuurder Pirjeri Ryynänen, die na een korte inleiding zich vol overgave aan zijn taak wijdt.
Paasilinna schetst een verbazingwekkend aannemelijke hemel met een bureaucratisch apparaat van engelen en heiligen en bijbehorend gekonkel. Ryynänen komt snel achter de beperkingen van de goddelijke macht, hij moet rekening houden met talloze goden en subgoden (zo strandt zijn missie in Bangladesh op de Hindoegod Tsisjva) en met een zeer actieve Satan die al het kwaad in de wereld veroorzaakt.
Vrolijk betrekt Paasilinna enkele bekende personen en gebeurtenissen in zijn relaas, dat vol goedmoedige humor zit en leest als een trein.

Humoristisch boek waarin Paasilinna spot drijft met alles en iedereen. Het verhaal gaat over een eenvoudige Finse kraandrijver, Pirjeni, die van de een op de andere dag wordt aangewezen als Gods tijdelijke plaatsvervanger.
Quote: "Ze besloten geen ruchtbaarheid te geven aan de vacature. Gezien het menselijk karakter viel te verwachten dat een groot deel van de mensheid ernaar zou solliciteren, en alle Duitsers in ieder geval."
Het begin van het boek vond ik spannend, komisch en veelbelovend. Really liked it. Maar halverwege bleef voor mij de interessante wending toch uit.

2.5 ster (maar dat kan helaas niet). Boek over een Fin die wordt uitgekozen om God een jaar te vervangen, omdat God met vakantie wil. Deze man probeert vervolgens de hemel enigszins te reorganiseren en een paar van zijn idealen te bereiken (wereldvrede, onder andere, en een hemel voor dieren). Een grappig boek, leest lekker weg, maar niet meer dan dat.

My knowledge of finnish authors before this was the Mummitrollet books of Tove Jansson. I've read lots of swedish and norwegian books, but never anything from Finland. Well, I loved this book. It was funny, and easy to read. Even though it's rather uncommon from what I'm usually reading.
