Super Saver Mouse by Sandi Toksvig and illustrated by George Hollingworth
This is a chapter book following Boris a little mouse who lives in an underground station on the London tube. Boris has a cool cousin called Kicker and a Grandfather called Garibaldi who also feature in the story. Boris has a human friend called Heavy Duty who has been known to feed mice with chocolate biscuits.
As the story progresses Boris finds Heavy Duty early one morning collapsed on the tube line unable to get up. This sets the scene for Boris and Kicker to try to stop the first train of the day and to save Heavy Duty from being squashed. Boris must find where the train is coming from and how to get the emergency stop handle pulled.
Having watched and listened to the much acclaimed and admired Sandi Toksvig for many years now I was disappointed with this book, it has a few problems. The characters are a bit weak and undeveloped and underused. With only four characters, 3 of them only have cameos and Boris himself isn’t very engaging. There are some explanations missing such as why Heavy Duty is called Heavy Duty? Why does Garibaldi live in a Jacob’s Cracker box? There is little explanation of The Underground but assumed knowledge of how it works that many children just won’t have.
The pictures are bright and colourful but due to a lack of things happening in the story most of them are just of Boris posing one way or another. While good they add little to an already weak story.
You can’t help thinking that the writing on this book has been hampered by trying to get this book to fit a formula or has suffered from some lazy editing.
This book would make a nice chapter book for new readers; it’s divided into 6 short chapters which can be read one per session. I think the ideal age range would be somewhere between year one and year two.

I’m moving house and finding all of the books so I thought I’d read through some lol and this one I was ‘awarded’ in primary school for being a super reader during THE WORLD BOOK DAY READING CHALLENGE and I don’t think I’ve ever looked back from that day - cute story though, mouse saves the day!

I liked reading this book to myself. Boris the mouse goes on adventure and has to save the day. I would like to read more stories about Boris. I would recommend this book.
