An interesting promotion and some graphic novel wisdom, but relatively so-so. As much as I liked the artwork, I didn't always know what I was looking at or what was happening. So, I think this was an ambitious concept that fell short of its promise. But more avid graphic novel readers might get more from it, so could be that I'm just an okay reader ;)

The art style is unique and selective;
The story has good bones, plot moves along with characters' choices.
Where this book lack is excitement, not for lack of trying, I can see something added into the story to address the issue but it just didn't get fully developed.

The story wasn't actually that bad once I got into it, a primitive society, and a war between a war monger and his drug addicted brother sent out on a spying mission who finds his lost love and a previously unknown child. It was hard to ignore the simplicity of the artwork however. Had the pacing been a little better and the art more defined, I think it could have been much better and commercialy viable. Some of the art remindeded me of very early Matt Wagner.

I enjoyed the idea and the artwork. I did get the feeling that the story was a bit rushed. The only thing that really took away from the story however was more telling than showing, meaning on some scenes the narration got in the way of what we could see. I did like the novel and would be interested in more.
