Five-Yard Fuller

Rate this book
A young adult novel. Clarence Fuller is a big farm boy who decides to play football for the Knights, a professional football team who are perennial losers. While the coach doubts Fuller's ability, he gives him a chance to carry the ball in practice. Fuller scores and is immediately made part of the team.

Complications abound, however, when Ma Fuller decides that her son can't play. The result is hilarity as the coach promises her just about anything to get Five-Yard Fuller back on his team.

Definitely a kids book but fun for all that. I remembered the book very fondly from when I was young and reread it now as an adult. I still got a kick out of it, although many of the hijinks are predictable.

One thing of interest, the Adam Sandler movie called "The Waterboy" seems to be based in large part on this novel. There are just too many similarities for it to be a coincidence, although I never heard anyone associated with the movie say anything about the book.
