About the author

Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

LOVE the ending of Arabasta arc. It was perfect and not just the picture, but you must follow the story to understand and emotionally moved by the X-mark farewell scene. One of the cleverly executed story.



Until Arabasta arc, I found the endings/epilogue of OP arc stories were good at moving my emotions. It seems the author prepared the epilogues with climax moment too.

Right now, writing these lines, means that i already know about Vivi's return in the manga. I don't know what it is but reading this again, i felt warmth. Happines. It's Vivi, again. And Bon Clay and Arabasta. It's about the final scene here, one of the most beautiful, intelligent and hearth warming scenes in the whole series. It's about Bon-chan and his greatness, it's about Luffy's determination. For Robin. Because i laughed and i cried in this volume.

2025 reread : this volume is an absoulute banger. From start to finish there are only good stuffs in there. I'm willing to fight people about this.
The end of Luffy's fight against Crocodile is pretty great, I don't love how long their fight is but I understance why it couldn't be any shorter. Everything with the bomb is awfully tense and the moment Vivi discovers it's a timebomb is a gut punch every time. I do appreciate the fact that it is people from Alabasta that ultimately stop the fighting between the soldiers and rebels. The crew's recovery afterward is fun and doesn't overstay its welcome.
And then there is the last chapter. Vivi's speech. The silent goodbyes of the strawhats. I cried, like I do every time. I love this sereis so much.





When I talk about OP and get asked about my favorite parts the final scene of this book generally comes up. I love it. I cry every time I read it. I just can't help it. I love it that much.

confesso que nada me empolgou TANTO quanto Alabasta até agora. minhas amigas sabem o qnt eu tô apaixonado por esse mundo e por esses personagens, mas completamente d saco cheio d eles serem só um Bando de Idiotas andando à esmo por aí. nesse arco, pela primeira vez, a gente vê os protagonistas agindo com propósito, traçando planos e táticas. os mapas, o desenvolvimento dessas personagens, os cenários, o discurso da Vivi (!!!!!!!!)

Fine dell’Arco di Alabasta. Ritmo altalenante, con tutta la porzione dedicata ai due giganti noiosetta ma che si riprende poco alla volta a partire dall’introduzione di Chopper. Più o meno le dinamiche su cui gira la trama sono sempre le stesse – il motore è sempre la generosità amicale di Luffy totalmente gratuita che fa di tutto per andare in soccorso di un qualche altro personaggio.
Per ora funziona ancora grazie al modo in cui vengono gestiti i personaggi principali, così che tutti abbiano almeno un momento di approfondimento ogni tanto, e per come molti Oda riesce a buttare lì dettagli riprendendoli sempre poi successivamente. Eppure, pur percependo una grossa costruzione sul lungo periodo, mi chiedo per quanto ancora possa funzionare senza scadere nel banale e nel ripetitivo (per esempio è palese che Luffy, Zoro e Sanji avranno sempre un ruolo più centrale a scapito degli sfigatini della ciurma – cosa che non approvo).
Per ora, comunque, è godibile e cerco di godermelo il più possibile.

I've been thinking of Luffy fighting Crocodile and I think I figured out a new reason why I like it so much, even compared to later fights.

We haven't had any training arcs between the start of the story and now, you see. We haven't had Luffy unlock new potential or learn new techniques or spend time learning from the masters. All we see is him getting more clever on his own, coming up with new tricks to counter the strengths of his enemies, not to mention his endless wellspring of determination. His growth has been very subtle like that. You'd almost believe that he could have faced Crocodile right in the second chapter, after leaving home, and still prevailed.

Compare that to his recent fight with Kaido, where he unlocks his true power no less than three times. Two of them right in the middle of the fight. So much more typical shonen there.

The final volume to the story arc offers a truly action-packed and epic finale that pushes Luffy to his limits in his battle with Crocodile while the others attempt to save the capital city by defusing the bomb hidden in the clock tower. The volume then follows up with an epilogue that looks at the city's future and where the team will be headed next while Vivi decides what she will be doing next with her life going further.

Alsbasta was a major Arc,rightfuly so,for now we know its gonna play a major role in the end game scenario!

It is so much fun to revisit all these early islands on paper. For me Alabasta was always special, because it’s the first story that stretches over numerous islands and has one of the best villains, that is able to challenge Luffy for real.
I loved all the fights in this arc. Especially Usopps/Choppers and Zoros. Usopp had such an epic moment when he was seemingly defeated but kept fighting for his friends dreams, despite his endless fear. Can’t help the people that don’t like Usopp. Sanjis fight was not that good in my opinion. I liked how Nami had to figure out her new weapon first, as this was her first real fight.
Of course Luffys fight with Crocodile was the best and I loved to see that Luffy is not the invincible fighter and that he has to be smarter to win against a strong opponent like Crocodile.
The story of Alabasta itself was really well done and very dramatic in the end. I loved the symbolism with the rain and that Vivi got to shine too in the end.
Also Ace appears for the first time and is cause for a lot of mystery, so I am excited to see him again.
The best part about this arc is honestly the ending. It was always one of my favorite moments and it did not fail to deliver again. I love Vivi and Karoo so it was very emotional. This scene really captures the genius of Oda to create little details from the beginning of the story, that later build up to great emotional scenes.
I noticed that the pacing is way better than in the anime although this was till a very long arc.

Anyways I was a One Piece skeptic for a long time and for a great many chapters I still did not see the vision. But Oda is a very patient man and I see now how delicately and lovingly he laid out the scope and characters of this work. In a normal sense of narrative, the actual story here - the adventure on the Grand Line - does not begin for an absurdly long time (at least 100 chapters)! But having been given that space one truly feels like this is a /crew/ of characters, each with their own distinct interpersonal relationship to one another and between them all a bond that binds. “This is a sign of our fellowship!”

Particularly impressive is the first culmination of all this work the Arabasta Arc. There are so many spinning plates here but each piece escalates in compliment to the other, the story even-handedly moving between each of its characters with purpose and intent. As a conveyor of visual information Oda is so precise - my favorite thing he’ll do is a the panels of each characters face reacting to an event. Each one so perfectly characterized. Much like his idol Toriyama, Oda is a deeply silly and funny man. But as was true for Toriyama is true for Oda here, that does not mean you should discount the herculean feat of his creation.

I’m thoroughly impressed and excited to keep reading! I’m on chapter 200-something now and it truly feels like things are just beginning!

There’s also a little Reindeer named Tony Tony Chopper who is a doctor and I love him.

This is my review for the whole Alabasta Arc (Volume 17 - 23).
Still love Luffy as a positive light-hearted protagonist. I liked how they tied the Baroque Worls agents from previous arcs into a larger Baroque works arc that spans even more volumes.
It made the arc feel like it was telling a bigger story, from the time they met Viv.
That had a real impact on the final decision she made to lead her people, but still keeping her ties to the Straw Hats. You could feel her anticipation as she waited for their response. I loved the stakes that responding without words added to the final scene.
Some of the Baroque agents were a little flat as characters, but I hope we see Viv again.

Este volumen igual es de mis favoritos 🥺💜 bueno aquí ya se cierra la batalla y se acaba la rebelión con la lluvia y al fin Vivi puede ser escuchada. Se enteran todos del plan del cocodrilo xd y ya para adelante no más.

Lo de Pell pucha la verdad igual hubiera quedado bien hasta ahí no más, viene en el sgte volumen pero se me va a olvidar mencionarlo después xd con su sacrificio y todo pero a mí me gusta así y que si a Oda no le gusta matar, por mi genial. Mató a uno y todavía no lo supero xd
