Critically acclaimed author of historical fiction, Alix Rickloff’s family tree includes a knight who fought during the Wars of the Roses (his brass rubbing hangs in her dining room) and a soldier who sided with Charles I during the English Civil War (hence the family's hasty emigration to America). With inspiration like that, what else could she do but start writing her own stories? She lives in Maryland in a house that’s seen its own share of history so when she’s not writing, she can usually be found trying to keep it from falling down.

Once the heroine could have fooled herself into believe they had a future but when reality comes crashing down, her heart grows cold and she turns from him and becomes obsessed with her goals. Now, years later, fate and the leaders of both their governments have reunited the pair but whatever trust or connection that once existed between them had dissolved.

The hero is a damaged man and it shows in his scarred body, his bloodshot eyes and his alcoholism. He is a disappointment to his family, his soldiers and, if he's honest himself. Life for him started out so fresh and hopeful but marriage to his now deceased wife and the choices man to be away from her poison has modeled him into a tortured man who lives in constant memory of what he's done and what he's become. He once turned to the heroine to sooth that ache but when she found out he was married, to her it a betrayal. So she cut ties. Now, even if she didn't look at him with disgust and anger, he is not the man she once knew and he never will be again. When he is told their mission is to hunt down a rogue half-fae and a magical sword which he's using to create undying soldiers, the hero is resistant to the idea that magic even exists. He is much of the idea that life is plain and normal and horribly over rated. And it's this attitude and his habit of drink that actually make him a liability to the heroine and their mission at the beginning. But as times goes on, he sobers up and starts opening himself to the reality of magic. Because he's seen the magic and he's seen his uselessness almost mean the end for the heroine and that's something he refuses to allow again.

Despite the pain and the strained relationship between them, he means to keep her safe. The two face their past and for the most part, air out their differences and even find themselves succumbing to the desire between them. But, no matter how hard it is for the heroine to resist him, especially when he's being charming and tender, resist him she must. There can be no future for them. She is destined to take her place among the Fae, no longer the half breed outcast. And he is destined to take his place in society among the rich and the titled, no matter how he hates the idea. Their lives are so different and no amount of sex or wishing for otherwise can change that. But when the final act comes and the stakes are raised as the hero's sister has been kidnapped by the villain, the heroine risks everything to prevent the hero from succumbing to the darkness within. If he returns to that cold and dark place, she fears he will never be free of it. So, she's willing to sacrifice herself for the man she loves - pride or stubbornness be damned.

I think what I liked best about this book was the damaged hero and the heroine who saw him all too well. Life with his treacherous wife urged him to war in an attempt to escape her. There, he encountered the horrors of death and blood and something deep inside him changed into that monster. He was forced to kill and it molded him into something he hated. Even now, years gone past and left in nothing but an empty shell of his former self, the hero is still haunted by his dead wife and the agony of his memories. The heroine has always been a soothing element to his life and when he lost her, it hurt him deeply. He never got the chance to tell her the truth, that she was not his mistress but the light of his life. Now, she too has changed. From that soft and innocent woman he knew into this warrior woman with a jaded heart and stubborn streak. The heroine is still very hurt by his betrayal and she doesn't forgive easy. Their mission requires close contact between them but though desire runs hot, the tension is thick. Despite her cold shoulder towards him, she in fact is one of the few people to actually see the real him. She sees past his handsome face and into the damaged man. She sees his pain and hears his nightmares. And she sees the monster lurking deep down, the monster he fears and she herself is unnerved by. She doesn't hide from him or their past relationship but she harsh towards him now. They spend the entire book battling that push and pull of their emotions and honestly, I don't know if everything was completely solved by the end but perhaps that's honest. The story was action packed but at times a bit slow. No matter, the complex characters and sexual tension fixed that right up and I could almost let myself be swept away. It wasn't perfect, mind, but it was still rather enjoyable. Fae, magical swords and damaged heroes? Sign me up.

I didn't know this was a part of a series until I got on here. So I found that out. Good book. Loved it!

DNF.

I thought this story might be entertaining, the Fey and magic in the Regency. This is book two in the series and I have to admit that never read book one. That might be the problem.

However, the story starts out disjointed, withsome one being made into some type of immortal warrior with a magic sword. I was kind of grossed out by the scene. But I read on.

The next scene is the heroine mooing over the hero, remembering their passionate nights together and then finding out from the crowd that her lover is married. She runs away from him before he can explain. (Okay, so she's a stupid coward, getting mixed up with a married man and then running away instead of confromting him.)

Next scene, six months later, the hero wakes up and vomits because he drank too much. But he has the bowl ready since this has been his normal routine for the last six months. (What a pretty picture! Yeah, not liking the hero much at this point. A drunkard who cheated on his wife, and lied to his lover about his married status. Not much to recommend him.)

A few scenes pass with backstory. The hero and heroine meet and given an assignment, to find the sword that makes men undead or immortal. Not quite certain.

The scene that turned me off came when the heroine, pining for the past, remembering the physical relationship she had with the hero, starts masterbating.

I don't even like her yet so I certainly don't want to spend time with her while she's doing that!

So, I'm done.

I loved this book. It was very well written and action packed. It had something unique, it was a historical paranormal romance, however you say that. The author managed a perfect blend of all three. I felt for the characters, Morgan and Cam. Morgan was a strong female character and Cam was a perfect match for her. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who's looking for something different and exciting in historical romances.

Excellent Reading

Characters interesting...plot solid....especially liked use of magic and reality. Strong female lead...wished male character was not quite so tortured, but carried plot...
