In one of the proverbial "three o'clock in the mornings" that Lucy Maud Montgomery is so fond of cataloging for posterity, I awoke last night to remember a series of books I had read fifteen years ago... The "Alex books." In fact, as I lay in bed recounting titles like "Hot Chocolate Friendship" and "Shoelaces and Brusselsprouts" I wracked my brain for a 9-year-old girl I could buy these books for! I would HIGHLY recommend Nancy Levene's "Alex Series" to anyone looking for uplifting and captiviating stories for young girls... The author has such an excellent gift for capturing the essence and excitement of girlhood. I know your little girls will LOVE these books!
I pulled this out from my book stash from the 80’s this past weekend for my 6 year old. Although he is already on the 3rd chapter, I thought I should read it over. It has name calling throughout the book and them talking about a student and make mention that he is dumb for not doing school work other than art. Some of the name calling I’ll have to explain to my on as he hasn’t heard any of this before. Chapter 3 also could be a little scary for younger children if reading aloud to them. There is a spooky noise and ghosts are mentioned (It turns out to be a new puppy in the basement)
