Loving an Immortal was never easy...without her memories it might be impossible.

Immortals, Book 3

Five years of happiness, erased in one vicious act of violence.

Diana freed Alric from his prison and the insanity of his own mind, offering him the kind of love only a fool would deny. Now she lies broken and comatose from a vampire attack, locked deep inside herself where he cannot reach her.

Awakening in a strange bed, Diana has no memory of how she got there. The huge, muscled man leaning over her is straight out of nightmares full of blood and pain. Married to him? It can’t be true…even if her body craves his touch, and the anguish in his eyes shatters something deep inside her.

Alric has no intention of giving up on the woman who never stopped fighting for him. His one hope is that time will heal her mind. But with a demon god poised to tip the balance of power, time is not on their side…

Warning: Contains plenty action, demons from within and without, not to mention toe-curling sex between a strong woman who doesn’t quite know her own mind and a damn hot immortal warrior who’s got the tortured hero thing down to an artform.

Diana has had a hard life. After losing her daughter, she falls into a deep funk. Struggling with alcoholism and depression, she does the only thing she can: she devotes herself to work. Seems following a routine is the only thing that keeps her going. Of course, picking a career dominated by men doesn’t make things any easier. Despite the odds against her, she fights her way through the ranks and manages to make a place for herself doing a job she loves. While the pain of her loss will never go away and she doubts she’ll ever be able to move on emotionally, at least she’s managed to keep going physically. That is, until she finds a savage creature chained up in a hidden section of the subway tunnels. Is it beast or man? Or a little of both? Either way, Diana’s routine life is about to change.

Alric spent years locked in the darkness. Alone and angry, his fury festered until his thoughts lingered on little else but revenge. When fate sends him a way out, he jumps on the opportunity like a raving lunatic, lashing out at the first and only living thing to grace his underground prison in over a hundred years. Lucky for him, Diana is resilient and tough. Perhaps it’s pity she feels for Alric, or maybe an overwhelming need to succeed where she’s failed so miserably before, whatever the driving force, she manages to survive his assault and nurses him back to health. Together, the two of them find love and happiness. But at what cost? Five years later, Diana is a changed woman and Alric is the strong warrior he once was in the past. Life is good. Or at least as decent as it can be when you’re married to an immortal who fights demons, is overprotective, bossy, and domineering. It’s time for the old Diana to re-emerge. Can the life she and Alric have survive the change?

Dark Immortal has a deeply emotionally allure to it. Both Diana and Alric are troubled by their past, who they were, and who they still are. These lingering doubts surface once the fairy-tale life they’d so carefully built over the last five years is shattered by an eye-opening event that nearly costs Diana her life. The story moves slowly for about the first one-hundred pages, but necessarily so. Even though Alric is her husband, Diana’s memory of the last five years is completely gone. Imagine waking up in her situation. As visually appealing as Alric may be, he’s a complete stranger and she’s terrified. Then throw in demons and flying object…yeah, total nightmare. It’s going to take time for her to adjust.

While I enjoyed the story, I found myself getting a little irritated at times by the emotional tug of war. One minute Diana and Alric are rediscovering their feelings for each other, and the next one or the other is contemplating how the other would be better off without them. It felt like one step forward, two steps back. But I had to remind myself that it’s a given for me to know they are married and love each other, even though Diana can’t remember that herself, and Alric is the type of guy who constantly struggled with the darkness inside him. Diana was not the same woman after her memory returned so in a sense, they were starting a brand new relationship, which tends to have it’s back and forth moments.

Overall, Dark Immortal is a story worth reading. I still have some unanswered questions and there are some definite loose ends, but I’m hoping that means there are more stories in the works. Ms. Coi introduced plenty of secondary characters who piqued my interest and it’d sure be a shame to let their stories end here. Yes, that was a veiled hint to the author in case she missed that.

If you’re looking for something other than the quickie, the wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am kind of book, then you just might enjoy Dark Immortal by J.K. Coi. It’s a deeply emotional tale with complex characters to warm your heart and capture your soul. With its fair share of hunky heroes, diabolical demons, and damsels in distress, it’s a story I’m certain to remember for a while to come.

Dark Immortal is the third book in the Immortal Warriors series by J. K. Coi. I chose this book because the summary pecked my interest. I have also read one of the other books in the series and I enjoyed it.

Diana has overcome many struggles in life. Her daughter died and then she struggled with alcoholism and depression to cope with the loss. While she had had a hard life, she still has not let life beat her down. She had spunk. She is an emotionally strong woman.

Alric was imprisoned years ago underground. He was there over a hundred years before Diana found him. She brings him back from the brink. Alric becomes to strong warrior he once was.

The chemistry between Alric and Diana is off the charts. I enjoyed the struggle they both had to not act on the physical chemistry while Diana was getting her memory back. The sex scene was very hot.

What is apparent in this story is that Diana in her relationship with Alric, she lost some to most of her independence in an effort to please Alric. What Alric did not notice was that he was killing a part of her because he did not want to leave the house unprotected. It’s a no brainier that when she lost her memory in the attack she went back to a time when she felt most in control. Now that she has no memory, Alric will have to deal with not just her memory returning but her spirit as well.

I would have liked to see Alric and Diana a few months or years down the road to see how they adjust as a couple with Diana’s new found independence. Overall, this is an enjoyable story and a great addition to the series.
