Rose Doyle is a writer and journalist. Her novels include Fate and Tomorrow (set in the Congo in 1902) and Shadows Will Fall , both international bestsellers. In 2005 she contributed to New Island's successful Open Door series with The Story of Joe Brown. Heroes of Jadotville: The Soldiers' Story was published in September 2006. Comdt Patrick Quinlan, who led the Irish UN troops at Jadotville, was her uncle.
These "Open Door" books are primarily aimed at those struggling with literacy with the aim of encouraging them to read. To this end they have specific guidelines to adhere to which are ...& I quote... a discernible plot; a few, well-developed characters; simple language with the occasional challenging word; and short chapters, to create the feel and structure of "regular" novels. All the texts are 10,000 words or less and sentences are kept short."
Well whoever they are aimed at I haven't read a duff one yet & this is no exception. A quick & easy with a nice twist in it & I for one enjoyed it.
The way the characters develop is unreal, almost like an onion revealing a layer under the layer you thought you knew so well.
Joe has a secret past he doesn't want people to know about because he reformed his ways and then meets Julia, who becomes his landlady. In the end, each timely coincidence is not out of serendipity but a perfectly, methodologically executed series of steps, and that twist in the end is so out of this world.
If you like mystery, short reads, or anything that keeps you at the edge of your seat, definitely check this one out.
Another quick read of the Open Doors Series, I have really loved reading this series of books and really enjoyed this particular story. A very interesting plot. It started with Joe Brown who wants to forget about all his past but unluckily for him, he finds a woman who will turn his will upside-down.
The beautiful Julia Ryan became his landlord, and like a terrier she would not stop until she had pulled Joe's life apart re reveal his deepest and darkest secrets.
This was a four star read for me, would have been a five if it was a full length book and not a simple novella.
A book with very interesting plot. It started with a man who want to forget about all his past but unluckily find a woman who will turn his will upside-down. The plot is interesting since it go forward until he meets his landlady and then going backward after he met the landlady husband's friends. It cannot be guessed until it reach near the ending part what past experience that actually Joe Brown want to hid. It ended unexpectedly. Good book for a short storied book which I finished in 30-minutes while waiting for festival in Kerry County Library in Tralee.
This was a quick little novel with enough drama and mystery to entertain you while reading it. It would be nice to have a second part to the novel due to the ending.
