It’s mostly just a summary of the novel presented without a great deal of insight until the last chapter. It kindled my desire to reread In Search of Lost Time and I do appreciate that. The last chapter had enough to earn a fourth star from me but just barely.

I came across this book for a dollar just as I was reading Swann's Way and Harold Pinter's screenplay that condenses all seven volumes. It doesn't contain any amazing insights and I can't believe there's anything here that wasn't already stated in previous studies, but as a summary of the plot, the major themes and some details of Proust's life, it's very useful. Otherwise it's much too careful and reticent: Fowlie doesn't even delve very deeply into the fact that almost none of the characters are heterosexual!
