Smith was born in Villa Park, Orange County, California. In interviews, she has said she realized she wanted to be a writer sometime between kindergarten and first grade, “when a teacher praised a horrible poem I’d written”, and began writing in earnest in elementary school. Smith received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Experimental Psychology from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1987, followed by teaching credentials in Elementary education and Special education from San Francisco State University.

She taught kindergarten and special education for several years before becoming a full-time writer. Her first book, The Night of the Solstice, was published by MacMillan in 1987, followed by, Heart of Valor in 1990, and the 4-volume Vampire Diaries series in 1991-2. Three trilogies followed: The Secret Circle (1992), The Forbidden Game (1994), and Dark Visions (1995). The first installment of her popular Night World series was published in 1996, followed by eight more over the next two years. In 1998, Smith began a decade-long hiatus from writing, returning in 2008 with a new Web site and a series of new short stories. The Vampire Diaries series was reissued in 2007, followed by re-printings of The Secret Circle trilogy and Night World series in 2008/2009. The Night of the Solstice and Heart of Valor was also reissued in 2008. Three new Vampire Diaries installments were published in 2009 and 2010.

Many readers find L.J. Smith's books not edgy enough or too juvenile by today's YA standards, but I happen to thoroughly enjoy the writing style of her novels. I think LJS, not Stephanie Meyer, was the first writer who gave a start to so popular nowadays genre of YA paranormal romance. Too many authors now rely heavily on sexual chemistry and make-out sessions to attract readers to their books at the expense of good plot. Smith's romances are very well balanced in that respect IMO. Although short, they have just enough story to never get boring or slow down the pacing of the narration. Plus just enough quantity of tastefully done teenage passion to spice things up (never any sex though if you were wondering). This collection of 3 more Night World books is no exception.

What I like the most about Night World series is that although its the premise is rather hokey - it is basically a series of love stories between immortals and regular humans bound by the soulmate ties - the romances do not really succumb to cliches. Smith has enough imagination to keep each installment fresh and interesting.

"Dark Angel" is about Gillian, who is saved from drowning by her "Guarding Angel," who first guides her to turn her life around for the better, but then gradually pushes her to do things of a very un-angelic nature.

"The Chosen" is a story of Rashel - a vampire slayer whose purpose in life is to avenge the deaths of her family, but who finds herself in love with her mortal enemy - a vampire.

"Soulmate" explores the ideas of reincarnated soulmates and the origins of vampirism.

Each story also adds to the overall series arc, we gradually learn more and more about the Night World, the conflicts within it and the dangers of the looming Apocalypse.

My only problem with this series is that Smith is too fixated on vampires and witches. Will I ever read a Night World story of hers about a werewolf or some other paranormal creature? I'll have to read the last volume to investigate.

i remember falling in love with this book because my young self thought the girl on the cover looked like me.

that of all the girls i read about, here was one with black hair like me (never mind the fact that i'm chinese and she's still white)—and because of that, i felt SUCH AFFINITY with rashel. i don't remember much of the stories, and i'm fairly certain i wouldn't give them 5 stars today. but it's been ten years and i still remember her name.

that's how desperate, how hungry, i was for representation. that's how important it is to have diverse characters—so that people, kids, can see that their stories matter beyond just superficial similarities like hair colour.

and that's how far YA/MG lit has come: i see more and more of myself every day. not nearly enough, but certainly more than when my younger self pined after a black-haired night world girl.

Five stars for Rashel. God I love that girl. 5th book of the Night World series, she is an orphan badass freaking ninja that kills all the bad vampires searching for the one that killed her mom and best friend. On her birthday. Ouch... Dark Angel is pretty good. "Angel" is a very good character, but since the beginning I could tell what was going to happen to Gillian and all. Soulmate is a good one, Hannah is a very old Soul. And her soulmate is none other than the first made vampire and she has a bad blood feud with Maya, the first of them all vampires

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

2016, still love Rashel.

In Dark Angel, Gillian is the quiet girl no one ever really notices. She's lonely, and is suffering from her parents' crumbling relationship. It's while walking home from school one winter day that she falls into an icy river, and dies. On her way to heaven, she meets Angel, her handsome guardian angel, who insists that it's not her time yet, and makes her return to earth. But instead of going to back to her meek and quiet life, Gillian is transformed into the most popular girl in school--with Angel's help. But when Angel begins to manipulate Gillian into doing things she doesn't want to do, she must question everything she thought she knew about him and herself.

Rashel is strong, mentally and physically, and hardened against life's injustices, a result of witnessing her mother's murder at the hands of a vampire. Now she has devoted her life to tracking down her mother's killer, becoming the most feared vampire hunter among the Night Worlders. But when a chance encounter with the vampire Quinn, who has a reputation to match Rashel's, leaves the both of them confused--and very much alive--they discover a bond between the both of them that could be their undoing in The Chosen.

In Soulmate, Hannah's life is perfect: she has a great mother, a scholarship to her college of choice, and wonderful friends...except for one thing: she is going insane. Puzzling dreams and notes she's written but has no recollection of leave her miserable and frightened. But during her therapy sessions with a small town shrink, the shocking truth comes out. Hannah has been reincarnated since the dawn of Night World, following her soulmate Thierry, Lord of the Night World and immortal vampire. But as memories of past lives resurface, Hannah finds she doesn't entirely trust Thierry, and Maya, the original vampire, would very much like to rip Hannah to shreds.

Like the first volume of the Night World books, Night World Vol. 2 is a supernatural lover's dream book. Smith's stories, though they revolve around the same beings, are all very inventive and unique. Her characters are varied and all have colorful personalities, which gives the concept of the Night World such authenticity. Smith's writing also has an air of sophistication and ease that is very simple and enjoyable to read, but at the same time, deals with many complex issues. Like with the first volume, there is plenty of doomed romance and danger, but rather than coming across as cheesy, it is adventurous and polished.

Also in this volume, readers get a feel for the changes that are going on in the Night World, set in motion by the original characters from Secret Vampire (Volume 1), Poppy and James, and Smith also adds some Night World history and lore in Soulmate. These little qualities that lend credibility to a comprehensive picture of the Night World are what distinguishes Smith's paranormal realm from the many others floating around in the genre, and make for a truly enjoyable reading experience. L.J. Smith is a master at mysterious, action-filled, romantic, and suspenseful reads.

Ok, so the second book wasen't nearly as good as the first. But I really like it! The first story, Dark Angel, was good. But it felt different from the other Night World stories. It was a different atmosphere, there weren't really any vampires, werevolves, or witches in it. Which makes the story a bit dull. Oh but Ash popped in it. Ooohh la la, haha. Gotta love Ash, so that was a nice bonus. The main character, Gillian, was cute, shy, I liked her. So she dies, but then ocmes back because of "Angel" Who I absolutely loved. He was fun, kirly, and cocky, and added life to the story. Basically the story is about a nobody in high school who becomes a somebody, all thanks to Angel.

Ok but the second story, The Chosen, was absolutely AMAZING! Probably my fave of all the stories so far. The main character, Rashel, is a vampire slayer! The most famous and deadly one known to Night World. How much cooler can u get?? Seriously. She was strong, independent, and most importantly, fierce! The whole story was adventerous and thrilling. It reminded me of a Charlie's Angels episode. That story is what brought this rating up to 4 stars! It was amazing. End of story. And Quinn, her soulmate, reminded me of Ash, but not as good. But I liked him a whole lot.

Ok, the final story is Soulmate. It was well... weird. The main character, Hannah, is an "old soul" which means she reincarnates. And every life she lived she died befor the age of 17, and that's when her soulmate, Thierry comes in. And I love me some Thierry. It's a very interesting story. It kept my turning the pages. Oh and a lot of the main characters in the previous stories, popped in for a Circle Daybreak meeting. That was my favorite chapter EVER. Whenever I see a previous character pop in a story, I get so giddy it's not even fuuny. So to see ALL those characters overwhelmed me, it was a nice bonus.

OK, so I liked this book a lot. Oh and he second story, The Chosen, was AWESOME! Sorry, I had to squeeze that in there one more time. ;)

Same as the first one, I'm giving this three stars, though if Goodreads allowed half-star ratings, this would have been 3 and a half stars, just because I liked this compilation better than the first volume. The first book (Dark Angel) gets 2 stars because of the maudlin dialogue but the latter stories (The Chosen, Soulmate) get 3 stars each; Soulmate because of sentimental value I suppose (this was the first Night World book I read) and the characters were good looking AND more kickass than many of the previous characters. Soulmate, despite its cheesy title, also gets a 3-star rating because there was more suspense and the vampire in this story actually seemed like he could have been centuries-old but trapped in a teenager's body. I think the biggest flaw of most YA vampire novels (not that I've read a lot) is that the vampires who've lived for ages but look like teenagers still act like teenagers--no adult desires or wisdom or sense of responsibility. You'd think living over a hundred years would give them enough sense to steer clear of clueless, overly dramatic adolescents. But apparently not.

I can tell this is all leading somewhere and I really like the assembled cast of characters and seeing them start to cross paths with ones I liked before. I need more and I'm frustrated but the stories are fun.

The Nigh World isn't a place. It is a secret society of vampires, witches, werewolves and other creatures of darkness that libve amongst us. They are deadly and irressistable to humans. your English teacher could be one and so could your boyfriend.

The Night World law says it is ok to hunt humans, it is okay to toy with their hearts, it is even okay to kill them. There are only two things you can't do with them.

1) Never let them find out the Night World exists.
2) Never let fall in love with one of them

There are stories about what happens when the rules get broken.

Dark Angel: Gillian Lennox's life has been nothing further than boring until one evening in the icy Pennslyvanian wilderness where she hears a scream, thinking it is a child she goes to save only to find her own death at handy. There she dies but then she is brought back by a blonde, violet eyed guy who claims to be an Angel and asks her if she truly wants to leave her life behind?
Gillian then agrees to come back but is even more shocked when the boy follows her and tells her he is her guardian angel and whispers her to the secret of popularity and the way to make her longtime crush David Blackburn to notice her. But then there is this freaky place he tells her about and the creepy, scary club he takes her to where he tells he is her soulmate even though David is her real soulmate.

The Chosen: Rashel Jordan is the most feared vampire hunter of the world of vampires. They call her 'The Cat' and had even offered her rewards but all of that doesn't mean anything to her. She is looking for the red-haired man who once killed her mother when she was 5 and taken her little friend Timmy. Then, she rescues Daphne Childs from a group of vampires who want to take her to the slave trade and there starts the trouble when she sees john Quin the dark, mysterious and most feared vampire plus a heir to the Redferns. The first ever vampires. But, worst of all he happens to be her solmate but that doesn't mean he is any different from the other blood-sucking monsters and she even hates his desire for blood. The 2 of them will kill each to have the fun of it but it seems like doings aren't as easy as sayings.

Soulmate: Hannah Snow's life was perfect, good grades, good friends and looks until the notes in her own handwriting she can't remember writing and nightmares started. Notes like 'He is coming' or ' Do Not Throw This Note Away' etc. Hannah thinks she is going crazy until her phychiatrist hypnotises her and she is gone into a life of a girl who looks the same as her buut is called 'Hana Of The Three Rivers' and the stranger who once took her life away. Further more there comes the raven haired girl called Maya who warns Hannah over and over through lifetimes and this time she will do the most dangerous and selfish thing she should have done ages ago and if Thierry, the stranger doesn't get to her earlier it might be the end of their love.

Night World, No. 2

Dark Angel
Rating: ★★★☆☆
Plot Synopsis: Gillian is saved from drowning by her guardian angel. Only visible to Gillian, Angel will fulfill her heart's every desire. But when Angel starts making strange and sinister requests, Gillian must question who he is and where he came from.
Review: To be perfectly honest, Dark Angel is my least favourite instalment in the series so far. I had issues with some of the writing, mostly just the cliched similes; and at times, I couldn't get into the story. I finished it, which is good, and I enjoyed more toward the end, which is also good.

The Chosen
Rating: ★★★☆☆
Plot Synopsis: Armed with a wooden stake, martial arts, and the will to resist a vampire's mind control, Rashel struggles to avenge her mother's death…. Then she meets Quinn, her soulmate, who is part of the world she has vowed to destroy.
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed The Chosen: it added more depth into the Night World. And I liked Rashel: she was badass. And there was more that actually happened than what the plot synopsis mentions; it was certainly full of surprises; and I'm hoping the next story will be just as good, or even better. Maybe.

Soulmate
Rating: ★★★☆☆
Plot Synopsis: Hannah receives notes warning her of incredible danger…. But if death is her destiny, is the Lord of the Night World's love strong enough to save her?
Review: Review to come

A collection of three books set in the Night World--the home of vampires, werewolves, and witches. Their rules are strict: fall in love with a human and break all of them.

Dark Angel: Gillian is saved from drowning by her guardian angel, someone only she can see and hear. He wants to help her become the person she's always wanted to be: popular, noticeable, likable. Most importantly she wants to attract the attention of the boy she's had a crush on ever since she started noticing boys. But then Angel starts making strange requests, making Gillian question what he really wants.

The Chosen: After her mother is killed by a vampire, Rashel grows up to become a vampire hunter. She's one of the best there is. Every other vampire hunter seems to have heard of the Cat. But then she meets Quinn, a vampire she can't seem to kill. He's part of the world she's vowed to destroy, but he's also her soulmate.

Soulmate: Hannah's destiny has been tied to the Lord of the Night World for a long time--centuries even, through the magic of reincarnation. Now she's receiving notes warning her to stay away, but he is persistent.

This collection isn't as good as the first Night World collection. I still couldn't put it down, but the stories weren't as moving as the first three. Still if you enjoy the Night World books, this is just more of the same.

Dark Angel: This is one of my favorite books in the series. The plot twisted and left the reader in shock at the end. I think so many can relate to Gillian. She was basically invisible to the world until an angel came to bring out her beauty and give her an admirable personality. Through this she finds that her soul mate is her crush. She also finds herself. I was so happy at the end when Thomas was forgiven so he could forgive himself.

The Chosen: You can't help but admire Rashel for being so independent, tough, and wise. She's basically my favorite aside from Gillian in the series. She isn't all "boohoo" all the time like most of the female characters in these books. I also can't help but fall in love with Quinn's bad boy exterior and love his aching interior. I love his and Rashel's love/hate/confused relationship.

Soulmate: I just love the whole Hellewise & Maya story to explain the creation of vamps. Very clever. However I did not like how this story was very Eleana & Stefan from Vampire Diaries. Don't get me wrong, I loved this. I love how Thierry had to keep searching for Hannah everytime she died and how Maya normally causes her death. But it's very very similar to Eleana and Stefan. I love Thierry's character. I want to cuddle the eff out of him.
Also, I like how Smith is bringing previous charcters together. clever clever

I liked these stories. What? I don't feel the need to justify it. They're fun YA paranormals, ludicrous, better-written than most. Sometimes you need that. Wine, pizza, L.J. Smith - if they don't make life better they at least make it tolerable.

After reading the first Night World book, I got curious about where the series was going, so I picked up the next book. As the stories progress, they seem to get better and better. I found this volume of stories much better than the last volume. It revolves around the "soulmate principal" which means that every character ends up finding his or her soulmate.
Dark Angel- Gillian was an easy character to relate to and the true identity of her "angel" was a fascinating discovery. Another one of L.J Smith's races comes into play, the "lost witches" and I think it's a really good concept. I was a bit disappointed that Gillian's soul mate was the most popular boy in her class- I wanted something with more substance.
The Chosen- this is my favourite story yet, despite it also, in my opinion, being the scariest. Rashel sees her mother and best friend Timmy killed by a vampire when she's five years old. She then becomes a vampire hunter in revenge. She and Quinn (her vampire soulmate) have an interesting relationship and I love how the book ends too.
Soulmate- a bit frustrating because the main character is a little slow at catching on that Maya is evil. This story goes right back to Night World legends that are mentioned in each story. The "old soul" idea is again, really good, but the story seems to go on that little bit too long. It was nice to see some old faces introduces as Circle Daybreak, a group whose mission is to promote peace among all species.
I'll definitely be buying the next book because I'm desperate to find out how the series will develop.
Read this book if you love the paranormal romance genre and if you love Twilght then this is so much better.

This is obviously written for teenagers, but it's not bad for all that. In fact, I rather enjoyed it, overall. At least the author provides a reason for all 'made' (lamia, hereditary vampires, are another matter) vampires being teenagers—apparently, the process of transformation will kill anyone older than nineteen.

The only real problem I have with the book, that's inserted into all three stories, is the rather saccharine "soulmate' principle; the idea that everyone in the world has one perfect match that he or she can be happy with in this lifetime and the next and the next, in once case at least. Strikes me as a raw deal for some, but I suppose that's life, or unlife as the case may be. It wouldn't be quite so bad were it not a fundamental principle of Smith's world, one that is now, according to some, trying to change the very way the Night World and the (day world?) human world interact. The idea that love conquers all is, I suppose, too much, in this incarnation, anyway, for a doddering old cynic like me to buy.

But odds are, when I was a teenager I would have loved—scratch that, as a teenager, I would have been profoundly depressed by it. But that's another story.

As I said before, I really don't like these covers but after reading the first book in the series I just had to read this one. I mean HAD to. I was/am in love with these books. They portrayed exactly what I wanted in a book at the time. Paranormal romance, a little action, and most importantly, a storyline that actually moves *cough* unlike Twilight *cough*.

At the time they were perfect for me. And at the time I really didn't have an eye for detail. I thought 'These stories are just flawless. Why can't all books be like this?'. Well looking back, it's a good thing I didn't get my wish cause if I did, all books would be fairly repetitive. Don't get me wrong, I love htese books but by the time you get to the second book of the same thing, it gets boring.

All and all I love these books anyways and I highly recomend you read the books especially if you're jus getting serious with reading and you have nothing to read. They are a great starting point and don't be daunted by their length, because it's like you're reading three books, but you paid for one :).

So far, Night World is my favorite L.J. Smith series, because it is the most cracktastic. It is full of the kinds of stuff your sixteen-year-old id comes up with and incorporates into your private vast crossover-ridden original fiction playground. (Everybody mashes up all their favorite characters and tropes into a personal fantasy playground when they're sixteen, right? Right? Guys?) It has a secret history of the world, in which there is a Night World of witches, vampires, and shapeshifters, who are now trying to bring on the apocalypse, opposed only by an idealistic group of humans, witches, vampires, and shapeshifters with a nifty cool name (Circle Daybreak), and also there are soulmate bonds, reincarnation, and, lately, dragons. Sadly I am not as keen on soulmate bonds now as I was when I was sixteen, but L.J. Smith still is. Also, she is far too fond of vampires (boring!) and not fond enough of dragons (BEST THING EVER!), but no one is perfect.

I really like the format of the smaller stories. You get to know each of the characters intimately, knowing their background and paranormal history. Some creatures are born as such and some are created, making each an individual with original thought processes.

And just when you believe the book is about to end with yet another three stories completed, the author starts corralling them all together in the same place and time to form a team of Night Worlders who will attempt to save us all - adding yet another dimension to the story telling.

Definitely a must read!

This book has three short stories that are all set in this interesting supernatural world. It was not what I was not expecting it to be so modern because it was written before I was born.
My favorite story in this book has to be the second one, of course the vampire story. Although there are all types of Supernatural creatures in each each story, each story tended to surround one type of supernatural being.
The characters were all different, with different strengths and different weaknesses.
Overall I feel that I should give the other voice and try as well!

DARK ANGEL
I don't have much to say about Dark Angel. It doesn't follow the usual plot sequence for the Night World books, which can be a pro. That also threw me off when I read it for the first time (and every subsequent re-read, because I somehow always forget what's going to happen). The MC takes very little initiative until the last few chapters of the book, and until that point, she lets herself be guided (read: bossed around) by a guy she calls Angel. So meh.

THE CHOSEN
Rashel is a breath of fresh air after our girl from the last book. In fact, she's one of my favourite heroines from this series. She's a vampire hunter and even when she meets her soulmate (get this, he's a vampire) she says "too bad" and goes off to stake more vampires. I quite enjoyed this book since for a change, there was a taste of female empowerment and not just kissing and fainting and vampires being like "look at my fangs."

SOULMATE
I have no clue how factually accurate Soulmate is, since we get to go back in time to Hannah's first life as a ... cavewoman? IDK. When she meets and falls in love with one of the first vampires. Then he kills her. Anyway. This story is pretty interesting since again, not just love but more Hannah doing her thing. A lot of *convenient* plot moments though, let me tell you.

Night World Volume 2 by L.J. Smith

Fourth, fifth, and sixth in the Night World series

3.75 stars

I haven’t written a review in forever. OK, maybe not forever, but it was since Friday or Thursday… I lost track of my dates. Night World Volume 2 is a collection of the fourth, fifth, and sixth novels in the Night World series. The first (or fourth) novel is Dark Angel. Dark Angel follows Gillian who dies and is saved by an angel. When the angel starts to make requests that turn violent she begins to question if he is an angel. The next novel is The Chosen, which follows Rashel. Rashel is a vampire hunter who can resist mind control and ends up meeting her soulmate, Quinn, a vampire while on a hunt. The last (sixth) novel in the collection is Soulmate. Soulmate is about Hannah who has dreams of an apocalypse and learns that she is the Lord of the Night World’s soulmate. This collection was a thousand times better than the first one. Even though I enjoyed the first one I didn’t love it. These three stories were just a lot more interesting and held my attention more than the first Night World novels.

Book Four- Dark Angel

3.5 stars

*Read the summary for a refreshed memory*

The main female character is Gillian. Gillian’s story consists of her struggle for wanting to be seen and heard. Gillian is very small for her age and people have always thought of her as a kid and when she dies and the angel offers her a chance to be heard she takes it. Gillian was a relatable heroine. I think almost everyone teenage girl has felt like she wasn’t being heard or seen by her peers. I’ve felt that way a time or two and I guess that’s why I could somewhat relate to her, but I think some of the stuff she did was way to over the top and made me shake my head at her.

Kick-Butt Heroine Scale: 4

The main male character is David. David is really nothing special, but he isn’t a complete jerk. In my opinion he didn’t really need to be in the novel. I thought he was just thrown into the novel because a main part of the Night World series is soulmates, but I don’t think he needed to be Gillian’s soulmate. I think I would’ve liked it if Gillian had stayed single.

Swoon Worthy Scale: 2.5

The Villain- The villain is Angel or at least that’s what he tells Gillian to call him. Angel is a good villain because he had depth. Towards the end we got to learn about him and I just wish he would’ve gotten more spotlight than David.

Villain Scale: 4

Character Scale: 3.75

Final Thoughts: Dark Angel is probably the most relatable novels of the Night World series and I really liked it. I sped through it and was engrossed in Gillian’s voice. I want more background on Gillian’s witch heritage though. I feel like it was just mentioned and brought up, but not really dug into.

Book Five- The Chosen

4 stars

The main female character is Rashel. Rashel is probably one of my favorite heroines in the Night World series. I just really liked her and enjoyed her story. I didn’t want to talk about her, but I feel like I want to just say one thing or two. Rashel is the most feared vampire hunter and has been nicknamed ‘The Cat’. Rashel can kick butt whether it’s vampire or human. She’s one girl you don’t want to mess with.

Kick-Butt Heroine Sale: 4.5

The main male character is Quinn. He’s one of the first vampires ever, which means he wasn’t born a vampire, but turned. I liked Quinn and thought he was pretty cool. I don’t really swoon over these males in this collection, but Quinn is one of my favorites.

Swoon Worthy Scale: 3.75
The Villain- A man whose name I forgot, but I do remember that he killed two people close to Rashel (not saying who) which made her become a hunter.

Villain Scale: 3.25

Character Scale: 4

Final Thoughts
: I really liked The Chosen. I think it was my favorite read of the three.

Book Six- Soulmate

3.75 stars

The main female character is Hannah. Hannah has a pretty much perfect life and then she started to have nightmares and write notes she had no recollection of writing. Hannah was a good character, but she wasn’t an amazing one and to be honest she never stuck in my mind and I forgot about her while reading Thierry’s POV.
Kick-Butt Heroine Scale: 3

The main male character is Thierry. Thierry is so cool. He was definitely my favorite male of the three stories and he was definitely an interesting character.

Swoon Worthy Scale: 4.25

The Villain- Maya… I don’t like her and that action scene at the end wasn’t that bad. It was pretty interesting.
Villain Scale: 4

Character Scale: 3.75

Final Thoughts
: I really liked the story. It was mainly about reincarnation and I thought it was a really good story. This story seemed to really start to set the tone and show that something bigger was about to happen than people just finding soulmates. I think that’s what I liked most about it. The story had a purpose and it wasn’t just a story.

Night World Volume 2 was a lot better than the first and if you didn’t love the first I recommend giving this one a chance.

Cover Thoughts: This is my favorite cover of the three. I love the blue coloring and black together. The girl looks so kick-butt (I’m pretty sure it’s Rashel) and it’s like she’s looking into my soul, but it’s not a terrifying or creepy feeling like some covers are.

He makes her the most desired girl in the school and gives her the boyfriend she has always dreamed of having. Everything is going great until Angel starts making strange requests and Gillian realizes she is hurting people by doing what he says.

Book Two: The Chosen

And I like the part that He admit that he have to apologize to some of the guys in his familie.. about soulmates and stuff... haha

Dark Angel - This 1st story was very intriguing. I liked Angel and everything about him .. his aura, his personality. I even liked how he managed to trick Gillian ... even though maybe I'm not supposed to lol. David I didn't really like but that was just because he didn't notice Gillian until she looked like a slut 8-) .. typical guy. Overall, story was good though.

The Chosen - Amazing story! I liked both of their main characters ... Rashel and Quinn. Great personalities and I liked their reluctance. Rashel's point of view was good because it wasn't focussed completely on the bond and yet she gave in to it when the time came. Even though I never liked Quinn in Daughters Of Darkness, I have officially changed my opinion. I like him and I like the fact that neither character became 'soppy' lol.

Soulmate - Old Souls are epic! It would be sooo cool to remember past lives lol. Characters again were great. I liked Maya's determination ... (it's funny how I always seem to find an appreciation for the bad guys lol). It was sad to watch Hannah and Theirry want to make their way toward each other. I enjoyed the get togethor of all the previous characters. I got to see Ash again :) ... and I like his development ... he still loves Mary-Lynette and he still wishes to see her but he seems to have a little more hope after seeing Hannah which I liked.

Overall I think I have to say that Volume 2 didn't ruin the soulmate concept after all. There seems to be a alternative motive in all this and I can't wait for it to develop. The stories have steered away from the typical and have really made an impression. Unlike the previous review ... I can't wait for Volume 3 ... I think it will really proove to be the best of them all.

The second omnibus volume to L.J. Smith’s popular Night World Series does not disappoint. Rather, it surpassed all of my expectations and reminded me why I will, forever, read everything and anything published by Ms. Smith. This set of stories contains the usual elements of a L.J. Smith story that we have all come to know and love-the stories are intriguing, fast paced, and all around captivating; the characters are sexy, dangerous, witty, and well-rounded; and the universe is more developed and intriguing than ever before. The romances, well, let’s just say are sinfully delicious and entirely forbidden-and no one is safe. In this volume we also learn more about the origins of Ms. Smith’s unique world-from the origin of her mythological creatures to the history of her extraordinary, enchanting world and those who inhabit it. Dark Angel, the first book in this volume, will leave you awestruck and guessing until the very end. The Chosen, which contains one of Ms. Smith’s strongest characters, Rashel, will pull at your heart-strings and leave you distraught for the character’s fate, while also showing you that Ms. Smith does far more than tell a good love story. Finally, Soulmate, arguably the best story in the series, will show you that the Night World Series, five books in, can still hold its weight-and believe me, it only gets better from here.

Oh, dear god. I picked this book up at my local library because it was free. Now, I know why. I have read some spectacular YA fiction - The Apothecary comes to mind - but this is so NOT in that category. I honestly do not know why I kept reading this thing, let alone finished it. Maybe it was morbid hope that the monsters would actually remember what they were and start putting an end to all this useless angst instead of falling into the unexplicable and sudden Wuv, Twoo Wuv of the One True Soulmate.

There were a few other things that irritated me about these novels but they may just be useless nitpicking on my part. For example, there was one scene where the vampire rested his fangs on his lower lip. This is a pet peeve of mine because it means there must be a majority of vampires in the world with severe overbites, considering how many of them seem to rest their fangs on their lower lips in so many stories.

So in the end, this compilation was so not my cup of tea. I don't know if that means I'm not a romantic or if I just like my characters to actually get to know each other before claiming they've found anything, much less the 'true love of a soulmate.'

Dark Angel: I really like this plot idea. I've never read a book about an "angel" before. I liked Gary as a character, but he would have been cooler if her were more sinister and hadnt given up so easily. The characters are really cool too!
The Chosen: I love Quinn! Holy crap he is awesome. I was angry at him when he bit her, because that is her nightmare. I think it was out of character for Rashel to not care so much, but I guess the Soulmate principle changed things... I also liked how Tommy came back. Sucks what actually happened to him though. Maybe it would have been better if he had died.

Soulmate: This is a great story that shows that love can outlast time. Thierry seemed to be a guy who needed complete control, and to be so controlled by his love for a girl who he has killed dozens of times over his like seems a little strange, but I loved him for it! No matter how much time passed, he still loved her. I like how Hannah's birthmak was from him.
