Just when disgraced Atlanta cop-turned-private eye Marcus Rydell prepares to eat his gun, a kid in trouble, a call to duty, and a dirty blonde named Kat Holley stop him cold.

Kat pulls Marcus from his suicidal depression and his soon-to-be demolished apartment building—only to make him face his past. She leads him on a deadly hunt deep into the blackest forest in the Red Earth State. Near the Georgia-Tennessee border in the breathtaking Blue Ridge countryside, the pair watch a safe haven become their death trap.

They seek to destroy a local legend, a cave-dwelling ex-marine and murderer, a monster whose instincts and military training have allowed him to survive in the wilderness for four years, eluding the Feds as well as Atlanta PD. When the hunters become the hunted, they must duel with this psychotic deviant.

Master of suspense and bone-chilling terror, Robert W. Walker, BS and MS in English Education, Northwestern University, has penned 44 novels and has taught language and writing for over 25 years. Showing no signs of slowing down, he is currently juggling not one but three new series ideas, and has completed a film script and a TV treatment. Having grown up in Chicago and having been born in the shadow of the Shiloh battlefield, near Corinth, Mississippi, Walker has two writing traditions to uphold--the Windy City one and the Southern one--all of which makes him uniquely suited to write City for Ransom and its sequels, Shadows in White City and City of the Absent. His Dead On will be published in July 2009. Walker is currently working on a new romantic-suspense-historical-mainstream novel, titled Children of Salem. In 2003 and 2004 Walker saw an unprecedented seven novels released on the "unsuspecting public," as he puts it. Final Edge, Grave Instinct, and Absolute Instinct were published in 2004. City of the Absent debuted in 2008 from Avon. Walker lives in Charleston, West Virginia.

1408 Peachtree. Marcus Theodore Rydell (PI, former Atlanta PD Detective, USMC, # 48-B) barged through the # 58-B door.
Kim (14) an oriental female had a hammer in her hand. Don Quinn (52) lying on the floor in a pool of blood was defiantly dead.
She was part of a child sex ring.
The Puerto Rican superintendent had called the cops.
Dr. Katrina “Kat” Holley (Atlanta Memorial intern) pronounced him dead.

Kim could be charged with murder.
Detective Denny Hodges (Atlanta PD), & Detective Janine Dobbins (Atlanta PD) arrived at the crime scene.
Detective John “Atlanta Jack” Thomas (JT, Atlanta PD) spoke with Marcs also.
O’Dule’s bar/ bistro. Marcos had asked Dr. Holley to join him.
Dr. Mallory showed up instead. 1 & the same person.
Mario (Irish-Italian bartender) got their drinks.
She made him an offer he dared not refuse.
Lawrence Milton (stock broker) decompose/burned body was found hanging from a tree.
Dr. Holley hid Mrs. Nora Miersky (mom) & the children Jenny Miersky (daughter/sister), & Stan Miersky (10, son/brother) behind the trap door.
They were to stay hidden until Marcus or Dr. Holley came back to get them.
Deacon Carl Schramick (Danny/Jenny’s stepfather, sells drywall) had gone for help.
Iden “Big Head” Cantu was keeping an eye on them.

What did Marcos do to Paco (German Shepherd)?
Tim Grimes had been dumped in a boat & lit on fire with an accelerant.
Who will survive & who might get killed?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written crime thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great crime thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

This book was wonderful. I enjoyed every bit of it. It was a great story with so much action. I could feel the emotions running high throughout the entire book. The author was great in describing how the serial killer was feeling and planning his torment. I was impressed with this author and will be looking into more of his books for sure!

Pros:
*Great writing style, very modern and clean.
*The story has an upbeat pace.
*There's plenty of wit to keep it entertaining, and intrigue to keep the pages turning.

Cons:
*The language is very vulgar, I'm sorry to say.

The book kicks off w/ a high octane throttle. Marcus Rydell is about to have a pistol sandwich when a kid in trouble thwarts Marcus from digesting the metallic condiments.

Like a house on fire, Dead On takes off & doesn't burn out until the conclusion, by then you want some more flames coming your way.

Marcus Rydell is a terrific character. A real man w/ genuine issues. No watered down protagonist in this roller coaster thriller! Kudos to Walker for making everything flow like melted butta!

Walker's descriptive expertise is absolutely astonishing! Applause to Walker for accomplishing this skillful talent so darn effortlessly.

This piece of crap was pooped out and smeared onto the pages.

It contains numerous grammatical and spelling errors, some of the most atrocious dialog ever penned, a protagonist with no clear motivations an ingenue that insists she is not an ingenue, and perhaps worst of all, a plot from a later Dean Koontz novel--it even includes a dog.

The very idea that a book like this was published by a real publishing house is ludicrous.

I only grabbed this off of the library's new fiction book as a walk-by, while I was in the library for other business. Now I wish I hadn't.

Although I was engrossed in the suspense of the 2 main characters being stalked by a maniacal killer, I just kept wanting it to be over. I'm a wuss and this was too horrific for me. I do greatly appreciate that the author made this book available as a free download and in gratitude, will make it a point to recommend his works to people who like the genre.

This story was interesting and well told. My problem with it is that is not realistic. The whole idea of the dog (Big/Paco) having a bugging device implanted was somewhat believable. The incredible part was the ability of Marcus to remove the bug, "reprogram" it and then put it back in place all while at a remote "cabin in the woods" of Northern Georgia.

Just my opinion.

This one kept was mentally exhausting. I felt as though I lived thru their tension of hunting and being hunted by a murderer. I was disappointed however, that this wasn't one of the 'Edge' or 'Instinct' series. Hopefully, Walker will write more books for those series.

I loved the story as a whole, but by the end I had mixed feelings about the relationship of the two main characters. Other than that, I thought the book was great.

The plot had potential but this book is riddled with errors and random punctuation. I really do not understand why authors refuse to have someone proof their work.
