The illustrations are lovely and show variation in facial features and clothing. The description of life in a small village sounds accurate. I loved the idea that the townspeople came together to save one of their own. This is a rare occurrence in our present-day cities and towns. Students could learn a lot by reading and discussing life in a small village and compare it to other cultures that they may be familiar with. Inquiry into the names of the characters, as well as their own names, may be an interesting class activity.

The inhabitants of the little town of Kosnov wondered why the town butcher put a "for rent" sign in his window and who was Mr. Tinker?
