O perspectivă interesantă a unui irlandez educat, cu un bun simț al observației și nelipsita ironie despre Țările Române aflate în plin proces de căutare a independenței de sub Imperiul otoman și cel țarist. O lectură ușoară, plăcută (cartea se citește în câteva ore). Animat de profunde sentimente rusofobe, autorul nu scapă niciun prilej să atragă atenția asupra impredictibilității Imperiului țarist ca jucător între puterile europene. Bun cunoscător al armelor și strategiilor militare, face numeroase observații pertinente despre trupele ruse și otomane cu care se întâlnește prin periplul său.

An interesting travelogue written by a then freshly elected British MP, born in Ireland. O'Brien describes with great attention to detail what he sees and analyzes with much clarity the historical context of the time - the beginning of what was to be known as the Crimean War-, as well as the ingrained situation of the Romanian Principalities, showing a compassion for their unfortunate destiny, as well as a certain sympathy for the Romanian peasant. Also, his deep-seated anti-Russian attitude and his plea for choosing the lesser evil - that is Turkey - as a hegemonic power in the Balkans at the expense of the wolfish Russia is worth noting, although it is not at all surprising coming from a citizen of a country known as a longtime supporter of the Ottoman Empire.

Se citeste foarte usor si asemanarile dintre atunci si acum sunt socante. Foarte interesante comparatiile intre viata la tara in Romania si in Irlanda, de asemenea. Un backpacker avant la lettre!
