Lee began her career in the year 1992 when she submitted a story to Tong Li's monthly manhua magazine Flower Girl. The story became her first work, Paradise City and began Lee's long career working with Tong Li. Her second work, Youth Gone Wild, which started its five year run in 1996, was her longest and most popular work. So far four works have been published in the magazine, one of which is ongoing.
Nicky Lee's personal life is not well documented aside from small notes that she writes in the margins of her published works and a few interviews. She is married, without children and credits her mother as her main influence. She is a fan of 1980s American heavy metal music and cites Fuyumi Souryo (Mars) and Shimizu Reiko as her role models.
This was an unexpected indulgence read for an overtaxed brain. Sometimes, I just have to look at pretty drawings and read about lighthearted romance to detox.
This seemed to fit the bill: a story about an aspiring model looking to make it big in the industry. The protagonist Cane Lele's initial motivation to break into the industry is to meet a famous male model whose portraits, to her, are an art form. She ends up meeting his twin brother, and sparks between them fly. However, as she faces personal tragedies, her quest to become an international model has a much different purpose.
Considering that I had thought I would lose interest quickly, I was pleasantly surprised by the story. Nicky Lee's depiction of the modeling world is, I suspect, quite romanticized. But she skillfully deals with personal and professional issues that arise in such an industry. Like much of shoujo manga, romantic situations are lighthearted and a little unbelievable, but this wasn't anything that I wasn't expecting. I actually think Nicky Lee touches upon the dark nature of loneliness and anger better than she does on fluffy romance.
For now, I am up to volume 7 (I clearly enjoy the story more than I let on in this review). I'm not sure if I will continue until the end, but for now, it's a great escapist read.
Rate for the whole series 4.5 Stars. The only reason is not full 5 Stars is because some chapters where really short and it felt like 5 pages long.
This is one of those things you can't put down once the plot develops. It goes further than just a girl trying to be a model. The Characters trap you you can't stop loving or hating them, the art was almost perfect.

Did I mention that I blame Eros for my attraction to men with long hair ?
Hmm...I'm interested enough in the storyline of this to carry on with it, but currently I haven't been pulled into it completely. Maybe with the next volume, if she meets the twins...
The One is hands down one of the best manhuas I have read till date! It was also a bit nostalgic to read because the artwork is similar to Ai Yazawa's Nana.
Interesting 🤭 I love that we’re following an upcoming model and learning about the fashion industry alongside her , the art style is so nostalgic reminds me of Ai Yazawa’s art style 💖
yknow i enjoyed it all in all but it pissed me off seeing so many queer characters and none of them being gay like they all ended up in a relationship with a women also basically zero rep of sapphics but i bet they would be bisexual and end up with a guy too so lol... Also really? the one sided twincest? like ? um anyway i hate angst and i can't believe that your feelings would be unchanged after 3 fucking years like um yeah sure it's that easy to just continue your love dovey romance after 3 years of absolutely no contact. Serious issues are covered like drugs, prostitution and abuse like the part where long's dad basically sells him to those hags was really disturbing. I was sure that after the accident this would traumatize me like "Nana" did but I'm glad everyone's happy in the end tho the end was almost hilariously rushed.
Synopsis: Lele lives with her grandmother because her parents (who were both models) are dead. Lele, however, doesn't care about modeling and doesn't even know who the most famous ones are. Then she sees some super inspiring pictures of a male model (Angus Lanson) and is intrigued, so she asks her aunt, who works in the fashion industry, if she can become a model after all. Her aunt, who cares for Lele, acts really tough and basically makes Lele hate her in order to get Lele to become independent and succeed. After Lele fails her first audition, she runs into this hobo on the street and starts arguing with him... though their first meeting is just as rocky as her modeling skills, they keep running into each other and eventually become friends in a way.
I read this as a break while studying for finals, and now the stress has completely blown from my mind whether I liked it or really liked it... I put "liked it" because there are other series that I do like more that I only put "really liked it" for. I would still reccommend it, though.
One interesting about this series is that it covers a LOT of ground. There will be moments where a banner pops up and says "6 months later" or "2 years later" and they pass without comment. In my mind, that makes it much more believable, because really, how often does a raw beginner meet the super famous guy enough times to become close right at the beginning of her career? Now the meetings are spread out in a more believable timeframe.
I would recommend this to people who like shoujo or josei manga, especially those about the fashion industry or showbiz. It is a little more adult than some I've read, so it probably falls more under josei though.
The art style takes a while to get used to, mostly because the characters look half like manga characters and half like real people which is kind of unsettling. Then plot-wise the story is a little generic...and dare I say too fanfiction-esque? Like the model guy, Angus is a twin, and his twin, Eros is pretending to be a beggar, and.. she meets him and doesn't know it, and it's all very 'circumstantial' and really REALLY cheesy. I want to like it and it's good enough to read in a pinch or perhaps to pass the time if you're hopelessly bored but it's a little blah.
I'm reading volume 2-- I'll see if it picks up between now and then.
I love this manga so much, just thinking about it makes my heart ache. In a good way.
Ugh, a week after reading it and I would still spazz every time I think about it. I have to get used to the artwork for the first few chapters though but after that, the characters were pretty much good looking and swoon-worthy ♥.♥
I dont usually dig guys with long (beautiful) hair but for you baby, I will *wink wink
does anyone by any chance know where I can purchase a copy of this book? I really enjoyed it and would love to have this series in my collection. thank you
On s'accroche vite ! Lu en 3 jours, j'ai adoré !
My first Taiwanese manhua! It's also called "The One" in English, but I'm not sure how they get that name.
I love stories set in the fashion / entertainment industry, which is why the premise of this series caught my eye. It follows the story of Lele as she starts out in the fashion world following the footsteps of her deceased mother. The romance itself is sweet but I liked that it's not the entirety of the story. A lot of it is also just following Lele's progress in the industry as she proves her mettle to overcome the obstacles in her way.
The story itself was actually a lot darker than expected, and there were surprisingly a lot of gay or bisexual characters. A lot of it does take place in New York, so maybe that's the artist's impression of what the American fashion industry is like lol And I swear, over half the characters with a crush on the two twins were male.
The character development was pretty good. Both of the brothers each had a dark past that they've had to grapple with, and it was quite satisfying to see Lele slowly break down Yin / Eros' walls. Angus' character rubbed me the wrong way from the beginning, so it was nice to see that there's a reason for his wild drinking and partying behavior.
The artwork was really pretty and fit the theme of the manhua pretty well, though I will say Lele got a lot prettier near the end, to the point where I didn't really recognize her anymore. Angus and Eros also looked exactly the same to me. At one point I could still tell who was who because of their hair style, but after Eros cut his hair to resemble Angus, I was completely lost.
This is by far one of the most entertaining manga series I have ever had the pleasure of reading! The art is gorgeous, the characters are bold and multifaceted, and the story is incredibly diverse. And that male protagonist? Perfectly flawed, with just the right balance of charm, professional talent, and sardonic snark.
Lele is loveable, beautiful, and clumsy as hell, and simply wants to become a model to live up to her deceased mother's legacy. But the path to fame is never easy, and our heroine quickly discovers how much she will have to sacrifice in order to make her own way in her mother's demanding world. Each of the characters demonstrates real growth, and the ending was so satisfying that this is actually the third time I have read through the entire series! I just couldn't stop smiling! Overall, a sound read that marks the coming-of-age adventures of the modeling world.
4/5⭐️ i finally read this manga, after months of being a decoration in my room… the first volume was so great?! it introduced us to the universe really great. i loved the drawing, this is typically the drawing i love when i read manga (i actually just go for manga from the 200s especially for the drawing…) anyways! the characters seemed really interesting, i’m so excited to learn more about them, and their past! i actually really loved lele’s character! it’s really refreshing to see a main character like that on romance manga! i’m still a little confused about the twins tho… but i’m excited to dive into the serie.
This was guilty-pleasure reading for me. It's about the life of a model, from when she starts out in the career to when she becomes a world mega star. It's also about her relationship with a handsome model show producer. So... pretty much your standard shojo manga. The only thing that surprised me about it was that it featured a diverse cast of supporting characters, which is a rare find in manga.
About the whole series: read this series years ago. Rediscovered it as I was searching for a new manga to read and it sounded vaguely familiar so I skimmed through a chapter to see if I'd read it before. I eventually realized I had but that it had left no impression on me and the chapter I read left no desire for me to even revisit the story. I regret spending the time reading it in the past. Not worth your time.
