The long-awaited updated version of the first book about the incredible brutal life and eventual murder of Phoolan Devi, the self-styled Bandit Queen, who roamed the ravines of India in the early 1980's, her exploits becoming notorious with the massacre of 24 villagers coincidentally on St Valentine's Day. This is Phoolan's true story, based on interviews with her in prison shortly after her capture, and with the people who crossed her path, leading up to her assassination in 2001.
Growing up I always thought that she was someone to look up to. However, having read this book I am disappointed with her. How could she sanction the rape of women by her gang members after she herself was raped!
This is an amazing story, hard to believe that such inhumanity still exists in a country that has such religious devotion. She brutally killed, yet at the end of the story you can't help having sympathy. The book reveals the prejudice against women that still exists in many parts of India.
