I am actively sad I didn't know about this one as a kid! Came upon it at a book sale, immediately clocked it as a book that looked like my era, and found myself thoroughly enchanted by every page. I can only imagine how much my zoo/animal-loving little heart would have loved examining the detail in the pictures, from all the food prep items in the kitchen to the pictures of enclosures to the souvenir stand. (Probably at least as much as I loved Blizzard at the Zoo!) Plus it's just a great look at all the different areas of the zoo and a director's responsibilities, from checking on the animals to overseeing their care with the vet to administrative tasks.
I found this childhood favorite of mine at my parents' house when we were home for the Thanksgiving holiday and I shared it with my toddler. It was a hit. He liked hearing about all of the animals and especially enjoyed the pages that showed the zookeepers preparing food and the Jeep that the zookeeper drives. It's a good non-fiction look at behind-the-scenes work at the zoo.
Our kindergartner brought this one home from the school media center, and even though it's old, we all enjoyed it. It follows head zookeeper Mr. Scott through his day of work, and presents a nice picture of all the different things zookeepers do.
