Personal 2025 Challenge: 10 Popular Canadian Books 🇨🇦
Book #6

This is the book that everyone knows regardless if you've ever read it or not. It regularly tops first place on many Canadian Reading Lists. I just came back from a week-long visit to our little gem of a province called, Prince Edward Island. The highlight of my trip was visiting, "Green Gables Heritage Place" which is deemed a National Historic Site 👒

I just adore this book. Anne Shirley is such an endearing character.

"But if you call me Anne, please call me Anne spelled with an E."

Anne Shirley is an Eleven year old orphan who is mistakenly sent to a farm in Avonlea, Prince Edward Island. The two elderly siblings named Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert were expecting a boy to help on the farm. The story is all about how Anne manoeuvres through her life with them and school and within the town.

This is a heartwarming story written in 1908 by Lucy Maud Montgomery (credited as L.M. Montgomery.) Translated into more than 36 different languages and sold over 50 million books worldwide. This story is Book 1 of an 8 part series that follows Anne from childhood to motherhood. The first book is by far the most popular. It's been turned into movies, television shows and live theatre productions. It most certainly is a story that is beloved the world over!

*I took my daughter's copy of her childhood book with me to Green Gables. It's very special to me as we read it together when she was quite young. I clutched it lovingly in my hands as I walked around and took many pictures with it. At the end I stamped the book with some special stamps provided by the park. It was a magical moment!

I found this in a little library and took it to free up space for my donations, but also because we watched the first episode of the anime and I only vaguely remembered what had happened in the original and wanted to see how the translation did. The anime is pretty close, to be honest! (Her anime hair is VERY red, though, particularly compared to the more "strawberry blonde" on the cover here.)

I did note that this is an EXTREMELY abridged version, even without having read one word of the unabridged version (in retrospect, all I *really* read was Anne of West Philly), since a very lot of scenes feel truncated for length... most of them, in fact. It's like reading a vaguely stream-of-conscious account of her life where she goes from complaining about her dresses being so plain to immediately nervous about meeting the Barrys to suddenly she and Diana are "bosom buddies" in an instant and Matthew got her chocolates that she loved but only had one so she could share the rest with Diana, which Marilla is secretly pleased about. Room to breathe, please?

(Then again, this way fairly accurately describes how fast Anne talks to Marilla, from Marilla's perspective.)

It's fine for younger readers, I suppose... or me, who just wants the general idea for review purposes after making a thoroughly ridiculous reading goal for myself, haha... oops.

I loved this book! (Yes I will always start my reviews with such statements) I loved how Anne is so open and fresh and naive, in a way. But the way she talks for her age is what I enjoyed the most. I kept this permanent, silly smile on my face every page on the way.
I read the book 3-4 times and will never get tired of it. The author is a genius, much like Jane Austen in a way, and most unlike her in another. (Don't ask)
I recommend this novel to people who can take awkward and embarrassing moments, since the books is full of such situations. I assure you you will love Anne and her home, Green Gables.

My 7 year old son says he gives this 3 stars. 1 star was taken away because Matthew died, and an additional star because "Anne is in love with Gilbert." 🤣
My 5 year old daughter said 3 stars, though she never wanted me to stop reading. Can't trust kids these days!!! Based on how they acted while we read, I've given it 4 stars.

It was a good adaptation. Took out a lot of the life lessons that the original had, but the main storyline was intact. I'm sure when they're older they'll love the original.

Anne of Green Gables is about an orphan girl named Anne and she is adopted by the Cuthberts. The only problem is that they were expecting a boy. The book is about the characters deciding if they still want Anne. As the book continues Anne grows as a person and so do the Cuthberts. I love Annie's character and the way she changes throughout the story. So read this amazing book and follow Anne's story.

After the rich writing of L.M. Montgomery in her loved Anne of Green Gables series, this modified children's version was almost painful reading for me but my four year old was charmed! We no more than closed the book after the final chapter when she sighed, "I'm going to miss those people." The story line, though simplified and shortened, is still delightful.
