View our feature on Vicki Lewis Thompson’s Chick with a Charm. From the New York Times bestselling author of Blonde with a Wand--another charming tale of love and witchcraft
Lily Revere is free-spirited and fun-loving-two dangerous qualities in a witch. Lily needs a date for her sister Anica's engagement party, and she's determined to bring hot Griffin Taylor. But the jaded divorce lawyer claims his job has warned him off romance. Slipping a love elixir into Griffin's drink may not be the noble thing to do-but it sure works! There's just one problem: Are Griffin's feelings the result of some truly good witchcraft-or could he really be in love?
New York Times and USA Today bestseller Vicki Lewis Thompson believes love makes the world go around and laughter makes the trip worth taking. The recipient of RWA’s Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award and the author of more than ninety books, Vicki pioneered a new kind of romance hero with Nerd in Shining Armor. Following the success of her nerd stories, Vicki launched a boisterous paranormal series featuring a matchmaking witch and wizard, an ADD dragon named George, and a black cat inspired by her own precocious feline, Eve.
How could the first book in the series be so good, and the second so bad?
This was one of the most repetitive books I've ever read. Want to know about the plot? Here goes:
*insert magical potion here*
Griffin: Lily's amazing. I want to have hot sex with her. Lily: Maybe I shouldn't have done this. I'll worry about it after the engagement party. *they have sex* (hotness is debatable, see below) Griffin: Why am I acting so crazy? Oh who cares - Lily is amazing! I want to have hot sex with her. Lily: Maybe I shouldn't have done this. I'll worry about it after the engagement party. *they have sex*
The worst part is that I am NOT exaggerating. 300+ pages of going back and forth like that. And the sex scenes, rather than being hot, got annoying. When it's happening every other chapter, it gets tedious. Especially when there are quotes like the one below...
"His penis reacted like a Scud missle, homing in on her moist heat." This is an actual quote from one of the sex scenes in the book. I laughed so hard I had to read it out loud to my husband who proceeded to roll his eyes and ask why I bother to read romances. Why, for the humor, of course.
This is the second book to Vicki Lewis Thompson's Babe's on Broom's. It's about Anica's sister Lily, who has been crushing on this lawyer Griffin. Finally after three months of them ogling one another Lily asks Griffin to go on a coffee date, but he turns her down. His reason is he doesn't think Lily has any plans in her future. He doesn't want to get in a relationship based on lust and get a divorce a few years down the road. He's looking for the real deal and even though he really likes Lily he doesn't want to go there with her. Lily on the other hand can sense Griffin likes her, so she doesn't understand why he turns her down. Now Anica and Jasper are having an engagement party and Anica's and Lily's parents are coming into town. Lily has always looked up to Anica and in her own way is jealous of her sister. She wants to show her parents she can also have a boyfriend, one that is not like she has dated in her past. Now Griffin the lawyer would be perfect to show off. So Lily decides to give him a potion that involves her dog Daisy that basically makes the guy head over heals for her! For her it seems she is killing two birds with one stone here. She gets the guy she adores and makes her parents proud of her. However the more time Lily and Griffin start to spend together Griffin becomes more obsessed with her and now she doesn't know what is real. Does Griffin really like her? Will he forgive her for what she has done and can they move past this? Does he figure it out on his own? So many questions!
I do have to say the only thing that bothered me about the book was how Griffin was at times, he was just soo needy and it bugged me! I know what is how the potion works but at times it just got on my nerves and I don't know how Lily liked that? What I did love is when Griffin and Lily were together and the fun they had....Not to mention some steamy scenes! Plus the ending was really nice. If I could have I would have given this a 3.5 just because I did get annoyed with the whole I need to be with you 24/7. Other than that loved the book!
I got really bored with this book after about 100 pages. I really really wanted to like this book after reading the first book where Anica accidentally turns her lover into a cat. In book 2 we meet Anica's sister Lily, who has a major crush on one of her bar patrons, Griffin. Griffin has made the ultimate decision that Lily is completely wrong for him, so he makes no effort to ask Lily out. Shes to "wild" for him. With Anica's wedding fast approaching, Lily decides to slip Griffin an infactuation charm so she can snag him as a date for the wedding.
The result of the charm is that Griffin suddenly decides he must have sex with Lily immediately. Insert pages and pages and pages of Griffin lusting for Lily, and the 2 of them go after it like raging bunnies. Insert more sex. And more sex and more sex! (lets completely leave out a plot while we are at it) After all that sex and lusting for sex, I gave up. I skimmed the last few pages for a resolution.
Very dissapointing book. I had high hopes for this book, and it just didnt deliver. There wasnt enough paranormal aspects, just sex , sex and more sex. Blah blah blah.
I found this to be a good easy read. I liked the potion (elixir) ideal not real original ideal to write about, but it worked for this book and couple. If you read the first book in this series you found Lily was having a hard time getting Griffin to notice her, so she ends up putting a potion in this drink to see if she can win him. I really liked the emotions in this book it was a roller costar ride, especially when she gives her dog to Griffin. I also liked how Griffin found out Lily was a witch.
With Lily giving the potion to Griffin in the first part of the book it made for quite a bit of sex, because that’s all Griffin could really think about. It was good sex but quite a bit of it. I didn’t understand why there was a cat on front of the book Lily has a dog, I know that not real important, I guess I may be picky. There is some interesting people left, hope I will see more of them in coming books.
This was a cute fun sexy book to read. Its hard to find a good interesting book about witches, usually the magic doesn't come across well on the written page then most books these days are about vamps. So I was please at well this was written and how much I enjoyed it. The scenes really flow well together. It didn't seem as if they were just trying to make it to the next sex scene it was truly a good plot and story. The only disappointment was with the ending. I felt it all came together to quickly. But over all it an enjoyable read.
I got this book because the first one Blonde with a Wand was one of the first I bought on my Kindle and I loved it!! I am a big fan of Vicki to begin with so I had high hopes for this novel. I shouldn't have built it up in my head so much because I was disappointed. First off, there was no real sense of the characters falling in love so much as falling into bed thanks to the adoration elixir that Lily made. Second it's really hard to not want to shake Lily because she used magic for her own selfish reasons to get Griffin to like her. At least with the other book it was a simple mistake that cast the spell but Lily did this intentionally. Plus the ending felt really thrown together and kinda felt like you ran into a brick wall. Cute enough but not as good as the first and defintely not one of Vicki's better novels. Read it if nothing else to see how the other sister is if you've read the first one but don't set your hopes too high.
This book was so much fun! I loved the POV of the male lead when he was not understanding his own actions or being able to control his urges. Lots of LOL fun and plenty of hot hot sex! Great read if you like supernatural/witch romance stories.
This book was such a letdown that I was tempted quite a few times to give it up midway. It was only through sheer will that I managed to finish this book. I had high hopes from this one after enjoying Anica's story in the first book so much. But Lily's story didn't have enough magic to keep me glued to the pages. Come to think of it, this book didn't even have enough romance to satiate the romantic in me. It was a steamy read and while trying not to sound like a prude, I'll fess up that all the schmexy times felt like too much of an overkill.
And don't even get me started on the ending. It seemed so forced and rushed. Unlike Anica and Jasper's journey in the first book, Lily and Griffin's characters had not scope to grow and I didn't buy their HEA.
Trust me, you wouldn't be missing much if you skipped this book. I'm sure there are many better books waiting on your TBR pile.
This book wasn't as good as the first in my opinion. I kept on reading because I wanted to see what was going to happen, but at the end when Griffin KNOWS that Lily put a spell on him and Lily KNOWS that he KNOWS, but they just don't talk about it, but they give each other knowing looks. Idk it turned me off of the book and I just wanted to skip to the ending.
This is my first Vicki Lewis Thompson book. Oh, don’t gasp too hard! I have a good portion of her books in the old TBR mountain, and as with all of those books in that mountain, time is what keeps me away from the majority of them. But I’m glad I read this one, because now I’m going to be reading more of this author’s books. I had the terrific opportunity to hear Ms. Lewis Thompson’s speech when she won the Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award from RWA in 2008, and her humor stood out in leaps and bounds. I figured her books would read the same way, and for once I was right in my assumption. I had the best time with Chick with a Charm.
Lily has had her eye on Griffin for a while now, but he’s shown no interest in her. Her sister’s getting married and Lily needs an escort to the engagement part, so she’s decided to take matters into her own hands. Because, really, how much damage can an all but harmless love elixir do? Maybe it’s not the best way to go about getting a man to take notice of you, but it’s only for a short time. So Lily goes for it. She gets what she wants. But she also gets what she doesn’t want when all is said and done.
Watching couples go through divorce on a daily basis has caused attorney Griffin Taylor to turn a blind eye to love and romance. He’ll rely on his gut any day of the week over letting some woman get her hooks into him the old-fashioned way. He’s been having the time of his life with Lily after their sudden hook-up, but something doesn’t feel totally right. However, none of that matters when lust takes over.
These two are a fun couple, even though Griffin is literally under Lily’s spell. There’s an attraction there to begin with and he’s too stubborn to realize it, let alone do something about it. Lily has her moments of guilt, knowing she should dispel her enchantment, but she’s wanted this man for so long, her better judgment goes by the wayside, which does get her trouble in the end.
When Griffin finds out what Lily’s done, he is, of course, disillusioned. But he’s also in love and he’s not sure what to do about the whole situation. I like the turnabout that it’s the hero who takes time away to figure things out, making the heroine sweat while he’s gone.
I had fun along the way with them. So much so, I’ve begun my search for the first book in the series. I’m ready for a lot more fun.
Chick with a Charm was another fun romance from one of my favorite authors, but it didn't have quite the same effect on me as the first book. Lily has been crushing on Griffin for awhile, and has decided to brew up an adoration elixir to get him to reciprocate. It's a terrible idea, but Lily is impulsive and really likes him, and is convinced that he just needs an extra boost to get him to act on his feelings for her. Griffin is a divorce lawyer and has no interest in simple flings. He is attracted to Lily, but he doesn't think she's marriage material. Then after she makes him a special cocktail, he can't seem to stay away from her. His life is turned upside and everything points to Lily.
I think it's fairly obvious that Lily's potion is going to have unintended results. Griffin does become completely enamored with her, but he also gets super clingy. He wants to stay over every night, and even skips work without a second thought! Much of Chick with a Charm is Griffin acting completely irrationally while Lily is conflicted over what she's done. On one hand, she loves having him around, but on the other, she can't trust that those feelings have any real meaning. Of course, Griffin figures out that something isn't quite right after some reality checks from his friends, and he has to reverse the spell himself.
I do wish Chick with a Charm had taken more advantage of the fact that Lily uses her dog's essence as part of the potion. Daisy is completely loyal and adores Lily, qualities she wanted Griffin to have. I think it would have been hilarious if Griffin had displayed more canine behavior in addition to just the adoration. The results of the elixir came across as more of a lust charm than anything else, so I do think a little over-the-top doggie behavior would have been more enjoyable.
In the end, I did enjoy Chick with a Charm. It was quick and cute, but was missing a little something for me. I loved meeting Lily and Anica's parents though; those two are something else!
Chick with a Charm by Vicki Lewis Thompson is a fun little paranormal romance novel full of magic and gratuitous sex. Even though it is the second in the Babes on Brooms series, it is not necessary to have read part 1, Blonde with a Wand. There are a few references to the earlier novel, but the main point is explained, and this book centers around a different main character.
This is the story of Lily, a wild, fun-loving bartender who also happens to be a witch. During the course of her work, she becomes interested in a handsome lawyer named Griffin. Lily senses that Griffin is attracted to her as well, but he is too straight-laced to ask her out. As her sister's engagement party looms closer and closer, she decides to take matters into her own hands by slipping Griffin a love potion. At first, her plan seems to have worked as Griffin shows up at the bar later that night barely in control of himself. Soon after they make it back to her apartment, he seduces her into a night of extremely steamy sex, and thereby seals the spell. Unfortunately for Lily, her plan soon begins to unravel as it becomes obvious that Griffin is obsessed with her.
The bulk of the novel centers around sex, sex, and more sex as Lily grapples with the problem of releasing Griffin from the spell . She wants to keep it in place until after the party, but realizes that Griffin's obsession is beginning to affect his job and smother her. She also discovers that she is falling for him, and knows that once the spell is gone, there is a good possibility that he will be so furious he will walk out of her life forever. Then there is the problem of her dog, Daisy, who, in addition to being either magical or the smartest dog on earth, has fallen in love with Griffin herself, and Lily can't bear the thought of breaking Daisy's heart in addition to her own.
If you enjoy romance novels, this is a nice, quick read that would be a great choice for both beach days and snow days. It has the expected romance novel formula and ending, but the magical element keeps it from being too run-of-the-mill.
The idea of dosing someone with a love potion raises awkward questions, given the modern situations involving date-rape drugs and their helpless victims. Is the wrong mitigated when you use it on someone you know is attracted to you but refuses to act on it? Is it somehow funny when the victim is a man rather than a woman?
These questions kept nagging at me and wouldn’t go away in spite of the insouciant vivacity of the main female character, Lily Revere, Anica’s flighty younger sister. I wondered why she simply didn’t go up to Griffin Taylor and proposition him and then ask why he wouldn’t date her in spite of his obvious interest. Griffin might have come clean about his reluctance to be with a woman who was clearly his polar opposite in nature and Lily might have tried harder to win him or simply cut her losses and tried for someone else.
The motivations behind Lily’s magical manipulation are varied and sexual attraction is actually the least of them. Insecurity about not having a boyfriend, much less a husband, and the wish not to show up alone at her sister’s engagement party and wedding are significant factors in her decision and make her seem a touch horrid. It certain makes it difficult to justify her decision in spite of the torrid sex that occurs whenever she and Griffin get together.
Thankfully, her conscience kicks in, right about the time that Griffin’s buddies get suspicious about his altered behavior and stage an intervention. It redeems the book’s initial premise but only just.
Once again, Dorcas and Ambrose make an appearance, although their actions are mostly passive in this case. It would seem that Ms. Thompson may be phasing out this lovely magical couple and allowing her characters to stand more or less on their own two feet.
The message that opposites do attract and may provide benefits for each other is an old one but it provides the necessary tonic for this book. All’s well that ends well...maybe.
Bartender Lily Revere is every bit as untamed a witch as her sister, Anica, is by-the-book. Normally this isn’t a problem, but with Anica’s engagement party fast approaching and Lily’s parents coming into town for the party, the wilder Revere sister has a plan to impress their parents.
Unfortunately for human Griffin Taylor, the man Lily has been lusting after, that plan includes him. Griffin is a divorce lawyer whose childhood and chosen vocation have warned him to go with his head, not his…gut...when it comes to love. Then when Lily slips an adoration elixir into his drink, all of Griffin’s inhibitions are stripped away when it comes to Lily. The two seem perfect together, but are Griffin’s feelings for Lily real, or just the result of some potent magic?
Love potions never go well for the creator or the object of their affections. Yet while things get a little crazy for Lily and Griffin, it’s pure fun for readers who are along for the ride. Lily is a lovable, free-spirited, and yes, charming heroine. Her bright spirit is infectious, endearing her to the reader even when she does some less-than-noble things (i.e.: pouring an adoration elixir into Griffin’s drink). Griffin, despite his reservations, is actually as perfect for Lily as she for him. He was an utterly delicious hero and things definitely got hot when he and Lily were together.
Chick with a Charm is the second delightful installment in Vicki Lewis Thompson’s Babes on Brooms series and it’s the perfect follow-up to Blonde with a Wand. Readers new to this series need not fear they’ll be missing anything if they read Chick with a Charm first. Each book fully stands on its own. I absolutely love this series and hope Ms. Thompson has another Babes on Brooms novel coming soon!
Lily Revere has been lusting after the hot lawyer Griffin Taylor but although he sends out the right signals, he isn't interested in a relationship. Lily decides to take his freewill away from him and slip a potent love potion into his drink. It works a little too well as Griffin can't bear to be away from her. Unfortunately Lily doesn't know if his feelings are sincere or if they are the manifestations of the love potion.
Lily is fairly self absorbed and incredibly irresponsible. She knows that the love potion will have a significant effect on Griffin as she is a powerful witch but decides to go ahead anyway and spike his drink. Her sister's dire warnings don't even deter her. The more sex she has with Griffin, the more fixated he is on her - clearly not a healthy relationship. I would have had a little more respect for her if she had coughed up the details of what she had done but she doesn't have the guts for that.
Griffin acts like a man possessed...because he is. I have no way of knowing what Lily saw in him because he becomes slavish in his affections very quickly. He probably was a nice guy because he had some friends that seemed to care about him but beyond that, I haven't a clue.
The relationship basically consists of Griffin obsessing over Lily, fantasising about her, Lily wondering if she should do the right thing and confess her sins and then the two having sex. The plot is stuck on a rinse and repeat cycle so I actually got a bit bored. The love potion takes the excitement out of the relationship as there is never any doubt as to whether they will get together.
I prefer relationships to be a little more balanced with both individuals able to exercise their right to free will. It wasn't really my cup of tea. On the plus side, there is a cute dog.
Lily is a witch who is trying to find her place. Her sister is getting married soon and the engagement party is this weekend and her parents are coming into town. She doesn't want to feel like a total failure especially since the guy she is crushing on, won't go out with her. She decides to slip an adoration elixir into his drink and boy, does it work....maybe too well.
Lily and Griffin have some really hot scenes but it's a bit creepy with Griffin. He's basically obsessed and just this side of being a stalker ~ especially going into her house without her permission. At least the first half of their relationship is nothing but lust but thankfully Lily realizes what she did was wrong. Things do get better for them towards the end.
Daisy is just adorable but she has an obsession with Griffin!! Thank goodness she's a dog! I really enjoyed the whole dog aspect and it even got me teary-eyed at one part.
It was nice getting updates of Anica and Jasper and getting to know more of Lily and Anica's parents as well as other witches/wizards. I liked how the growing relationship continued between Lily and Anica.
The ending was much better than the first book. It was a GREAT ending!
In Blonde with a Wand, Anica got herself into a heap of trouble when she turned her date into a cat. After a lot of turmoil and heartache her story ended with a happily ever after but will her sister, Lily, have the same outcome in Chick with a Charm?
It was obvious that Griffin Taylor would never ask her out on his own so Lily decided to give him a magical nudge in the right direction. The nudge worked like a charm (pun intended) and everything was going as plan until she started having real feelings for Griffin. How can she tell whether his feelings are a real or just magic in the works? Can she lift the spell? And would she even want to?
Chick with a Charm has a lot of similarities when compared to Blonde with a Wand. I enjoyed both and would recommend them if you’re looking for a nice light read. I should also mention that there's a lot of sex in this book. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing ;-) BUT if you're not into books with sex (or you're underage) then this may not be the book for you.
We met Lily in the previous book and we see how impulsive and live in the moment she is. This time around Lily is no difference, when the book opens she is determined to do something about the man she has a crush on. So with the help of her trusty dog, Daisy, she brews up a potion that will make Griffin attracted to her and make the attraction stronger every time they have sex. The potion does exactly what it supposed to. As Lily enjoys her time with Griffin slowly the guilt creeps in and Griffin knows something isn't right, as it seems like he has no control left in his life. Here are the problems for these two. As time goes on Lily becomes more and more guilty and Griffin, with the help of his friends starts to become aware that all isn't what it should be with Lily. Once again the wizard and witch couple are back and give Griffin answers that he needs, but if he breaks the spell what will happen between the two of them, both he and Lily aren't sure they want to find out.
This is the second A Babes on Brooms book. Lily found a man that she is interested in. Griffin Taylor comes into the bar where she works every night after work. She knows he is attracted to her but he has not made a move yet. So she decides to put an adoration elixir in his drink. She does but afterward she kind of regrets doing it, but the sex is fantastic. Griff is totally taken with her and she knows it's the elixir. She starts to feel guilty. But her parents are coming for her sister's engagement party and wedding. She does not want to be alone for those occasions. Will her guilt get to her and make her undo the elixir? I liked this story. Lily was wrong to use the elixir on Griffin. He probably would not have acted on his feelings without it though. I loved the dog Daisy! She was fantastic. So much personality.
It was hard to get attached to this book for its first half because, while the writing style was both quirky and fun, there was too much pointless sex. I didn't know the characters long enough to invest excitement in their bedroom play...and too much sex without enough story and action becomes dull fast. The book finally started taking off with actual story though, and it had saving graces of being genuinely amusing, cute without sappy, a unique formula plot-wise, and a genuinely "magical" happy ending. When it was over and done with I felt great for having read it, even if during the first part it was too easy to put it down and forget about it. The writing style is great, talented author, so I will keep trying more of her stuff.
I am torn between 2 or 3 stars for this book. I settled for 2.5 stars because the book's premise is interesting.
Lily is a witch, simple. She brewed adoration potion and mixed it in the drink for Griffin, the hero. I thought it was funny, in the first few chapters. But it just went downhill afterward.
There are lots and lots of unnecessary adoration scenes that make this book unbearable. It just makes me cringed when I imagined the level of adoration Griffin had been bestowing (non stop) to Lily.
The book only pick up its paced towards the end of it, when Griffin discovered that he has been witched. And when other witches, including Lily's parents try to meddle in their love affair.
I definitely will not be picking this up again. This deserve a one time read only.
This was not NEARLY as good as the first one. It was still fluffy and cute, but 95% of this book was sex scenes. What's wrong with that, you may ask? Trust me, after awhile it was so repetitive I started skipping them to get back to the "plot". The first book had its fair share of sexy time, too, but at least it had a plot. This book literally had nothing going on besides Griffin lusting for Lily and then them having sex. The ending was completely ridiculous, by the way.
I know I sound like I hated this book but I really didn't. It was still a cute and fun read, I was just expecting more of a plot after the first one.
I will definitely be picking up more books from this author when I need a light and fun read.
Did not have the 'charm' of the first book in series. (Sorry!) Deliberate misuse of powers felt icky from the start. Most of the book is very angsty with Heroine feeling very, very guilty over unethical spell vs great sex and the Hero angsting over great sex vs. 'what the hell and I doing - this is just not me' confusion. Did not feel the heart energy. Resolution of her walking away and him instantaneously realizing he was in love with her and 'marry me' just did not ring true for me - perhaps needed a bit more time to develop his clarity with some distance. Disappointed. Will look in next series for Julie's story.

Cute, quick read with lots and lots of sex and a predictable story. Although the storyline began as a believable plot and Daisy the dog was adorable, the characters repeated themselves a lot, the story deteriorated into Lily and Griffin having a lot of sex, not much was explained, Griffin has to figure things out, more sex, and I was a bit put off with the ending, which was wrapped up too neatly and quickly. Did I mention all the sex?? I was expecting more plot and good explanations for the magic stuff (why was Daisy magical?) like the Babes On Brooms Bk 1, which I thought was a much more interesting book, but was sadly disappointed.
I was really excited about this book, until I started reading it. I needed a 'magic wand' for Emily's reading challenge and wanted to read something good. I carefully researched books online, in Novelist, and in the library catalog. I should have checked www.likesbooks.com that review is right in line with what I thought. Basically I read the first chapter and the last chapter of this book and then had absolutely no interest in going any further. I've liked other books by this author, she's got great, sassy, smart writing, I just couldn't connect with this one.
I really enjoyed this book. This is the first book I've read of Vicki Lewis Thompson and I will be reading more of her books. This book is about a twenty-something bar-tending witch who creates an elixir to cause her love "interest" to pay attention to her. Needless to say, the plan backfires. This book is full of humor, romance, drama and nicely written sex scenes. This books is written for adults and contains adult content. I love it. I recommend this book to anyone who likes paranormal romances with light-hearted content.
