Adapted from the novel by Mary Webb, Gone to Earth is the story of a free-spirited country lass, who is loved both by the wicked squire and the altruistic minister. Edmundson has incorporated folk-dance, song and dialect into the rural Shropshire setting. It is a style well-suited to Shared Experience, the company that produced Edmundson’s acclaimed adaptations of Anna Karenina and The Mill on the Floss.

Wow. This book made such a strong impression on me. Again, the main character is a strong-willed woman skirting the line between light and dark, right and wrong. I cried for 1/2 hour after reading the last page.
awesome command of language: description of gardens and the woods were so vivid you could nearly hear the bees, and feel the rain. Hazel, an innocent, rustic was loved by 2 men, neither of whom understood her. Read it and find out what Edward and Reddin did to her. You'll like it.
I'd expected to like this but was disappointed by it - the plot seemed very predictable and I didn't believe in any of the characters. I have found it sticks in my mind, though.
