About the author

Melanie Reinhart is an astrologer and author based in the United Kingdom. She has taught for several well-known astrological schools in the UK and abroad, including the Faculty of Astrological Studies, the Centre for Psychological Astrology, the London School of Astrology, and Astro*Synthesis. In 2004 she received the Charles Harvey Award for 'exceptional service in astrology', and in 2009 she became one of the Patrons of the Faculty of Astrological Studies. Reinhart is known for her empirical and intuitive research on new astronomical objects such as the Centaurs.

I find this book to be the definitive guide on understanding the mythology behind Chiron and its meaning in the birth chart. For such a little understood and curious planetoid, this book delves into such detail and depth that it probably requires a few reads to truly grasp. It's fascinating how much healing can take place from learning about Chiron in your own personal chart and recognising and acknowledging your Achille's Heel, or fundemental weakness in life. Chiron is detailed through the zodiac signs and houses and what this typically symbolises about your journey as a human being and why you might encounter certain challenges. And furthermore how to go about resolving them.

I found Ch.7 "Chiron in Apect" portion particularly interesting and eye-opening. This book is very thorough in its description of Chiron through the signs, houses, and aspects. Chiron is a beautiful placement within the chart and an area where true wisdom surrounding our suffering can be found.

I really enjoyed much of this book. I am not well versed in the structure of the zodiac and the different ways to read astrological charts, so I struggled undersanding the structure, (the houses, ascendant etc.) I was fascinated and felt I knew this information on a deeper level. Reinhart explains the myth of Chiron and its affects in the astrological chart by refering to various people and even countries throughout history to give example to her theories. I felt a lot of her explanations in my own life which was the main factor in my enjoyment of this book. I am also inspired to go deeper in my own journey. This book was recommended to me many years ago, and in August of 2025 I had my chart read which prompte me to finally read the Healing Journey because of the mention of Chiron so much in my reading.

It wasn't quite what I'd hoped. I'd heard that this was THE book on Chiron. Unfortunately I found it outdated (especially in terms of gender norms) and found it spent more time around symbolism, mythologies, and archetypes rather on describing aspects. Aspect descriptions were very short and focuser mainly on challenging aspects like squares and oppositions. Conjunctions, trines, a d sextiles were neglected. House and sign position were conflated which meant interpretations lacked nuance. Unfortunately I didn't really find any new insights, or insights relevant to my chart which was disappointing. There seems to be a sore need for a more contemporary take on the centaurs/dwarf planets/asteroids.

Wounded Healer, and the grand journey

My study of Chiron is fairly new, Reinhart's book has been a good introduction to the subject for me. There were some sections that weren't for me, such as their interpretation of the swine flu epidemic, but the in-depth look at Chiron in the houses, signs and the aspects was really helpful. I can't say for sure, but I think this might be one of the earlier books to look at Chiron and the aspects. Overall, I highly recommend this for people starting to explore their healing and spiritual-evolutionary journey through the lens of astrology.

I have a few favourite Astrology books that I return to periodically. This is one of them. I find myself struggling to find words to do it justice. Its depth is simply breathtaking. Melanie shows a true understanding of Astrology, Mythology, Psychology and what it is to be human. A beautiful book!

I bought this book when it first was published. I was already familiar with Chiron; at an astrology conference in the early 80s lots of people were talking about the newly discovered asteroid.
Lots of good stuff has been written about Chiron over the years, but for my money, this is the best. As a practicing shamanic healer and teacher, I have found her approach invaluable- all of my most gifted students have had prominent Chirons in their charts. As an astrologer who is usually sought out when people are struggling with their healing, I find that sign and house placement, and transits of Chiron, often figure significantly in their lives at the times of readings- along with most of the outer planets plus Saturn.
One caveat: while this book can transform your understanding of your own wounds, it will only be helpful to the extent that you have looked into your chart pretty thoroughly already, and have a good understanding of astrology's basic concepts. But if you have a thirst for self-understanding, it can inspire you to delve deeper into what astrology has to offer in the way of insight.
It will also help you to understand those close to you- family and friends- and perhaps see how they have lived out their own wounds. This can be very helpful to your relationships, and teach you compassion. We all have wounds.
