Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.

Re-read 2023

After all the drama of the previous two books where Elizabeth is in an accident and becomes a bad girl, we're back to some regular teen angst.

Mainly Jessica Wakefield deciding that surfer hottie, Bill Chase is her next target. Described as a young Robert Redford (which the cover model does not convey), Bill and Jessica are in the leads in SVH'S production of Splendor in the Grass.

While Bill is all googly eyed over Jessica, her interest is mainly to exact revenge for Bill's rejection of her in the past. What Jessica doesn't expect is that shy girl DeeDee Gordon is actually interested in Bill Chase. Added in as subplots are Elizabeth's worry that an old girlfriend of Todd's may be sabotaging their relationship and Roger Barrett's unrequited love for Lila Fowler.

Love the drama and the angst but I am trying not to judge my eleven year old self for craving these books like a cold Pepsi on a hot day.

First things first: take a look at that absolute hunk of manhood on the front cover. I'm not sure whether standards were just that different in the early eighties or whether the cover artist was playing a joke on all the readers who had to read about Bill Chase being good looking without bursting into laughter every time they caught sight of his portrait.

The book itself follows one of the most popular SVH patterns: someone suddenly becomes more interesting to the general school populace and Jessica or one of her friends decides to make a play for them. (See also: Racing Hearts, Rags to Riches, etc etc etc) This one has the added element of Jess doing it all for sweet sweet revenge because Bill was stupid enough to refuse her invitation to accompany her to a school dance, once upon a time. Revenge in this case is Jess making the foolish boy fall desperately in love with her, and then dangling him on a string for the majority of the book.

There's also one of the first big continuity issues with the books, courtesy of Jess getting surfing lessons from Bill when one of the early books talk about how excellent a surfer she is.

Of course, over on the sidelines, there's a girl who has always been there for the boy, and in this case that's DeeDee Gordon, who artfully conspires to almost drown in order to get some mouth-to-mouth from her crush. (Except this isn't Jess we're talking about, so she really does almost drown. But it's okay—there'll be a fake drowning in a few books' time.)

Meanwhile, Liz is having conniptions because Todd's ex-girlfriend is back in town, and she is far too beautiful for Liz's liking. Everyone feels the need to tell Liz how in-love Todd and Patsy used to be, and Liz decides that one hug means that Todd is absolutely cheating on her and refuses to so much as speak to him ~forever~, conveniently forgetting that in the last book she was hooking up with every boy in Sweet Valley and letting 1BRUCE1 touch her boobs, while I doubt Todd's even allowed to look at them.

Another continuity issue here, although this time it's an inter-series one, with Todd apparently having been with Patsy before he even knew Liz, whereas we Sweet Valley tragics know he was her first kiss in Sweet Valley Twins and one of her good friends in Sweet Valley Kids. I guess it's like the different Marvel universes. Sweet Valley 616?

This is one of my less-favoured early books, largely due to me finding Bill Chase extraordinarily dull. Duller even than Todd Dull As Dishwater Wilkins.

Moral of the Story? Drowning is super sexy.

My first Sweet Valley High. Sigh. I bought it at Perry's five and dime in Seymour, Texas. I was twelve. I wasn't even bleeding yet. Until I stumbled across the scandalous world of Sweet Valley, California my knowledge of the dark art of breaking hearts was scant, indeed. I'd enjoyed watching Hope in action on "Days of Our Lives." Lucy blew my mind on "Dallas." But this is the first book I can recall reading that made me think,"So that's how it's done. This is what it means to be a hot ass bitch."

Again, Jessica at her most maniacal.

It's so jarring to read her as a straight psychopath, with almost no redeeming qualities except being beautiful. I do really appreciate that as the series went on, she became at least more funny and ridiculous, instead of a stone-cold bitch.

The things she does to Bill and DeeDee in this are just ugh.

Original SnarkSquad recap here.

Jessica Wakefield was once turned down by sufer dude Bill Chase. So, naturally, she spends the book seducing and manipulating him, because these books are about nothing if they aren't about teaching young, impressionable youths amazing life lessons.

We're introduced to the B-plot pretty early on as well and it comes in the form of Todd’s never-mentioned-before-long-lost-super-model-looking-ex-girlfriend-who-moved-back-to-town, Patsy Weber.

DeeDee is in love with Bill so Jessica spends the book cockblocking her. Liz spends the book worrying about all the time Todd is spending with his hot ex-girlfriend.

Bo Derek is mentioned in this book again. That has nothing to do with the actual plot, but I thought you would like to know anyways.

In all, for an SVH book, this one doesn't have the usual theatrics, but it is inappropriate enough to heavily snark. Enjoy.

Quotes from the recap:

Liz runs into Roger who happens to be the janitor in her dad’s building. He janitor-s, he explains, so his family can pay rent. Liz is momentarily reminded that there are bigger problems in the world than skanks in string bikinis.

DeeDee almost drowns. Well. That’s more realistic, thank you. It’s totally okay though because Bill pulls Dee out of the water than calls a lifeguard or a paramedic. Someone to check her out. LOL. JAYKAY. They start making out and Bill realizes Dee is very special to him. (And super hot. Apparently almost drowning does wonders for a girl’s appearance. Noted.)

Picking up where we left off as these books often do our favourite sociopathic twin is leading on poor Bill. All he wants is to surf and find love again after his beloved girlfriend died. He is helping another girl Dee Dee learn how to surf, but of course Jessica has to butt in whenever he pays Dee Dee any attention. Then she learns that Dee Dee's dad is a Hollywood producer and he's coming to watch the play she and Bill are starring in and believes she has caught his eye and will be famous soon. Oh Jessica you are truly the worst. A b plot involves Liz newly recovered from her coma and whatever happened to her after becoming jealous when an old girlfriend of Todd's shows up in Sweet Valley. Once a gawky plain Jane Patsy is a drop dead gorgeous girl now and Todd is getting a bit too cozy with her. What the hell Todd? Seriously as a kid I loved Todd now part of me can't wait til he moves away and Liz hooks up with that soccer player Jeffrey (Geoffrey? Its been a while since I read these) Of course it's innocent. Jessica gets her comeuppance as she always does this was a fun light and trashy read as they all are.

Title: Heart Breaker
Series: Sweet Valley High #8
Author: Kate William and Francine Pascal
Overall Rating: 2.9 stars

Okay, so Bill Chase turned down Jessica once and now she's on mission, Make Bill Fall Madly In Love With You Then Act Like The Worst Person In The World. I hated Jess in this book, she really lost her humanity that she gained in the previous one, she also spent most of the book being a cockblock between DeeDee and Bill.

Sidenote: It shouldn't take a near death experience for you to realise that you love someone Bill. Flip me.

Elizabeth was also pretty annoying in this book, weh, my boyfriend is friends with his ex, weh. Oh smack me, but she can go about with everyone in the previous book. I don't care if she wasn't psychologically stable. Stop having double standards.

Why do I still read these books? I don't know, they're like a guilty pleasure. Also I never read every single sweet valley book. I will do it...one day...

I refuse to accept that the people on the cover are in high school. I refuse.

Jessica continues to be a sociopath. Like honestly this would have made an amazing thriller series if Francine Pascal had actually addressed this about her character. Because she is AWFUL. And she gets away with everything! Even her "comeuppance" at the end is never enough to make up for how terrible she is.

Also, Liz, seriously, we did the whole "I saw Todd with another girl so therefore he MUST be cheating on me" thing literally two books ago and you wound up in a motorcycle crash, have you learned nothing?!

Speaking of Liz, I had to lol when she stumbled upon Roger Barrett doing janitor work and comforted herself by saying "at least she wasn't the only one with problems." Now sis... I think worrying about your family making rent is slightly more of a problem than you being an idiot about Todd.

I was obsessed with these books when I was younger, started reading them when I was 7 years old. This one was the first one I read. I wanted to be nostalgic so when I found this in the used book store I was excited. I was so sad when I got rid of over a hundred of these books. Mint condition, because I had to move.

But re-reading this, it was terrible. So many problems with the way things were written in the 80s. It made me sad. But then at the end of the book I wanted to read the next one because I couldn’t remember what happened to the new side character in the next book! Damn you ghost writer for leading me on with that cliff hanger. I am no longer sad I don’t have them!

I can still remember when I first saw this book in my grade school library (3rd or 4th grade?). I was entranced by the cover. I wanted to do that to a boy's necklace. So seductive. Thus I entered the sun-dappled world of Sweet Valley High.

Heartbreaker
Plot: Bill and Jessica are doing this play together at SHV and she’s teasing him by making him repeatedly kiss her in front of everyone. (He’s kinda like her plaything in this one. She likes to have him on the side *hanging on* but she makes it no secret she’s messing around with other guys). Bill was into Elizabeth and he went out with Jessica thinking it was Liz in the last book. When she told him he really liked Jessica he protested, but then she said yes you do because that’s who I am.” (Ok this can happen. It’s happened to me. I was getting to know this guy I meet on My Space *yeah yeah I know* and I thought I was talking to him one day on Facebook, turned out I was talking to his cousin. The cousin and I got interested and started talking. Like Bill and Jessica, it didn’t last).
Liz doesn’t approve of the way Jessica keeps dangling Bill on a string, but she just laughs it off. “She doesn’t feel bad about it. It’s exact a ly what he gets.” (for turning her down a little while back) *which we don’t get a chance to read about in any of the previous books*. Meanwhile, in another plot Patsy Webber (Todd’s ex super-model- looking girlfriend) is back in town. Now Liz is all insecure and paranoid. Dee Dee Gordan is also in the play and she’s always checking Bill out. But Jessica is always c-blocking. Every time Dee-Dee and Bill start to bond, here she comes OVER and OVER and OVER in this book. And the head he *should* be listening to reverts to the other one. We get some background on Bill’s old girlfriend Julianna (who resembles Jessica and Elizabeth which his fixation on them because of that is DISTURBING- Just the fact alone that all these blond-haired blue-eyed Wakefield clones are every damn where is DISTURBING). Before Bill moved to Sweet Valley High he went to another school and he and Julianna meet when they were freshmen. But of them were into each other, but just to shy to say anything to each other. Then they realized they were both into surfing. They had lots of other things in common and everything was good. That is until they were sophomores and Bill accused Juliann of flirting with Eddie Roth. Julianna left, got in a car accident, and died leaving Bill devastated. It even hints that he tried to commit suicide (he goes out surfing and there’s a storm). His family moves to Sweet Valley and just as he’s starting to get Julianna out of his head, he meets Liz (and Jess). Liz reminds him of Julianna and he’s right back in love again. He thinks “Some people are doomed as far as love is concerned” TRUE! But I think maybe Bill just needs to stay away from blond, blue-eyed, girls as they seem to be bad luck for him. He cries a little.
On the beach, Jessica again blocks Dee-Dee and Bill’s surf lesson. Dee-Dee doesn’t EVER fit back like I wish she would and snap. “Umm. Excuse you! You’re in the middle of something!” Why is everyone so scared of Jessica? I mean is she apart of the Illuminati? She goes off and cries (I shake my head at the weakness of the SVH female and male student body). Patsy shows up in a next to nothing swimsuit (probably a thong back and one that just covers her nipples) and Liz feels like Cinderella before the ball. But then Patsy used to live in France (NUFF SAID). Olivia drops the bomb that Patsy and Todd never really broke up. (How can you never really break up? You don’t have to say the words and you can promise to stay together but we’ll see books from now how well this worked for Todd and Liz). Todd has a talk with Bill about Jessica and he tells him you have to friends first and Bill thinks that this is the way it was with him and Julianna but does love have to be the same way all the time. (Love?). But then if it isn’t love why does it feel this way? Why does Jess stay on his mind? And if it isn’t love why does it hurt so bad and make him feel so sad inside? The Wakefield’s have another pool party and Jessica is now all on Tom McKay’s tip (despite Bill being there). Todd has somehow untied Patsy’s bikini top and is rubbing lotion on her back. UH YEAH and then when Liz sees this, gets upset, and goes up to her room and doesn’t open the door for him he acts clueless like “What did I do?” (I seriously wanna smack Todd upside the head. Why again so people think he and Liz are so ideal?) Then we learn about Roger Barrett who’s a student at SVH and Liz finds out he’s a janitor, but he doesn’t want anyone to know. And we find out he’s in love with Lila (who we know will NEVER give him the time of day). Dee Dee’s Dad is a big Hollywood agent and he’s looking for the next big thing. I think he went to one of the rehearsals and he was impressed by one of them and Dee Dee says he has a surprise for one of them. Naturally, Jessica starts fantasizing that *she’ ll* be the one he discovers and Liz will be her stunt double. (Wow does she even know that stunt doubles do all the dangerous stuff in the movies? And she *seriously* thinks Liz will be remotely interested in this?)
Liz sees Todd and Patsy in an embrace by the lockers and jumps to the conclusion it’s over. Jessica actually tells her maybe it’s not what she thinks it is and she should probably talk to him. It’s probably all in her head. There’s a cast party and Bill asks Jessica but she turns him down because she already made plans with Tom McKay. So he goes to the beach and spends time with Dee-Dee whose practicing to be in a surfing competition (which doesn’t make the slightest bit of sense considering he JUST started teaching her to surf not that long ago). Bill thinks at least one girl wants to spend time with him, but he’s depressed about Jessica. Dee-Dee is practicing and wipes out. He rescues Dee-Dee (redeeming himself to himself for not saving Julianna) when he performs CPR on her. He carries her to the beach in his arms, dries, her off, and apologizes to her. Then they kiss. Dee-Dee asks about Jessica and he kisses her again and says “Jessica who.” Dee Dee places third in the competition (making me think that the *lessons* she wanted from Bill were all a front to get next to him). Jessica doesn’t seem bothered that they’ve hooked up because she has her sights set on Hollywood men. The play goes great but Dee Dee’s Dad discovery is Bill, not Jessica. She blames Dee-Dee. She goes over to Bill and asks him to go to the dance with her and AGAIN Bill is too weak-minded to tell her to kick rocks. She tells him “She’ll meet him there”. Dee-Dee runs into Roger and they agree to go to the party together Screw Bill and Lila both! At the party, Jessica is all on Bill when Dee-Dee and Roger walk in. He drops Jessica (spills his drink on her) and rushes to Dee-Dee and tells Jessica (what he should have told her all along) “I’m over you!” Now Jessica leaves crying (FOR WHAT? LIKE SHE GAVE A DAMN IN THE FIRST PLACE). And now Bill and Dee-Dee are official

My Thoughts: Can we just talk about how people like Jessica are full of BS? They don’t want to have anything to do with you for however long until you don’t want to have anything to do with them. Then they’re all in your face and in your space CONSTANTLY! And it really just MAKES ME MAD! Maybe because to me it’s personal. The story was just so-so. I didn’t like Jessica because she reminds me of someone in my family! I didn’t like Bill because I thought it was creepy as hell he’s fixated on the twins because of his dead girlfriend. I didn’t like Bill because like SO MANY other guys he was a good thing right in his face with Dee-Dee and what does he do blow it off for “the sexy one” who doesn’t give an ish about him and constantly plays him to his face, but that’s who he’d rather chase after time after time after time. I didn’t like Bill because just like SO many other SVH guys he is WEAK! Though I slightly felt bad for him about Julianna. I didn’t like Todd, because Todd is as dumb as a sack of rocks. What if Elizabeth was sitting there rubbing on a guy’s back and he had his pants unzipped and his shirt off and muscles all on fleek. What then? Would he STILL not see the problem with that? I didn’t like Dee-Dee because like ALL the SVH girls with crushes what’s the first thing they do when they come up against opposition? Run off and cry in the bathroom somewhere. Yes, I’m a female. I know sometimes emotions get the best of us but can I just see a strong, female, that has some semblance of a spine? Can’t I just see ONE that has a crush one a SVH guy and tells whoever (Jessica, Lila, Amy) to “Bow Down Bitches!”. But sadly I don’t think that’s gonna happen. It’s just SAD the mentality shows of females in this series. We really are stronger than that. I didn’t like Patsy because even if she didn’t want Todd like that, she knew he was with Elizabeth so why was she hugging all up on him and taking off her top in front of him. There are some lines you just DO NOT cross with another woman’s man. And TRUST me I am VERY careful about this having a best friend who’s a man that’s married. So no this book just did not do anything for me. The best part of this book was that Jessica lost getting the screenplay and Bill.

I really wish we could get an explanation for why so many boys are so into Jessica besides just "she's blond and hot" or whatever.

I mean, I get it--for most teen boys who are attracted to girls, that's often all it takes. But in these books, it's not just "Dang, I wanna hit that" but like "OMG I'm so in love with her and it'll crush my soul if she doesn't love me back" and I'm just like...why.

However, I do think that this entry in the series does a bit of a better job at showing just how ridiculous Jessica is and how unworthy she is of the attention she craves. The way she acts with Bill is so blatantly phony. She doesn't want to date him but she wants him to want to date her, and when he shows even a modicum of interest in another girl, Jessica can't deal with it and forces his attention back on her. Which of course wasn't very difficult, because through most of the book, Bill keeps going back to "but Jessica is so pretty" and whatever. But eventually, he does see the light, and we also get to see that Jessica is really just a jerk.

The second plot, which honestly felt like it should have be the main one, between Elizabeth and Todd was a little overwrought, although I could understand her not wanting to just use her words and ask Todd what was going on between him and his ex-girlfriend. At that age (perpetually 16) it's tough to have that kind of conversation, especially if you're afraid it might lead to a break-up. And it was quite understandable for her to be worried. Although Todd did come across like a total dimwit, acting like he had no idea why Liz would be worried about him splashing around in the surf and wrapping his arms around his sexy lived-in-Paris-for-a-while ex. Like, dude. Come on.

So, I don't know. There's not much substance to this one (though there isn't much substance to any of these books) but it was enjoyable enough to revisit, mainly because it felt like Francine Pascal (or whoever) finally wanted us to see Jessica for the self-centered twit that she is.

(Oh, bonus points to Roger for offering Deedee a handkerchief when she was crying. This book was published in 1984, and I may have only been in preschool at that time, but I'm pretty sure teenagers weren't walking around with fucking hankies in their pockets.)

I honestly really didn't like this story much. Bill Chase was just such a boring character. Jess is a huge bitch as always in these earlier books, which drives me crazy. And Liz is losing her mind when Todd's old girlfriend moves back to Sweet Valley looking hotter than ever. She thinks there is something going on between them but instead of just ASKING him, she ignores him for a couple of weeks and we get a book full of annoying Liz angst. Sigh. Definitely not my favorite.

Jessica has set her mind to making Bill pay for doing the unthinkable. Many years ago, she asked him to the Sadie's Hawkings Dance. And he rejected her! She has him wrapped around her finger and madly in love with her. But can she keep up her game or will it get blown up in her face?

I really loved this book! I love this whole series. This series has to be one of my favorite series of all times. Each has its own lesson. And well just seeing the chaos Jessica is always trying to cook up is very entertaining as well. This time around, I've been reading the entire series in order. Which is something I've never had the chance to do before.

I guess the only thing I have a problem with is that the books are so short. But I don't really even have a problem with that. I love that they are short. It's a nice easy read for when you are working or in between books. A nice reprieve if you will.

I not only fully recommend this book, I fully recommend the whole series! Every single story is inspiring and adorable in their own way. It's impossible not to read these books and not fall in love with the characters. It's also impossible not to relate to the characters so much!

Jessica has a new admirer in Bill, the surfer we first saw in book five. In typical Jessica fashion, she's over him the moment he is interested and instead sets her sights on the next pursuit. Bill and her continue to work on the school play together as leads. Classmate DeeDee has family connections to Hollywood and hints at one of the students landing an audition. With nothing more than this to go on, Jessica is convinced she is the star. Turns out it was Bill. Bill and DeeDee fall for each other during some surfing lessons. Elizabeth and Todd have another classic case of miscommunication when his old flame Patsy comes to Sweet Valley. Well, sort of. Todd has a good reason for why he was consoling Patsy (boyfriend split up with her from France) but no explanation why he was slathering suntan lotion on her unstrapped bikini back! These books are a wild ride.

Oh, Jessica Wakefield, you little minxbitch. Jessica spends this book using her feminine wiles to string along wounded longer surfer Bill, who looks like Owen Wilson, even though she's not particularly interested in him beyond extracting some revenge for when he turned hwr down for a date in random timeline passed. In the meantime, Todd's ex girlfriend rwtuena to Sweet Valley High, turning Elizabeth into an insecure mess. And minor character without any actual character traits of her own DeeDee Gordon is actually in love with Bill. Eventually she almost drowns while he is giving her a surfing lesson and he realizes hus friend DeeDee may not be Wakefield hot, but she's at least not a sociopath. 2 stars.

What can I do but laugh? Bill and Dee Dee are booooooooring, but Liz assuming Todd is cheating on her yet again is hilarious. There was a great line from Enid, something like, 'What's wrong, Liz? I haven't seen you this upset since the last time you and Todd broke up.' I think it happens in just about every book! I can't remember why they actually break up later in the series...and then get back together yet again...and then again and again at university. Jessica rightfully gets so much flack, but Liz and Todd have the most unstable relationship of all time.

Loved Jessica getting humiliated at the party. About time! And I look forward to the next book so that Lila is no longer a totally empty name on the page where her entire personality is that she's rich.

Wow, Francine Pascal's "Sweet Valley High" series reads a whole 'nother way 20 years later. Talk about a series that is written to make teenage girls think they need to be "All American" in the blond-hair, blue-eye, slender, athletic, wealthy way in order to fit into the high school scene. Very glad that when I was reading this series as a pre-teen/teen, I only vaguely let it sway my self-assessments.

Meh. This instalment of Sweet Valley High was a bit of a drag. Elizabeth cried floods of tears and that pretty much sums up everything that happened. She cried, she cried some more, the book even ended with her crying - albeit this time in happiness. Actually now that I think about it, her boyfriend Todd cries a lot too, so they’re a perfect match. *eye roll* Onto the next.
