I'm rating this keeping in mind that I'm not the target audience. It had some really cool watercolor pictures of dragons which were a nice touch.

This award-winning book by calligraphic artist and naturalist Yvonne Palka tells the fantasy tale of a human brother and sister who discover a family of dragons newly awakened from beneath the sands of their family's favorite vacation spot on a Pacific Northwest beach. Influential but never preachy, the story celebrates the heart of family, friendship, and dealing with difficult characters. The fantasy magic that visits both human and dragon characters expands by way of the author's beautiful calligraphy illustrations. In lyrical, sweeping strokes, dragons fly and sometimes fight. On other pages readers will delight in spare and playful images of beach camping and marine life and other wildlife as it can be experienced on the real Shi Shi Beach in Washington State. The book includes informative short essays on Washington State wildlife, dragon lore, and sumi-e (Asian brush painting).

Fun and fantastic children's story complete with Sumi-e paintings (by the author/illustrator) of the mythic dragons of Shi Shi (pronounced Shy Shy) beach in Washington state. Lovely.

Read this book aloud with my 8 year old granddaughter. She loved it.
