Clara Goodwin is a detective, currently on maternity leave. She’s married to George, a Detective Inspector, and together they have a young baby, Tabatha.

Tabatha has cancer, a neuroblastoma, and Clara would do anything to protect her child. At a local cancer support group, Clara discovers that a new experimental treatment is being trialled in the US with remarkable results. The only problem is the cost: nearly a quarter of a million pounds.

Clara throws herself into the world of fundraising and raising awareness of Tabatha’s condition on the social media platforms and the local community.

Meanwhile, her husband George is working on a hard case. He’s trying to bring down a local drug baron, Henry Mantel, who always managed to avoid justice.

Someone is targeting Mantel’s ‘legitimate’ businesses… Mantel turns to Clara. Surely, she won’t help?

I really enjoyed this tense crime thriller. I was gripped from the very first page all the way to the end. I was literally glued to my seat, I had to discover what came next.

I sympathised with Clara and George. I can’t even begin to fathom what’s it’s like to have a child with cancer; a child so sick that they might die. I honestly don’t know what I would have done if I were in their shoes (but I can imagine that I’d move heaven and earth!).

This was such a great read for me. I definitely recommend this book.

Couldn’t get into this one.

I usually find a novel that posses moral questions interesting and thought provoking, but in this instance I did not. I certainly have no experience with childhood cancers but I do know as a parent I’d do anything to get my children whatever help they need. So, the book should be a given winner. I just didn’t feel any authenticity in the decisions being made or the actions of the parent/s in this book. I was not a fan of the ending either.

There are quite a few 4 and 5 star reviews on this read, so maybe I just didn’t get it.

Wow, what a book!

I'm already a big fan of Darren's work, and this one did not disappoint!

Kept me hooked the whole way, I genuinely could not put it down!

Short chapters, multiple POVs, and a totally gripping story!

Now, I'm not an emotional person but, fuck, this book had me experiencing all of the ups and downs! I was rooting for Clara & George the whole way. I'm not ashamed to admit I even had a tear at a couple of points!! Maybe that's due to being a mother of a young one myself or just the way Darren told the story, or both! Either way, it got me good🤣

Absolutely banger of a book, highly recommend!

This book is definitely worth 'The Price'! 🤣🤣🙈

The Price by Darren O’Sullivan is a fabulous contemporary crime thriller that I just could not put down. It consumed my every moment.
Darren O’Sullivan has created an exciting, well thought out and executed plotline. As the action heated up, so my pulse rate rose… and just when I thought the action couldn’t get any more tense… it did!
The story is written from alternating points of view and in the first person and as such, we appreciate and experience the action from different viewpoints. I identified with the female lead. I could sense her desperation and desolation at times, as well as the hope she held on to. “Amongst the grief and the worry was hope.” If hope dies, it is an awful wasteland to inhabit.
We follow parents through a terrible diagnosis for their child. The support group sessions are as vital as breathing. “There were no words to help, but having people to listen meant everything.” We all need people to listen when we feel alone. It helps to hear positive words, giving us something to cling to. Conversely if we hear negative situations and words, our hope shrivels.
A mother’s love is fiercely protective. There is nothing a mother will not do in order to help her child – no matter how young or old they are.
We see the strain that a cancer diagnosis puts on a family. We all cope in different ways, but if one half withdraws, cracks will begin to appear.
The sun still shines even when we hear the worst news possible – why does the world keep turning? We expect it to stop… I can certainly empathise with this emotional feeling.
Running in tandem with this personal nightmare is the underworld of the local criminals. Everyone knows who the big criminal boss is, but to go against him is to sign your own death warrant.
We witness what happens when someone has what we need. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
The Price was an absolutely cracking read. Darren O’Sullivan has a perfectly balanced novel alternating between the criminal underworld and the law enforcement agency. We see that life is not always black and white but varying shades of grey.
The Price was superb and would make a marvellous movie.
I received a free copy from the publishers. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.

Clara and George are relatively new parents to Tabitha. She has just been diagnosed with cancer and is quite ill. They are also both in the police although Clara is on maternity leave. She is also sadly left to deal with the daily ins and outs of Tabitha's illness as George is barely coping with that side of things, instead, he throws himself into his work - predominately the bringing down of local bad guy Mantel - rather than supporting Clara. Luckily she has her mum to help her.
And then they hear of a new treatment that could prove key to Tabitha's recovery. In the USA. But it is expensive, even if they could get on the trial list, they could never even dream of affording it. Let alone the cost of getting there. But they start a crowd funder... well, they gotta try... That again is down to Clara as George is more tied up with Mantel becoming the victim in a spate of robberies...
And then it all gets a bit weird. And escalates real quick... And skirts reality. Just staying on the right side of credible. But it is action packed all the way and does deliver the punches necessary to keep my attention nicely.
All this author's previous books have been, for me, five star reads. This one didn't quite hit that high as it didn't engender that level of credibility in me like the others have. Those I was fully invested in the plot and characters, but in this book I did roll my eyes a tad along the way. I kinda get the premise of where you would draw the line to fight for someone - how far you would go - and that all common sense flies away. But... even with the jobs and connections I just couldn't quite get with the project and immerse myself fully. Some of what Clara and George got up to made sense, but the rest, even with the emotions attached, just didn't sit right. Although, who am I to judge being as I am not in the same situation...
But... all that said, the ending did satisfy me - although I cant say why - but it did reward me for sticking with it.
My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

Worth every penny…

Are you looking for an emotional roller coaster?? Well if you are, hop on in! O’Sullivan is exceptional at marrying empathetic characters while writing a compulsive plot.

The first third of this novel is a crime/family drama. We are introduced to Clara and George, both DIs in the U.K. but Clara is currently on mat leave looking after their young daughter Tabatha. Tabatha is battling cancer and the parents are doing everything in their power to find the right combo of drugs to help her.

George is busy investigating Henry Mantel, who he suspects is running a drug syndicate. Clara discovers that there is a life saving drug in the U.S., but the trial cost $230,000! She starts a Go Fund me account to raise money, but it isn’t enough.

Clara girl …. Let’s just say I underestimated you! The tagline for this book is “How far would you go to save the one you love?” Well this mummy runs a marathon. I definitely fell for one of the large twists in the middle of the book.

The back third of the novel will have you flipping through the pages to find out if they nail Mantel, do they raise the money and what happens to sick Tabs.

My only note was that I wanted to get to the main drama a little faster. It takes a bit to get set up then it becomes gripping.

How far would you go to save the one you love?

Clara and George’s baby Tabatha is seriously ill and needs life-saving treatment.

Struggling to cope, George throws himself into his work as a police detective, determined to gather enough evidence to put local drug baron Mantel away for good. But when Mantel’s businesses become the target of robberies, the case becomes more complicated. Especially when Mantel turns to Clara for help – he wants to find the person responsible before her husband does.

Clara is desperate to raise money for experimental treatment to save her child, but is this a price too high to pay?

I'm a big fan of Darren O'Sullivan's books and his latest did not disappoint! The Price is a tense crime thriller and I found really hard to put down.

They story is told from three different view points, Clara's, George's and Mantel's, all in the first person, which I love in books, especially in thrillers. I just feel it gives the story a much rounded feel. And because the story revolves around Tabatha's illness, it did get very emotional in parts.

I really enjoyed this book and if you love a compelling, suspensful crime thriller, then you will enjoy it too. 4.5 ⭐️

Another wonderful story from Darren O’Sullivan who has weaved his magic to write about such an emotive subject of a baby with cancer and what lengths a parent will go to, to save their child.

Clara and George are the parents to Tabatha who is very poorly indeed. George is in the police and seems to mask his feelings by throwing himself into his work leaving his wife Clara to deal with their sick daughter. They need money to send Tabatha to the United States for treatment that could just save her life but Clara is concerned that crowd funding may not quite be enough and so takes drastic steps to help build the fund.

The story winds this way and that having the reader totally behind the parents one minute and then gobsmacked the next at what they are willing to risk for their daughter.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I have done all of the author’s others, and Darren really has done a great job of building suspense with a story that has such emotional content. Highly recommended.

Many thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in return for an honest review.

I honestly don't know how to feel about this book. when I saw the headline "how far would you go to save the one you love?" I was expecting someone to go extremely far. however, did clara go that far? I'm not sure she did.

the only reason I gave an extra 0.5 was for tabitha. i was mainly reading to find out if she made it or not. i probably would've been happier reading about the treatment in philly lmao

thank you to netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

How far would you go to save the one you love?
Clara and George’s baby, Tabitha, has cancer, and she needs a very expensive special treatment. And her parents are willing to do just about anything to get the money they need to save their baby girl.
This is a domestic thriller for which I think you absolutely have to suspend disbelief. It's told in dual POVs (Clara and George). On one side, Clara is desperate and heartbroken, willing to do just about anything to save her daughter. On the other side, George, a cop, is immersing himself in his work, trying to pin down a bad guy (Mantel). The disconnect between the twon parents is real and raw. But aside from this and the poor sick baby, that book did nothing for me. I was only 7% in and I was thinking that that book was about a 100 pages too long, with too many unnecessary discussions, too many day to day tasks. The second half of the book is a little more fast pace, but all in all, it was not for me.
I received an advance review copy of this book for free and I am leaving a review voluntarily.

I found this book so compelling and really hard to put down!

George and Clara are new parents but their world changed dramatically when their baby, Tabitha, was diagnosed with cancer and are trying to navigate what that all means

George throws himself into his work as a police officer to distract himself from the reality, whilst Clara is trying to cope with her care.

However, they get bad news about Tabitha's health and Clara decides to fundraise for her costly treatment in the US which is her best chance

But George's work, their daughter's health and the fundraising all become entwined.

The plot was full of suspense, heart wrenching and cunning. It made me question what I would do to help any of my children and I found myself siding with the parents

A great thriller - all the stars from me!!

After reading the Players by Darren O'Sullivan I have been eager to read more. The Price is so completely different it shocked me. It follows a story, that as a mother I very quickly started to relate too. That choice of how far you would go to save your child, knowing you would do anything for them. No matter what. Clara is no different. Her motherly instinct to protect and fight for her daughter just proves a mother's love is like no other. Seeing the different battles the 2 parent face is extraordinary and fascinating. I found myself hooked into this book without even trying. I loved this story, and the twists and turns that are within it, I found myself shrivelled in the bath and waking with a kindle on my face from refusing to put it down. I cannot wait for more from Darren

Henry Mansel is a career criminal with lots of businesses and who ensures that those who cross him get their just rewards.
Clara and George are both ploice officers, Clara is currently on maternity leave. Their daughter has brain cancer. There is a treatment in the US , but that costs more than 200000 pounds. Clara is determined to raise the money by fair means or foul . Not easy when your husband is currently investigating the criminal that she has contact with.
Not a bad read, some decisions were perhaps questionable and I would have liked more information about some of the side stories (Sophie and her mother). In places fairly suspenseful , in others perhaps overstretching the bounds of reality.

Darren O’Sullivan has written another fabulous thriller to add to the collection. I devoured this book and read it in 24 hrs. It is different to Darren’s other books due to the police procedural element but I feel the author did a really good job of portraying this through the storyline. I love police procedural series so would be really pleased to see a series come from those characters.

The characters were brilliantly written and I loved the storyline which surrounded the sensitive topic of childhood cancer. I’m not an emotional reader but this really caught my feelings with the families plight and the desperation and need to help their very sick child Tabatha.

Fabulous read which gives a twist to a normal thriller with the addition of a police procedural narrative.

"The Price" is a great read as it has 2 simultaneous stories which blend into one. One story is emotional and heart wrenching and the other is cunning and suspenseful. It really is the best of both worlds and the author did a phenomenal job of writing and intertwining the stories together. I however did only give the book 4 stars as the thriller part was a little too predictable but all in all I'd recommend it to any reader!

Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Darren O’Sullivan is one of my favourite authors, I absolutely love all of his books so I was really looking forward to reading The Price. I literally read it in one sitting! I just couldn’t put it down! Absolutely loved it, his best yet in my opinion. It was exciting, thrilling and absolutely made me sob my heart out in places. Definitely will need tissues for the ending. I have given this book a massive 5 stars.

A thrilling edge of your seat page turner.

This kept me enthralled from page 1. Although some of it was a little far fetched with the level of access they had to police information even whilst on maternity leave. It was excellent.

Excellently written. Well worked. As a parent it had me thinking if I would go to the lengths Clara and George did.

Highly recommend this one for all thriller lovers.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I found this book easy to read and got through it fairly quickly. The concept is awful and really makes you think about what you would be willing to do in such a situation.

The twist was ok, but I felt some what predictable. I liked the ending as it is realistic and I was really hoping an unrealistic ending wouldn't ruin the story.

Weirdly, I really loved this book and thoroughly enjoyed reading it, despite the other things I have to say. The twist was not a twist, I thought that was something we were meant to know all along? It was obvious and ruined by the blurb. My copy was also completely littered with spelling and grammatical errors which was entirely frustrating. However, I sped through it and still enjoyed it a lot. It just could have been 5 star and was let down.

It was alright. Not my cup of tea. I picked it up at an open-book fair, with only the synopsis available. The first half was a slow read for me due to the pacing. Once there were connections with Mantel and Clara, the pages flew by. The ending was abrupt, but still had a desirable outcome. Good read.

5⭐️ Honestly what a book! The Multiple POVs, short chapters (always a win win for me) and the twists absolutely 10/10. This is my first book I’ve read of Darren’s and I will sure read more of his books at some point. The storyline was very good, different. Also has an emotional element to it as well. Definitely recommend!
