Lucy Rose #4

Lucy Rose: Working Myself to Pieces and Bits

Rate this book
I'M LUCY ROSE and here's the thing about I am lucky in them. And here's the thing about sometimes they are in need, indeed, especially when one of them buys a plumbing store and needs to diva it up so it can turn into a bakery. That is one job that takes work and costs plenty, and even 72 or more McBees couldn't get that job done by themselves. But between all the stuff you have to do in fourth and my bingo-calling and keeping track of my gigantic vocabulary and trying to keep away from the word thief Ashley and trying to stop the worst rumor you ever heard and dreaming up a money-making scheme that doesn't cost us money and plus having to build that bakery, I am working myself to pieces and bits. I would say most people would be so beat tired they'd collapse on the spot, but here's what I say to I am one busy bee who loves my friends.

I liked this Lucy Rose book just as much as the other two I read, but my son definitely didn't, claiming it was light on both action and palindromes. (I'd add that there are lots of girly details about the renovation and decorating of Mrs. McBee's new bakery, which I enjoyed, but I can see why he didn't.)

Lucy Rose is a hoot, from her red boots to the bandana on her head. In this book, you will learn about her trials with the word-stealing, rumor-starting, liar Ashley and revenge; about how Lucy Rose and Jonique and others help the McBees open a bakery; about Lucy Rose's ideas for money-making and helping someone with Alzheimer's disease; and about friendship. Also, Lucy Rose keeps up with the WOTD (word of the day), palindromes, and her self-created words. Written as journal entries, the reader always knows Lucy Rose's opinions and poor fashion choices.

Lucy Rose's world isn't perfect. Her parents are divorced and she doesn't have the things Ashley owns, but both of her parents love her and spend time with her, her grandparents are attentive, and she has the camaraderie of Jonique and Melonhead--and her own slightly-off-balance view of the world.

This book is a trip worth taking.

I liked the story a lot, but I think the author may have gotten carried away with the diary writing style, to the point where many passages were very difficult to follow. There were a great deal of characters that didn't have enough depth to follow and remember, so when they reappeared it was hard to keep track of who was who. I'd be interested in seeing earlier books in the series to see if having some prerequisite knowledge helps with following the writing style.

This was not my favorite Lucy Rose book, but I'm still a huge fan of this character!
