The Chronicles of Parthalan #3

Rise of the Deva'shi: A Chronicle of Parthalan

Rate this book
A stolen girl. A legendary champion. A plan that might destroy Parthalan once and for all…

Aeolmar, First Hunter of Parthalan, leads a solitary life. Having long since abandoned his quest to kill Mersgoth—the demon that murdered his family—Aeolmar moves through his days with cold efficiency. Everything changes when he leads a training mission in Brennus, where he’s attacked by Mersgoth himself, and saved by an unlikely heroine.

Latera, first born and heir to Gannera’s throne, is kidnapped and left for dead in Parthalan’s vast forests. A lone human amongst Parthalan’s fae, she makes a home in Brennus, and lives a quiet life—until she finds herself defending a wounded First Hunter from a clutch of demons.

Back in Parthalan, Harek warns Asherah of something called the deva’shi—a warrior loyal only to the demon lord, Asgeloth. Both Aeolmar and Latera suspect that there is more to this deva’shi than what Harek has told them, but before they can learn the truth, Parthalan’s borders are attacked. Will Aeolmar and Latera be able to stop the deva’shi in time, or is it a distraction to hide Harek’s true plans?

Let me start by saying I really enjoy this book, and I loved how the author included the human world this time . This book kept me up most nights reading later than I should have been up, finally getting closure on the storyline set up by the first two books . Although some parts are predictable there is still alot that will keep you guessing till the end.

Oh, how I’ve missed the epic world that is Parthalan… Full of rich characters, bad ass heroines (and heroes), a detailed world, and in Rise of the Deva’shi, the sweetest happily-ever-after I’ve ever read. Years ago, this series rekindled my love for fantasy, so it will always be very special to me.

Rise of the Deva’shi is my favorite installment of this book series, the Chronicles of Parthalan. It’s strong on romance, but also has an in-depth plot rich with magic and adventure that propels the story forward. This is one of those books that you sit down to read and lose half your day or more, because you just have to know what’s going to happen next–-or you just really want to pretend your Latera rolling around in the tall grass with Aeolmar. ;) I won’t say which category I fall in.

I received Rise of the Deva'shi through GoodReads "First Reads". Thank you SO much Jennifer, and for signing it for me! *big grin*

I normally don't read this genre (Fantasy), which is exactly why I wanted to read it. (Now I know I should read it more often)

What a wonderful book!! I definitely enjoyed everything about it, I'd even give it more than 5 stars. It has everything you could want in one book - action, suspense, romance, etc., etc. The pace is great, as is the character development.

... the only disappointment is I don't think Jennifer has another novel out *yet?*.

This book takes us into a wondrous world of fantasy and romance – demons, faeries, and a pair of fearless fighters travelling through space and time. It’s an ideal read for anyone who just wants to escape from dreary reality for a while and to start believing in fairy tales again.
At some points it tends to get a bit lengthy, but overall it’s a very lively tale full of deep feelings and good old-fashioned values like love and friendship and loyalty. The heroes, Latera and Aeolmar, are loveable characters who really make us feel with them, and the story is told in a clever and unconventional way. High entertainment value throughout!

I regret the impulse that led me to buy this 513 page pricey paperback book. It had very few reviews, I took a chance, and can't believe I actually finished it.

The story itelf could be interesting if it was written in about 200 pages. Young princess whisked away from her homeland by sorcery and lands in Parthalan, the land of the fey. First a stablehand at an inn, she becomes the best of the best as a Demon Hunter during her six years in Parthalan. She also earns the devotion of the First Hunter, who is #3 in the realm. The tale is told in the first person and for some reason Latera insists on calling him First Hunter half of the time and by his name, Aeolmar at others.

The telling of the story is incredibly simplistic, no surprises, and everything just seems to turn out nice and safe. The real negative for me was that I read nearly 300 pages of gushing love talk between Latera and Aeolmar. Not racy talk, just mushy over and over. They mooned over each other in private and in public as well, everyone seemed to be totally comfortable with it (well, except a couple), he spent days and nights in her room which appeared to be just fine with the Queen, the other hunters and everyone else. When she was poisoned and nearly died it was Aeolmar of course who nursed her back to health day and night including sleeping naked (and chaste at the time) with her to keep her warm. I like romances, but this was like two fifteen year olds besotted with each other. It just made no sense that he was a 150 year old Fey warrior leader and she, although young, was their greatest Demon Hunter.

At about page 300 I decided I could not read any more of this, but would skim to the end so I could review the book. I did skim a bit until I saw that Latera had ended up back in her original realm, and although she had grown up in faery and was an adult now, she had only been gone four days in their time. The story got a bit interesting then since Aeolmar was out of the picture and she had to deal with her parents and a search to find out how to get back to Parathalan. The history of her family and what led up to her original disappearance was interesting, but of course she found her way back to Aeolmar and the mushy stuff began all over again. Amid all this there is an impending battle and Latera finds out there is a traitor in the kingdom. The traitor was the most logical guy of course so not much mystery there. There is no way I would have read more than 100 pages of this book if I hadn't paid twice what I normally pay for a paperback and was determined to finish it.

Rise of the Deva'shi is an epic fantasy romance written by Jennifer Allis Provost. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, from page one to last, and really hope that this isn't the end of the Chronicles of Parthalan. I am really interested in hearing the next story!

The released story before this is "Heir to the Sun", so if you haven't read it yet, I encourage you to check it out. Also an excellent book.

Princess Latera is whisked away to a foreign land via magic, where she becomes lost in the realm of Faerie. She goes from being an Heir to her Father's kingdom, to a simple stable girl; living in a barn for six years. Then one day, the First Hunter of Parthalan requests her to come with him to care for their horses. This sets off a series of events that lead her to her destiny...

Fully engrossing, romantic, and suspenseful. 5 stars all the way!

An interesting follow-up to the virgin queen, this one isn’t so much about Ashera as it is about the First Hunter and his love story. It has a rich story line and connects the human realm to Parthalan. Harek is still plotting and whenever the story line cuts away from the romance ( little as it does), the world building and character development are strong, well-written and fast paced. Latera is another worthy heroine in this series about a great heroine-queen and accomplishes a multitude of feats worthy of the love interest of the First Hunter.

I recommend this book highly to all who love strong women, great characters, magic, great world building and romance to boot.

Exccellant third book. The First Hunter, Aeolmar, meets Latera at a stable and hires her to take care of their horses while on a test of stealth. She uses his sword to kill two demons while he was sleeping and he decides that she would be a good huntress. So begins the story of Aeolmar and Latera. She learns to fight and is a natural at it. Aeolmar is attracted to Latera and while they are protecting the queen and her borders from the demons, they are trying to figure who the Deva'shi is and where it is coming from. This story is full of danger, drama, sweet interactions, and an ending that reveals a traitor. I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to the next.

Love and Loss

Aoelmar meets a beautiful young woman and falls for her immediately. An attack by demons reveals she has latent abilities as a hunter.
The third in this series continues the scheming behind the throne and the threat from the demons. It is also a love story, as were the first two books.
A fascinating series, with a brilliantly constructed world, and an admirable and endearing cast of characters. Oddly, not as well edited, this is still compelling and enjoyable.

I am loving this series. I love the way the author writes and the complexity of the plot. You will fall in love with the characters and feel their pain. This is probably my favourite so far in the series, it's focus is on the First Hunter and his love interest and the challenges they face along the way.

Rise of the Deva'shi tells the story of Latera a princess who is kidnapped to the realm of Faerie. She escapes her captors and starts her life anew as a humble horse groomer at a small village inn. One day Aeolmar the First Hunter of Parthalan comes through on a training exercise and asks for Latera to accompany him and his men to the forest so she can care for their horses while they train. During the training there is a demon ambush and Aeolmar is injured fairly badly. He is returned to camp unconscious while his men go to hunt the vile demons that attacked them. When the men leave demons attack again leaving only Latera to defend Aeolmar and herself. She manages to kill two demons and injure the third when Aeolmar wakes up and finishes it off. This being a totally unheard of feat for someone who has absolutely no combat training Latera is invited back to the castle to train to become a huntress.

This begins the story of a growing affection between Aeolmar and Latera as well as a Parthalan being in danger from increased demonic activity that must be stopped. Along the way Latera learns the truth about her past and why mysterious things keep happening to her in the land of Faerie.

Overall the book was good. The story was entertaining for the most part and the characters were well written and engaging. The biggest drawback to me was the romance aspect of the book. I don't mind their being romance in books that I read, but this had a bit to much for my taste. If you enjoy stories of love with fantastical elements then this book is for you, and honestly it was well written enough that if there is another book in the series I will check it out for sure.

I am in love with this book. I have never read a book in the fantasy genre but Allis Provost has peaked my interest to try another book. I hope other fantasy books live up to this one. This book contained war, action, fictional history, superb character development, suspense, and passion. I very much felt for the characters in the situations they were put into. My favorite aspect of the book is way I was put into the position to witness the passionate relationship between the two main characters. The way the characters spoke and interacted with one another was far above romance and fully expressed passion. Thank you to the author for choosing me to be a first reader. I hope to see another book from you!

This book was great, and gradually went downhill. I love the mushy gushy romance, but by the one-hundred and fiftieth page of the same two people confessing their love for each other, even I start to feel sick and annoyed! The beginning was great! It was well paced, interesting, and I really enjoyed it. By the 40% through-it mark on my Kindle I wanted to shoot myself. When their was action it was well described and interesting. But mostly it was romance and mushy and more mushy. Finally I gave up. I read this book for almost two weeks and couldn't get past the 40%! (I usually finish books in four days tops!) I finally just put it down. I do not plan to finish this one. But for you strong reading warriors that will attempt to brave this unfinishable book-Good trucking Luck!

What an amazing ride this story gave me from beginning to end. I became fully engrossed in the plot and characters. Latera showed so much courage and strength despite all that she faced. Aeolmar was just perfect for her. The secondary characters were enjoyable as well. The world building was amazing. This author is very talented and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future. Another book for my keeper shelf.
