Truth or Dare Proof

Rate this book
Lisa and Becka are ordinary girls. They've both got things in their lives they'd like to forget. But when the owner of the flat they're borrowing (without her permission) goes missing, things start to spiral and the girls take to the road on what might be the trip (the last trip) of a lifetime.

They break the rules. They make up their own. They lie, cheat and panic in equal measure. It's a story about London, Glasgow, Belfast and Dublin. Drink, drugs, bleached hair and bad disguises. Idle fun, stolen millions and running for your life.

Truth of Dare is a rollicking road movie of a book, an exhilarating, funny and poignant novel of female friendship, family... and premeditated murder.

Born in Edinburgh. I'm a complete swot - love books always have! Currently obsessed with late Georgian/ early Victorian culture, the subject of several of my novels, and with 1950s Britain for my Mirabelle Bevan murder mystery series set across the UK - and even one in Paris. Occasionally write tie-in books for historical dramas on TV, children's picture books and short stories, mostly for charitable causes.

It was my first ARC ever, and after reading the blurb, I was expecting it to be good, not for it to be so dull that I had to drop it at the end chapter two (after a quick skim through the chapter to find something interesting). Other than saying the second chapter was a huge info dump and the first wasn't any better, I think I'm in no position to judge the book in any way, because, hell, I only read a very tiny bit of the book! I'm sorry, I really wanted to like Truth or Dare, but I couldn't :(

A different book of Sheridan's than I have read before. An easy page turner that has enjoyable journey round from London, Glasgow, Belfast and the Ireland. Maybe not deep thinking but captures the heady lives of 20 somethings making it big in the city and touches on what impact the Troubles may have had on some of the residents.

More than a bit unbelievable

I started off enjoying this but it became more & more far fe.etched & I just stopped caring about the characters. Shame.

I am afraid that this was quite a disappointing read for me. I read it, but it was by sheer brute force. It started slow, got slower, then got even slower and finally hit a crescendo in the last 15 pages to make it somewhat interesting, but not anything I would recommend; which I HATE to say because it was provided to me as an ARC and I was really hoping to have good things to say about it.

I can say that some of the problem was distractions, the book is written in a regional dialect and should you not BE from that region you are fairly lost throughout most of the book. A reference section REALLY NEEDS TO BE INCLUDED in a book with this type of language patterns. It took me half an hour to figure out what "tupped" meant, I thought that perhaps it was a reference to a poor tipper, was there not an old British coin called a Tuppence at one time? When I looked through the plethora of references to what it COULD mean and decided what she meant by the flow of the conversation, first I blushed and then I felt satisfied that I had finally after nearly 3/4 of an hour spent trying to figure out what she meant, I knew what was going on. I am not one of those people that will just skip a word I do not know and blindly go forward figuring that it won't matter. There were several similar instances that proved extremely frustrating and even more so with a book so dry that I was literally forcing myself to finish it out of a feeling of commitment.

Another issue would be the differences in editing, I suppose. In the book she used (-) hyphens in places where in these united States of America we would us an Em Dash (—). I knew to expect the differences between how y'all use..ohhh lets say realise where we say realize, but some of the thing like "learnt" and a few other similar such word spellings left me wondering if it was the difference between grammar/spelling styles on sides of "the pond," or if the author was using horrible grammar. After seeing several such instances, I finally determined it must be another of the differences in writing styles between the UK and America.

My main complain though, was just how slowly the plot developed (was there ever even one actually established?) and how dreadfully long it took to ever get to anything interesting. The dialogue was not particularly well written, but that is an extremely common problem and no surprise—I could easily have forgiven it had there of been anything of significant value being discussed other than mindless banter between characters in an effort to fill space and add pages.

I would like to note, that this WAS an ARC provided to me by the publishers for review and that my understanding is that this is a re-release of the author's [Author: Sara Sheridan] first book and judging from her other reviews, her writing has OBVIOUSLY gotten much better and she has grown exponentially as a Published Author.

I've started reading this weeks ago, and can't force myself to finish it..I tried, a lot of times in fact.. I just can't, the story was too different from the blurb, or maybe it's one of the It's not you book, it's me kind of thing, regardless, I really think I'll hate myself if I push myself to read this..

I didn't want to DNF yet.. So I'll just put it on hold for now..

Een boek dat heel langzaam op gang komt. Langdradig geschreven en niet zo spannend als ik had verwacht, geen aanrader!
