The Enchantress

Rate this book
Bestselling author Allison Hobbs's latest creation features a complex web of ghosts, evil spirits, the crimes of the antebellum South, and the endless depths of revenge.

Eris is a fallen goddess who has been demoted to roam the earth in the guise of a slave. Intending to become the mistress of the plantation, she uses her dark powers to bewitch and sexually enslave her owner, Arthur Stovall. Before she has gained much power, she’s discovered by the plantation mater’s mistress goes awry and Eris is burned alive. Her spirit is banished to the dark realm—the dwelling place for corrupt and depraved souls.

But Eris grows obsessed with an uncontrollable desire for vengeance upon the Stovall family, and she uses trickery to escape this lower dimension. However, two hundred years have passed and settling the score with the plantation master is no longer an option. Undeterred, Eris turns her merciless intentions toward the last descendant of the Stovall line, who happens to be an African American male, making her road to revenge much more complicated.

With an all-encompassing plot, spanning from the 1800s to present-day Philadelphia, and Hobbs's signature themes of erotica and the paranormal, The Enchantress is a quick-paced, thrilling novel.

I've Read Better

After getting in a little trouble, Eris, a goddess is sent to the earth where she is to live her life as a slave. As a "healer" she is allowed to work in the house. Determined to become the mistress of the Stovall plantation, she puts a plan into motion which ultimately sends her to the Dark Realm where everyone is doing weird things. With revenge on her mind, she devises a plan to get back to earth and wreck havoc on the Stovall family. In the Dark Realm she meets Xavier who shows her how to use her third eye to she what's happening on earth. She finds out 300 years have passed and her master is dead. His next of kin is a man named Bryce. She begins using her third eye to invade his dreams and turn his life upside down causing problems with his fiancée, Alaji.

When first reading the novel it started off pretty slow, but I was still very intrigued. Intrigue quickly turned into something else. I became confused, first, with the timing of the book. It was supposed to be during the times of slavery and Eris was roaming the earth in the guise of a slave; however, neither Eris nor Arthur's speech led you to believe they were from that era of time. They spoke as if they were from some royal kingdom. Their language should have reflected the times like the other characters. Second, some of the characters confused me. I didn't understand what exactly Xavier was. Was he an animal? A demon? What?

I read all types of books, but this was a little out there even for it to be paranormal. I think Allison was reaching and went really over the top. It was just weird and the sex scenes were revolting. I don't believe that this is Allison Hobb's best work, and I feel that readers will be disappointed. I will say, however, that the book did keep me wondering what type of weird things Eris would do next. I found most interesting Bryce and Ajali's parts. "The Enchantress," filled with demonic spirits, witchcraft, and horrible sex scenes, is not something this reader would recommend to others. But I do recommend Allison's other novels.
