After leading a sheltered life for sixteen years, Nikhil, Bertie, Randy and Maachh are thrust into the world of the National Defence Academy. Soon they realize that life here is not just about spit and polish but six terms of adventure and achievement. It is about soaring ambition and tough challenges, a punishing regimen and endless Puttie Parades. However, rugged training and severe ragging cannot keep their spirits down for long. Weaving yarns about imaginary girlfriends, bragging about their escapades and sexual exploits, they turn from greenhorns to tough soldiers. United by their experience, these comrades-in-arms form a bond for life. Tanushree Podder, in this tongue-in-cheek saga of youth, camaraderie and growing-up, skillfully reconstructs life at NDA where boys become men of honour.

One of the very few books written on life of cadets at NDA. Any officer who has braved the training at any military institute be it NDA, IMA or OTA will be able to reminiscence about his own training days as cadet, days which were full of tough training and punishments. The book also brings about the camaraderie that develops within a close group of cadets who share the same hardships, fears, sorrows and joys as part of their squadron. Excellent book, lucidly written. A tribute to each cadet and their esteemed ustaads (instructors) at NDA Khadakwasala.
Rarely does a book manages to make me laugh out loud, nostalgic, gooseflesh and moist around the eyes all at once. We seldom get to see this side of the armed forces in our movies or books, but Tanushree Podder, the master storyteller that she is, just manages to strike the right chord in making us wonder, aware and in awe of the lives in National Defense Academy and takes a rather light hearted approach towards the lives of cadets rather than a serious one. I didn't want this book to end, started the sequel soon after this one. My favourite character was 'Maach' and am so very glad he makes a comeback in the sequel ! So done with Khadakwasla Pune, now off to Dehradun ! To IMA !
As far as alliterative titles go, Hungry Horny and Horsing-around would have been more apt than Boots Belts Berets. Except for boots, there is no mention of belts or berets. There are the cliched characters – a pescatarian Bengali, a randy music-loving wanna-be pilot Goan Christian, a debonair Rajput who is a multi-generational Army brat and the self-deprecatory narrator. I found the disparaging attitude towards the ustaads unacceptable – it is these ustaads that teach the callow cadets the essence of soldiering and what keeps them alive on the battle-field – hence the *** rating. The author presents a rather sanitized version of the raw life of an NDA cadet.
An amazingly written novel about life at the National Defence Academy set in Pune. It follows the journey of a normal, lanky teenager who aspires to be in army, a thought that comes in almost any person's mind at some point in their life. However, he works towards his aim and moves on to train for the same. Being from a completely civil background, he has shown doubts for a few Defence terms in the start and finds himself using the same after a few terms at the Academy. This book is a complete proof that life in the Academy has not changed. It was the same as it will be even after fifty years. If you are aspiring to be in NDA, or happen to be an ex-NDA, then this book will leave you in splits. The title might make it seem like a serious book about army, but being a soda also I found myself falling off my chair laughing on the incidents described in the novel. From the cribbing in the first term to the king like lives in the sixth term, everything has been described in full detail. In short, from getting down on Poona railway station to stepping on the antim pag, the whole journey has been spectacularly compiled and compressed in 170 pages. A must read for everyone out there who has somewhat a connection to this institution. At last, a moment of silence for those who saw me reading this novel, and then asked me what NDA was.
It's an excellent coming-of-age story of a few youngsters who got into the hallowed environment of NDA (National Defense Academy).
The book chronicles their entry, tough and punishing schedules, and extreme ragging culture. And it shows the kind of rigor that these young folks go through that makes them daring, toughened, and strong soldiers.
Probably there is no career/course that can transform a raw young man into a such diverse, brawn, and brainy professional. Within three years - they learn extreme discipline, parading, horse riding, swimming, trekking, firing, handling firearms, and much more than any graduate learns.
Anyone who stayed in hostels can relate to the story. Though the story is much more extreme.
The story is funny and sprinkled with numerous pranks that youngsters played among themselves and with the academy. No wonder it is getting transformed into a web series.
Certainly, a must-read for any NDA aspirant (I too was introduced via my niece who is appearing this year for NDA Entrance!).
Boots Belts Berets is for NDA, what Five Point Something is for IITs. This book with its simple plot and good writing is a fictionalised story based on real incidents that gives us a glimpse into the life of cadets at the National Defence Academy.
The book is awesome, the writer has written everything in such a way that it gives you the feeling of being with the cadets and experiencing everything. Everyone should read this
One of the rare books that gives an insight into the lives of NDA cadets and the bonding process therein. It is a fast read and has a good plot though felt that the second half is a bit rushed.
I thoroughly enjoyed thibook. I picked it up because it had such a catchy title and it was about life at the National Defense Academy (NDA) in India. Tanushree has done a very good job at depicting life at NDA with some spicy stuff in there. Of course, it's melodramatic but I think that is essential for making the book like this captivating otherwise, you can land up making it read like a diary. I liked the book because it's funny, fast and crisp. Tanushree has avoided too many details and thus, the book moves on very quickly. I liked the cover and in a large bookstore, it sure does catch your attention. Well done Tanushree. Please do go ahead and read this one.
A must read for all the defence aspirants . Beautifully written giving you an insight to National Defence Academy , its routine , pranks played , friendship and all the things that are still a mystery for the civilians . story of 4 friends , their survival as a teenager and eventually growing up to an officer .
Coming to the book- Boots Belts Berets written by Tanushree podder, who is herself a proud Army Wife. Boots Belts Berets take you inside the lives of Cadets training in National Defence Academy. This is the Journey of four young Boys from the civilian way of living to be a part of the Defence forces. It takes you to the three years’ tough training, pranks, parades, love, punishments, camaraderie, brotherhood, Ragging, roller coaster of emotions, fun times. Sounds interesting? Wait till you read this book and trust me you would be amazed.
Book set in the 1970s, takes civilians like us to the virtual visit of the Academy and inside the life that waits for the young cadets. It is the story of bonds developed between cadets over three years, it is the journey of cadets to be part of the Indian Armed Forces. It is the journey to stand out of the crowd, to be the pride of the Nation. Though the training & lessons they go through are much different than the civilian way but one thing that remains common is the way how those new unknown faces become dearer than family in a short time. with time growing more stronger that sometimes camaraderie comes before responsibility.
Being always fascinated by Armed forces life, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The writer has written it so beautifully that you could imagine each scene in your mind while you are reading it, and that’s what makes a writer stands above others. There is a feeling of thrill throughout the book starting from the 1st day they stepped on Pune railway station till the last day at passing out parade. I am sure you would be more fascinated to know about their life after reading this book.
So, like I always say, go and grab your copy and experience the same pleasure of this virtual visit.
A well-narrated life and experiences of four sixteen-year-olds who joins the prestigious National Defense Academy at Pune where they are moulded from a common man to a Gentleman. From the onset, at the first day of the academy to the proud moment of the passing out parade, the author narrates the time spent by the candidates at the NDA. From ragging to puttie parades, tough training to punishments, bonding, camaraderie, adventure and achievements are an integral part of the three years of every cadet at this academy. While the trainees are homesick during the first term of the course, they end up very emotional at the thought of leaving the Academy towards the end of their course. During their three year tenure, the author beautifully brings out the life of the cadets at the academy having fun and frolic, talks about imaginary girlfriends and the little mischievous courage to act beyond the rules oftthe academy. It is an interesting book about the journey of making of a military officer, the elite amongst who moves on to become chiefs of India's defence staff. Well narrated with decent voice modulation to bring an impact while listening. A must read book for candidates aspiring to join the armed forces.
Written by Tanushree Podder, this crisp, fast-paced little novel is like a few page tour into the life of NDA i.e National Defense Academy. It starts with the candidates reporting to the reception at Pune Railway Station and integrates at their final passing out parade.
The book traces the NDA years of four main characters Pessi, Bertie, Randy and Maachi. Coming from different parts of India, how they are encountered with several joyous, painful, romantic, harsh & mild situations become the most tough and daring soldiers of Indian Defense Services.
The entire story of the book is set up in the 1970's era when age group joining the NDA has been just 16 years. Separating from family at such a tender age, surrounding severe restrictions, ruthless ragging & tough training make readers wonder what it would really be to live the life of an NDA cadet.
The book is not merely diary of the years there. It deals with emotions & feelings of the cadets elegantly. This quote describes their feeling at the time of passing of the parade, "𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬,𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧'𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨; 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐨, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞." Author captured the essence of this feeling beautifully. Don't miss this! Happy Reading.
Picked up this book by mistake assuming it to be a nonfiction and fooled by high ratings on audible as well as on Goodreads. It turned out to be a fiction that too very poor in taste.
Only messages author has conveyed through this is that: 1. Cadets who join NDA have only girls, cigarettes, alcohol, sex, prostitutes and drugs on their mind. As if they live for these things 2. They hate academics, sports, drills, discipline 3. Breaking rules and defying orders of their ustads (training in charge) is what they joined NDA for. 4. Extreme amount of ragging and physical punishments are norm
Does she really want to paint such a picture of these young men who eventually take the responsibility of safeguarding our nation? Do young boys who join NDA with an intent to join Indian armed forces and fight for nation have such low morals and base characters?
It is understandable that 15 something are immature and could be all those things. I was hoping that at some point in the book author will show how these immature boys turn into responsible men with high morals and strong characters who go on to defend our borders and sacrifice their lives in the process. Alas, that never happened.
I'm definitely not the target audience for this. Not only does the premise about the adventures of young men/boys never been of much interest to me, I just fundamentally don't agree with glorifying ragging (aka hazing, which IMO is basically bullying) as a rite of passage which at least the first part of the book was full of. It also doesn't help that the characters kept refering to girls and women as "females" as if this was a paper on some scientific study. The characters were also always "incredulous" at everything. Maybe for other readers these things won't be as annoying and but I had just about enough of this slog.
The story which not only inspires but entertains as well. This is about the life in NDA the premier defense institute of converting asses to horses. Nevertheless the story is gripping and full throttled into reminiscing the past of an alleged retired officer. If u are a military man or want to be one just read it to get a glimpse of the life lived by cadets undergoing training in NDA. Overall the book was good. Definitely not a five starrer as some people have given it. I understand them to be ex NDAs. But anyway a good read.
I accidentally discovered this as it was available for free on audible on republic day. It gives a glimpse of what life inside the National Defence Academy is like(or was like). The narrative is interesting enough to keep you hooked. The camaraderie developed between the cadets, a wide array of things they learn and the experiences they have makes you wish that you should have gone to the NDA. Sure the day-to-day grind sounds grueling, but what the cadets achieve in those 6 years is unparalleled. Overall Boots Belts Berets makes for an interesting light read.
Although I am not an NDA aspirant, I have always been intrigued by military life, the discipline they command, the comradeship, and the Patriotism. I truly envy that! This is I guess, the only book that would give you insights about life at NDA and the bonding process therein. I through enjoyed this book, it’s very well written, but I feel it deals with everything a bit superficially and doesn’t do justice to all of the characters. I highly recommend you read this! I
PS Randy was my favorite character, the only voice of reason and I want to know how he died!?

I have less words to appreciate this book. This is a completely amazing book by Tanushree Podder where she takes you to the lives of 4 young boys entering the National Defence Academy. Their Journey is very interesting, their ragging, Ragda, Mischiefs & Transformation into Gentleman Officers from Boys. If you are a Defence Aspirant or interesed in knowing lives of defence Personals & their Training, this is the book for you!
It was an interesting read where I could imagine the arduous but exciting training that the cadets at NDA go through. Having been a die hard fan of Indian armed forces and wanting to be a part of NDA for a longest part of my childhood, this was a good way to get a glimpse of what I missed. Rannvijay was convincing as a cadet in his narration.
This book is an adventure trip. It will take you to the academy where kids become gentlemen and the leaders in all walks of their life. The author has very well penned all the reminiscences of her husband’s adventurous academic life that , while reading I felt like I was living one. I loved this book from the bottom of my heart. I am very sure that I will be reading it again & again.
Such energy rush ! The book is filled with everything one thought would not happen at NDA, it also shows contrast between how it used to be back then and how it is now.
The book starts with NDA being portrayed as hell and as it end we're all in tears , it has been an emotional ride ! and I totally love it !
This is my first book, which I have read of Tanushree.
This one is inspiring, breezy and coming of age, no matter if you went into academy or not, this will remind you of your growing up days when you and group of friends could take on the world.
It is an insightful book without being boring on one of the top academy across the globe.
A beautiful insight into NDA, being married to one and living with the stories of NDA, a new one every time it’s amazing to read the book and associate to the stories told sometimes over and over again
I can't rate it more the five-star........ i would....if i could...... Written in a playful way it gives you a tour of the academy....makes you laugh, sad....It was like i have been in the academy for moment ☺️
This was one of my first books that I ever read . The hardships, the stories, the ustaads and the ragdaa!!(punishments) reminds me of when I was training to join the Academy. A very easy to read fun novel. Which I assure you won't feel a bit of boredom while reading.
a peep into my future dreamworld. i really couldn't help imagining how fun loving is the life as cadets in the defense academies. incidents you could never imagine, happen here.
