Marsilio Ficino: Een universeel mens

De bekende humanist en filosoof Marsilio Ficino leefde in het 15e-eeuwse Florence (1433-1499). In opdracht van zijn beschermheer Cosimo de Medici stichtte en leidde hij de beroemde Plato-Academie in Florence. Dit werd een ontmoetingsplaats voor een grote schare mensen van uiteenlopende achtergrond: staatslieden, hoge geestelijken, dichters, wis- en natuurkundigen, astronomen, juristen, musici, priesters, doktoren, rechtsgeleerden en grote kunstenaars als Michelangelo en Botticelli.

Ficino was meer dan vertaler en commentator van oude teksten, zoals voor kort door de wetenschap werd aangenomen. Door klassieke filosofen als Hermes Trismegistos, Plato en neoplatonisten voor zijn tijd toegankelijk te maken, wilde Ficino tijdgenoten ervan overtuigen dat de mens in diepste zin goddelijk en onsterfelijk is.

In 1999, 500 jaar na zijn dood, werd Ficino uitgebreid herdacht. Ondermeer verscheen een Engelstalige bundel met artikelen over hem. In de Nederlandse bewerking hiervan worden filosofische, poëtische, medische, astrologische, magische en hermetische aspecten van Ficino's denken belicht. De auteurs leggen een duidelijke verbinding naar onze tijd. Het gedachtegoed dat hij overdraagt, is niet aan tijd gebonden, maar heeft universele waarde.

Collection of essays on Marsilio Ficino for the 500th anniversary of his death. The essays cover an interestingly broad range of topics, though each essay is quite short and I think I would have enjoyed it more and gotten more out of it if they were longer. Somewhat out of date, reflecting immediate post-Cold War scholarship tendencies, etc, as one should expect, they still have a lot of useful and interesting information. Not recommended as *only* intro source on Ficino, but can be a useful launching pad to learn more about what there is to learn about him.
