Especially when the guy in question is as cute as Jasper Danes. But when Anica and Jasper have a spat, she breaks an ever bigger rule of witchcraft and turns him into a cat. Bad news for him. Worse for her...

Following the success of her nerd stories, Vicki launched a boisterous paranormal series featuring a matchmaking witch and wizard, an ADD dragon named George, and a black cat inspired by her own precocious feline, Eve.
This book is brilliant! I had a very hard time putting it down when I had things in the real world to do. This book is loaded with humor that kept me laughing thoughtout the book.
Few *spoilers* below
Ancia puts a spell on Jasper and turns him in to a cat, they both have an adventure together trying to change him back into a man. In the mean time he changes back in forth between man to cat, he has to learn how to cope with life as a cat this is where the fun part comes in. Imagine if you were a cat what could you possibility get in to. Here is a few; Ancia already has a cat, so you know how two tom cats gets along, plus her neighbor loves to neuter cats. The last one I’m giving out is in order for Jasper to get things done he has to use a computer, so imagine waking up to a cat typing away on a computer trying to solve his problem. What little I just told is the tip of the iceberg of what fun is in this book, if you like humor in your PNR this one is a great read.
This is a fun ride, Thompson does a great job telling the story of Jasper being a cat and falling in love for the woman who put him there.
The next book Chick with a Charm will be release out in March 2010, so there no big wait.
Blonde with a Wand has helped me rediscover my love of light and funny paranormal romance. It’s what first pulled me to the genre. It is reminiscent of Playing with Fire by Gena Showalter. That is a very good comparison considering Playing with Fire is my fav para romance one of them at least.
Blonde with a Wand was very easy to read and pulls you in rather quickly. Once you start reading it’s not even an option to NOT read it. The Characters are likeable. Jasper and Anica seem like a perfect fit from the start. Their chemistry is amazing.
The story progressed nicely and it was good to read a light storyline. By that I mean their romance didn't seem life or death it was self contained and only involved them. Which was a good change from the dark and heavy plots I usually get involved with.
I also thoroughly enjoyed the resolution and how the situation was resolved. It was fairly predictable but only because it was realistic and fit what we all know from childhood movie favorites. Sacrifice for true love conquers all.
I love the side characters, Orion the cat and Lily. I loved the villain, as annoying as she was, a bitter neuter happy old bat. I just simply loved everything about this book.
Kudos to a job well done. Some books feel like a chore to finish, this one did not. I am glad I was able to rediscover chick-lit like paranormal romance again.
Look for Chick with a Charm in March which is Lily's story.
Nothing like having a guy make you so mad that you invoke an ancient curse to turn him into a cat and on top of that, it makes you lose your magical abilities. Anica is a witch and Jasper is the cat...ummm man that she has been dating. They were really good together and it was interesting to see them and their relationship evolve.
There are a few other interesting characters in the story but I really enjoyed the relationship that Anica has with her sister, Lily. It was great to see their relationship improve and how they were there for each other.
This is a really cute, light story with plenty of hot, smexy scenes. It starts out a bit slow but does pick up. I was upset with the ending. It wrapped up too quickly and then proceeded to set up for the next book in the series! The good part? It makes you want to read the next one.
After reading Mary Janice Davidson's "Undead & Unwed," I thought Vicki's witch collection would be an exciting change of pace from my frequent vampire obsessions. I want to start off by thanking Vicki for "Blonde With A Wand" book 1, "Chick With A Charm" book 2, and an autographed postcard featuring the cover art for both novels.
Typically if I am reading a book I am so set in my ways that if after the first chapter doesn't hold my attention I discard the novel and don't look back. It took me until chapter 10 to get into the story, I personally thought those first 10 chapters were a bit of a slow read. However, now that I have finished it I want to say this book does feature all of the great features of an interesting novel: the slow sections, the comedic relief, (not quite tear jerking, but) sad moments, sex, and of course the climactic ending, pun fully intended!
A cool fact about this book is it's publication date, February 2, 2010, is the same as my birthday. Not only were there witches and wizards, but also faeries. Poor Jasper had the misperception it was of the gay variety! Which of course being gay was quite a great laugh as I was reading that part. I'm still laughing by the way! :) Another thing that I liked about this was the fact Vicki wove in animal rescue stories and donations. Sure in the novel they were fiction, but she includes a shout out to the wonderful people at Best Friends Animal Society, which is the world's largest no-kill animal shelter in the world. She actually spent a week there, which goes to show she is more than just a talented author!
There were quite a few sex scenes in this, which of course I had anticipated. Although I had only wished maybe there was a bit more of foreplay or just extend the sex scene for a page or more. It was quite brief while it happened. I loved Jasper's character. The man was clearly aloof in his own playboy reality. During his transformation into the feline world he grew in his humanity. Ironic huh?! But it was a beautiful transformation none-the-less. He learned to appreciate life for more than sex, what great thing is next, and money. Anica, however, I was quite conflicted with. She was quite a boring character for me and I didn't really feel anything for her until chapter 26 of 27. Her sister Lily is a rebel and a lot more adventurous. Maybe that's why I was more drawn to Lily, even tho she was a side character. In "Chick With A Charm" book two, Lily is a more featured character. I look forward to reading this story soon. I was hesistant at first, but now with "Blonde With A Wand" finished, I hope the series continues as well. xoxo
Really more of a 2.5 rounded up. The first part was fun to read and the final solution to the main characters' problem was very good, but I think drastic condensation of the rest would have been a big improvement. This is one of those novels that might have made a very good short story.
The blonde with the wand is Anica Revere, a young witch who uses her magic to do all her housekeeping and to keep her coffee shop in perfect condition. She follows the rule of not getting involved with a guy without first revealing that she's magical (if he thinks she's kidding, she'll pull out her wand and show him)--until Jasper Danes, an attractive young commodities broker, asks her on a date and she breaks that rule. Then she finds out that Jasper has told her a big lie to get her on the date (and into bed, basically). She storms out, he follows and gets overbearing, and she stupidly breaks a much bigger rule of witchcraft: she turns him into a cat. That act of harming a human makes her lose all her magical powers instantly.
So she scoops him up, takes him home, and spends the rest of the book trying to make things right again, calling in her sister (also a witch, powers intact) for help with all sorts of things and eventually bringing in her witch & wizard elders, Dorcas and Ambrose from Thompson's earlier books. Jasper's adventures as a cat are really funny and become heart-warming too as he establishes a good relationship with Anica's pet cat Orion; the funniest scenes are with Mrs. Shoumatoff, the middle-aged neighbor who insists on taking "that stray" to the vet to be neutered.
Needless to say, Jasper is more likable as a cat than in his human form, which he regains occasionally. Then, instead of dealing with their issues, Anica and Jasper just have mind-blowing sex, during which at one point he suddenly realizes this is love. Sigh. Lily, Dorcas, Ambrose, and even Orion are portrayed more realistically than these two. Anica is too much the stereotypical ditzy blonde (how can she run a successful business?), and Jasper is too much out for himself for too long.
The plot advances at a snail's pace until, as you might expect, Dorcas and Ambrose finally come back on scene with the only possible solution to the two problems (Jasper: I can't stay human; Anica: I lost my magical powers). The decisive moments that follow are very well done, and both Anica and Jasper show real character at long last. Then there's a rather unconvincing denouement. Overall: fun and tedious by turns, then just tedious, then very good, then oh for Pete's sake.
Hot, sexy, funny, entertainingly wicked, super cute read. Filled with a few little life lessons, hot steamy sex, and a whole lot of magic. Anica is not known to lose her temper, but Jasper Danes has just pushed her to the limit. With one spell she has changed both their lives forever. Wanting nothing more than to be rid of him, Anica has now made them attached more than ever. Gone with Jaspers human body, is Anica's magic. With the help of her sister Anica tries to reverse the spell and get her magic powers back. "Funny what becoming a cat could do to a guy's perspective." Parts in the beginning dragged a bit, but the story picks up. This is the first book in the series: A Babes on Brooms Novel. The second in the series: Chick with a Charm, continues with Anica's sister, Lily, story.
2.5 cute little stars. It was okay. The 1st chapter was great. Then, it turned into something like Groundhog Day...same thing over and over but, turns out, only like 2 days had gone by. Seemed like more time. I know it was supposed to be a Romcom but I only giggled a couple of times. Most of the jokes were cheesy. I did like Anica and Jasper's growth and I liked them as characters. Loved Lily.
The last 1/3 of the book was much better and I loved the ending.
Excerpt: From the Wild & Hexy imagination of a New York Times bestselling author
Sexy witch Anica Revere has one rule: never under any circumstances get involved with a man before telling him she's a witch. Still, what's one silly rule? Especially when the guy in question is as cute as Jasper Danes. But when Anica and Jasper have a spat, she breaks an ever bigger rule of witchcraft and turns him into a cat. Bad news for him. Worse for her..
If Jasper Danes were to meet any witch I’m sure he’d want to meet Samantha from Bewitched. That would be of course if he believed in witches after all. He met Anica Revere at her coffee shop “The Wicked Brew” and has fallen head over heals in…. lust with her. His plan when he took her out to dinner at La Boheme was to get laid. Not to get turned into a cat. Little did he know that he did not find his Samantha, but instead his Endora. Anica Revere knew she wanted to date Jasper Danes the moment he stepped into her coffee shop. The poor thing was suffering from a broken heart and she felt it was her duty to heal it. She did not plan on meeting Jasper’s ex-girlfriend that night at the dinner. Neither did she plan on finding out that Jasper was a liar and a good one at that. His trick of picking up girls by pretending to have a broken heart when the truth was that it was him breaking the hearts ended with her. When Jasper chased after her down the street she did what ever good witch did when being pursed by a rake; pulled out her wand. Little did she expect to loose her temper and recite a spell that she had read once in an old magic book; More so for that spell to end with Jasper a cat and her with no magic. This was the situation that found our hero and heroine in at the beginning of “Blond with a Wand”. “Blond with a Wand” was the first book I have ever read by Vicki Lewis Thompson and I have to admit I thoroughly enjoyed it. I really can’t remember the last time I have ever laughed so much while reading a book. From Jasper kitty nearly losing his “prize possessions” to Anica having to figure out how to deal with a boyfriend she’d turned into a cat this book was a major win from front to cover. My only complaint was that there was too much sex in the book. It really went to a point of ridiculousness sometimes. Most of the time I found myself just skipping the parts; especially the oral sex scenes. I’m the type of person who finds the act of oral sex just a tad disgusting and therefore cannot read it. Overall a great book and I look forward to reading the sequel which starts Anica’s sister Lily.
4 stars for: humor, great plot line, well written characters, believable romance, and a well written book from beginning to finish. It misses 5 stars for me for being a bit over sexed for my taste.

This is a solid Three Stars. And I'm going to break it down by what I didn't like, and what I did like. Overall all, though, would I buy it again? Yes. Will I buy the sequel? Yes.
The story begins on a date between Anica and Jasper where Anica finds out that Jasper lied to her in order to begin dating her; he comes after her and in haste she curses him. Unfortunately as a witch the spell cannot harm another and as a result she loses her powers. Jasper must find a way to counter the spell while relying on the woman who cursed him, and the only one who knows that he is a cat.
I wouldn't run out and say this was a great read, but it was fun and good. I don't think Thompson wanted great literature, I think she wanted entertainment. This would be a great film-to-movie (although some of the sex scenes might need to be toned down). I'll definitely pick up the sequel, but I think I'll hold off a bit.
Meet Anica Revere, witch and owner of a local coffee establishment called Wicked Brew. After dating a non-magical man named Jasper Danes for 3 weeks, she discoveres he is a lieing scumbag when it comes to women. SHe calls him out on it, and he trys to convince her otherwise. In the heat of the argument Anica accidentally invokes an anicent curse, turning him into a black cat. As a result, Anica has lost her magic powers until the curse is undone. Now the 2 of them must work together to figure out a way to break the curse before it breaks both of their sanity. (and before the busy-body neighbor tries to get Jasper neutered) This is a great story about finding one's self and the power of true love and self sacrifice.
Enough with the mushy stuff, the best part about this book is when Jasper is a cat, he still thinks like a red-blooded man. His antics are absolutely histerical! He surfs the web quite a bit (as a cat) LOL Anica's character was well written and shows she really is a sweet, compasionate person. We also get to meet Anica's sister, Lily who is percieved as a firey little vixen. The teenage fairies were a nice touch of humor too.
This book was fun and magical, but dont let the cute cover fool you. There is enough hot sex scenes to light anyones fire, however, they are not overly done like most erotica books. The ending left it open for the sequel, where we get to follow Lily along with her antics of a love potion gone wrong! Great series!!!!
Anica Revere's date Jasper Danes turns out to be fairly obnoxious and she accidentally turns him into a cat. The ancient curse just tripped off her lips and unfortunately isn't easy to reverse. The two learn some difficult life lessons while they attempt to turn him back into a human.
Anica's blunder is fairly humiliating as her magic is suspended and she is forced to beg her irresponsible sister for assistance. She has to learn to live like the rest of us mortals by cleaning up after herself and it was probably a good lesson to learn. The less power she has, the more she loosens up which makes her feel more human.
Jasper has a nasty habit of breaking up with girlfriends and telling his new beaus the same tear wrenching story. He really is the human equivalent of a tomcat. He spends much of his time as a cat plotting revenge on Anica but over time makes friends with her other cats and goes out of his way to help cats as he surfs the net. He is still fairly superficial though for much of the book as he thought he could fix his problem by throwing money at it.
The romance is very light and frothy as it is filled with giggle and cringe inducing scenes. Although I enjoyed it there wasn't really enough in it for me to want to go back and read it again. The neighbour obsessed with neutering male cats was a highlight.
Here you are on a date with a gorgeous guy, you both expect it to end in bed for the first time. While in the bathroom for one last appearance check you run into his ex, where you learn all sorts of things that ring true about him. On the walk back to your place you ask him about these things, he tries to dance around the lies he as told you. So what is a girl to do, well if you are Anica you turn him into a cat because you are a witch and he just isn't taking your shouts of "Get lost" seriously.
Welcome to Anica's life. Here she was all nervous about telling Jasper about her being a witch when he turns out to be a jerk. However once he is a cat she knows she can't leave him like that and tries to turn him back, unfortunately she isn't able to. As a last resort she scoops him up and brings him home thinking to fix it later. It seems like the more she tries the more nothing happens, so she calls in her sister, also a witch. Lily doesn't have any more luck than her. Resorting to call in the big wigs and take her punishment Anica calls the council. Here is where things get interesting. They find a way to work around the spell which is interesting for Jasper who must be involved in the fix. As the fix takes time we get to see all sorts of crazy antics.
While it's formulaic in the manner of most romances (where the outcome is, predictably, a romance), it delved into the growth of the characters far more than most. It wasn't about the setting or the actions as much as it was about the people involved. Both of the main characters saw significant personal growth and stretching of their limitations and prejudices throughout the story.
The sole flat note for me was in the epilogue which was trite, rather predictable, and involved two supporting characters who remained rather flat themselves through their brief appearances in the story.
The old standby Harlequin romance style hits me at a 1, other standard romances hit me at about a 2. Most paranormal romances come in at a 3. This one was a solid 4. There's clearly going to be a followup book and I'll happily read that.
A Chick-Lit story with plenty of humor and lovin'. The first 6 chapters was laugh out loud funny. The story then toned down with Anica, Jasper, and Lily trying to get poor Jasper back to a man.
The moral of this story..... Sacrifice for the sake of the one you love.
Best line in the book..... “Dollars to doughnuts that cat you found is not fixed." "Uh, no, I’m sure he’s not.” “I hope you’re planning to take care of that immediately. I can’t abide a male cat that’s not fixed.” Jasper suddenly went very still. "I know what you mean, Miss Shoumatoff,” Anica said. “I’ll take him in pronto.” It was the only reasonable response, after all. With a screech, the cat turned into a dervish again, fighting harder than ever to get loose. Edna laughed. “You’d think he understands English.”
Sort of in the Hex series without taking place in Big Knob. Same world with the same rules. We even get to see Dorcas and Ambrose again.
A witch finds out that her prospective paramour is a well polished player. So what does she do in her fit of fury? Bam! He's a cat. Heck of a way to find out your girlfriend is a witch. Now that he's learned his lesson turn him back. Except they can't. In fact our male love interest spends at least half the book as a cat. I think that it was so different is why I liked it so much. Of course I really like the light and fun style that Vicki Lewis Thompson brings to her romances.
This was such a fun read! I was laughing throughout the book. It was fun to imagine witches fitting into real life with us like Annika is in Chicago. I loved that she "accidentally" placed a terrible spell on Jasper and being a cat lover, I liked that it turned him into a cat. It was also fun to see him start to change throughout the book and that they were able to eventually break the spell with the help of Lily and some of her friends. Hoping the second book about Lily is just as fun!
i seen this in the book store and i had to read it well it remind me of me blonde or use to be and then she try to get the fairys to behave and not destroy her place and the buisness she owns wi relly like the book and want to get more of vickys book thumbsup all the way to the bank and the bf wow he put up with some stuff you cna not beleve it
This was a cute book! I have loved Vicki Lewis Thompson ever since her Nerd series came out and I was not disappointed. "Blonde With a Wand" is a great start to her new series. It was light and cute, with the right amount of fluff. I loved reading Jasper's point of view as a cat. Can't wait to read Lily's book next!
Funny, a little sexy and complex brain using story. Loved the extra characters - the crazy lady out to fix all cats and the couple Anica talks to about repairing the spell she used from a very, very old book - with no counter spell to reverse the problem.
Loved this book. The man-as-a-cat theme was original and funny. As a cat lover, I was amused to see a human live life as a cat. I enjoyed the witch aspect of the book. VLT has a way with humor, and this book was a great showcase of that.
Dorcas and Ambrose are in this one too, but the focus is on Anica, a witch who accidentally teaches Jasper a lesson and learns one herself. Nice twist on the love story.
A nice light, fun read. I really enjoyed this one and it had some laugh out loud moments. Jasper started out really arrogant, but he definitely changed for the better.
While on a date with Jasper, Anica has decided this will be The Night. Her plans are scuttled, however, when she encounters one of Jasper's old girlfriends, whose story of meeting Jasper sounds very much like how he and Anica hooked up...right down to the tale of woe that Jasper told to gain sympathy. Convinced that Jasper is nothing but a jerk, Anica ends the date and heads home. Jasper follows her and won't take no for an answer. In response, Anica draws her wand and turns him into a cat. Immediately horrified by what she's done, Anica scoops Jasper up and takes him home so she can undo the damage. Unfortunately, casting a harmful spell has caused her to lose her magic. Now, Anica must rely on her sister, Lily, and a witch and wizard from the Council to help her.
For his part, Jasper maintains his human mind while in cat form, and he is initially terrified of the changes that have befallen him. He blames Anica for his predicament, yet he knows she's his best hope of being returned to normal. When Jasper begins changing back to human, for short periods of time, it's up to him to figure out how to reverse the spell that Anica used.
The more time the two spend with one another, the more they become attracted to each other. There may be hope for a relationship yet, that is, if Jasper can be returned to a man full time, and if Anica's nosy neighbor doesn't succeed in forcing Anica into getting her "new" cat to the vet to be neutered.
A lite, paranormal romance that I found amusing, lovely, and annoying at various times. Jasper was an utter ass at the beginning, but it was heartening to see how he was able to acknowledge that he'd been a jerk, and even to realize how he'd driven Anica to lash out when he kept pressing her after she'd walked away from him. Anica's neighbor needed a bitch slap. It's one thing to advise someone to get a cat altered; it's quite another to barge into the apartment, past Julie, the woman who was house-sitting, and literally snatch the cat to take it to the vet. I understand it was a plot device to put Jasper in a position of being fearful and intimidated by someone larger than he, but all I could think was, if someone tried to do that with one of my cats, they'd be getting a face full of claws, and I'm not talking about the cat's claws.
