This insightful book teaches us how to help children who have had a parent or family member who has been diagnosed with cancer. When a parent is diagnosed with cancer, the illness and treatment can be stressful for the whole family. Parents almost always express the concern for the well-being of their children. This booklet is easy to use and touches on how to support children without burying the information in pages of explanations. The material in this book was developed by Certified Grief Therapist, Izetta Smith, M.A. with the assistance of parents, caregivers and professionals helping children in their adjustment to the cancer diagnosis of an adult family member.
I loved this and will read it again and again and again! My son was 16 months old when I was diagnosed so he was more of an infant and didn’t have language. It’s now 6 months later and his world is shaped around many things - including his mom often being very sick so now we need to start talking to him. As he’s grown, our language needed to be caught up with him and this book was AMAZINGLY helpful in accomplishing that.
This should be the first thing anyone puts into the hands of a parent after receiving a cancer diagnosis. It is clear, and succinct, and provides the kind of blueprint (with scripts) that you need when your mind is reeling from diagnosis and you still need to support the young people in your life.
