aka
Sue-Ellen Welfonder & Allie Mackay

Sue-Ellen MacDuffie was born and raided in Florida. She is a card-carrying Scotophile whose burning wish to make frequent (free) trips to the land of her dreams led her to a twenty year career with the airlines. Bi-lingual, she flew international all those years, working her flights as foreign language speaker. Her flying career allowed her to see the world, but it was always to Scotland that she returned.

Now a full-time writer, she’s quick to admit that she much prefers wielding a pen to pushing tea and coffee. She spent fifteen years living in Europe and used that time to explore as many castle ruins, medieval abbeys, and stone circles as possible. Anything ancient, crumbling, or lichened caught her eye. She makes annual visits to Scotland, insisting they are a necessity as each trip gives her inspiration for new books.

Proud of her own Hebridean ancestry, she belongs to two clan societies: the MacFie Clan Society and the Clan MacAlpine Society. In addition to Scotland, her greatest passions are medieval history, the paranormal, and dogs. She never watches television, loves haggis, and writes at a four-hundred-and-fifty year old desk that once stood in a Bavarian castle.

Sue-Ellen is married and currently resides with her husband and Jack Russell Terrier in Florida. Readers can learn more about her and the world of her books at: www.welfonder.com.

I was afraid I would think Darroc was an ass. But he wasn't! Let me explain ;)

Darroc hates the MacKenzies, they drove them to a godforsaken crappy island. He haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaates them!

Arabella is on of the hated Mackenzies and she is shipwrecked on his island. And this made me all NOOOOO! I was afraid he would be all, haha, I will seduce her, leave her, and then in the end she still would crawl back. And I would be all no!

But instead we have a lovely story about she charms everyone. They get that she is not evil, even if her grandfather did something bad. She starts to fall for Darroc. There is talk about vikings (no more vikings then, but whatever.) The island sounds horrible. There is traces of old magic spun through the story. I liked that.

But of course they wont have it easy. Their families are feuding. He is an ass (but in a good way) and love wins.

I love these MacKenzies! This can be read as a stand alone but if you've read the series, especially the first, Devil In A Kilt, you will appreciate Duncan, Linnet, and Marmaduke's appearances. Arabella is wanting to find her one true love and her father keeps running off all the available men so she takes matters into her own hands. She finds her soul mate in none other than Darroc MacConacher, the chieftain of her families last rival clan. He is determined to bring honor back to his clan and in doing so take down the MacKenzies. Life doesn't always go as planned and oft times takes us down a path we would have thought to have been treacherous but leads to wonders beyond our imagination. This is what happens when Darroc finds Arabella afloat in the sea barely conscious. So starts the adventure. I love all the lore packed into this story. Scotland is full of it and Sue-Ellen does a wonderful job of taking you right smack dab into the middle of medieval Scotland with it's enchanted places, relics, charms, and magical moments. It brought me to tears near the end just feeling the pain that wracked both Arabella and Darroc. The process of them finding their HEA after that emotional ride left me with warm smiles. Anyone brave enough to face Duncan and stand his ground is pretty okay in my book. Darroc, you stole my heart. :)

I was asked to read and review A Highlander’s Temptation by Sue-Ellen Welfonder. The story is set in 14th century Scotland, a time when hostilities were high among the various Highland clans. The heroine of the story is the young and beautiful Arabella MacKenzie, daughter of the chief of clan MacKenzie. While on a sea voyage to a set of islands, Arabella I forced to abandon ship. The following day, she is found offshore of an island owned by the clan MacConacher. Darroc, the hero of the story, is happy to help her, until he learns her name. The MacConachers hate the MacKenzies for atrocities committed against their clan in the past. Unfortunately for Darroc, he falls for the one woman he knows he should hate.

Think of this book as a Scottish rendition of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet- feuding families and a love that seems doomed from the beginning. I enjoyed this book! It was a quick and easy read, and the story kept me interested throughout. There was certainly no shortage of action or drama! This book has a smattering of everything- battles, magic, paranormal activity, and romance. I became very attached to characters, and even caught myself getting a bit misty-eyed at one point in the story.

I particularly enjoyed the interactions between the MacConacher men. Whenever Arabella was around, they had fun picking on Darroc (A lot of that wink-wink-nudge-nudge sort of humor, if you know what I mean!). The crazy old woman who helped around the castle was also very amusing- she was convinced she was helping when often the men had to go behind her and correct the wreckage she was causing! The author did a nice job of developing the characters, even the minor ones who only played supporting roles to the storyline. By doing this, the author develops an entire community of which the reader is able to become a part.

Something that caught my attention was that some of the names were a bit silly in this book. A Viking with the name Olaf Big Nose would certainly not inspire his foes to go running with their tails between their legs! There's also a relic in this story that the clans call the "Thunder Rod". Can you guess what sort of power it has? No? Think hard! Thunder. Rod. Have you got it now? My mind had wandered into that gutter long before they explained the extent of its powers later in the book! I understand the purpose behind the names used, however it was difficult to take them seriously each time they arose in the book.

I wasn't a particularly big fan of the paranormal aspect of the storyline. Essentially, the ghost of a jaded female haunted the castle and enjoyed meddling in the affairs of Darroc and Arabella. However, in the end, her role had absolutely no bearing on the storyline aside from being a relic of a tale they told around the castle about a girl who had been left to die there long ago. I normally enjoy the paranormal aspect of stories, however I think in this situation that the story would not have been any different without it.

I will say I was a bit disappointed towards the end. Clan MacConacher and Olaf Big Nose's warriors headed off to sea battle, and without giving too much away, I would have to say I felt it was incredibly anticlimactic! It almost seemed as if the author rushed towards the end of the book. To remedy this, it's as if she created situations in which everything was able to happen in an expedited manner. That being said, I will say I appreciate her brevity in some cases. I do not feel the need to experience days of wallowing in self-pity when I can just as easily catch the gist from the statement, "He had been miserable for days."

All in all, this was a good book. It didn't take long to read, and didn't have a complex plot. If you're looking for a nice, light romance novel, definitely give this one a try!

Afraid of growing old, never experiencing passion and love, Arabella KacKenzie seeks an adventure. When she confronts her father, the Black Stag of Kintail, Duncan MacKenzie, with her idea, he's dead set against it. But with the help of her mother and dear friend Sir Marmaduke, Duncan is persuaded into letting Arabella have her way. He is for the most part responsible for Arabella's lonely, unmarried state, refusing and scaring off potential suitors.

Now on her adventure out to sea as she heads to a special island, Seal Isle, bequeathed to her by her father as part of her bride price, Arabella runs into the dreaded Black Vikings. A myth most people claim them to be. She remembers seeing the horror as the evil Vikings destroy the merchant cog ship she's on, killing everyone aboard. Yet she finds herself saved by Darroc MacConacher, Laird of the MacConachers of MacConacher Isle.

Darroc MacConacher is set on vengeance against the Mackenzies for their part in the legendary slaughter of his clan many years ago. But when he realizes who the beauty is laying in his bed recovering from her wounds, a battle ignites within himself, for he wants the lass like he’s never wanted one before. She fires his blood, as he fires hers. He wants Arabella, but can he put aside his dislike for the MacKenzies and accept and take the love Arabella offers him?

I very much loved this sweet, and at times haunting tale. There are several things that enhanced this book, making it a pleasure to sink into. Always reading about Duncan and Linnet MacKenzie (Devil in a Kilt) puts a smile on my face. The ever proud, and stubborn it's-my-way-or-the-highway Duncan. Well, when his lovely wife Linnet isn't around, that is, putting him back in his place with her quiet and patient nature. And this one being about Arabella, Duncan's eldest daughter, he and Linnet have a nice role throughout.

And of course, the ever present Devorgilla of Doon. A MacKenzie tale wouldn't be right if the old crone wasn't concocting some magic or other to ensure that love blossoms and blooms as she's tucked away on her little isle looking over those she holds dear.

This installment in the MacKenzies is a true treasure, one that left me with a smile, a warm heart, and a renewal of my desire to visit the faraway land of Scotland. It’s always such a pleasure to be whisked away, and in A Highlander’s Temptation, Ms. Welfonder does it on the turbulent waters surrounding the Hebridean Isles off the coast of Scotland. A delightful and charming romantic tale of the healing power of love!

Seriously ... what was the book about ??
A mythical story ?? Love caused by magic ?? Pirates ??
okay ... I could have skipped all those things , if there had been steady progress of characters in the story ...& On the top of that the writing ....Does she do this intentional , make the reading part for readers so difficult that they lose the interest completely ... My sister had great reviews about this one , she is rarely wrong . Its because of her suggestion I started reading historical romance & loved it ... but for the first time , I disagree with her... I completed the novel , in hope that it will get better... but to my sheer disappointment .. it didn't ... and the last part was so so silly ... that it was the last blow to my head. henceforth I might never read more novels of this author in near future...

Arabella is not like her other sister, who is bold and daring when it comes to men or even going after what she wants. Arabella has more of a gentle nature, compassionate, and seeks to please her parents, whom she loves dearly. But she is desperate to go to a island, which belongs to her, and visit a shrine there so that she can make a wish, a plea to find a man to love and cherish and to have a family with. With a absurdly over protective father, she knows it will be near impossible to find a husband. But then with a verbal battle with her father, she gains permission to go. With four bodyguards, they head out on the sea toward her island. But then a huge storm along with a viking ship tears her ship apart, and she ends up the only survivor and washes up on shore. Then enters the hero, Darroc, who finds this woman, who is pale and injured, and takes her to his clan, and gives her the rest and healing she needs. From the first moment she wakes, there is a chemistry between Darroc and Arabella. Even though Darroc learns that she is the enemy's daughter, he can't deny his feelings for her, and knows that his heart belongs to Arabella from their first meeting and will fight to keep her at his side.

A Highlanders Temptation is a delightful story. I recently read the previous book in the series, which was Arabella's sisters story. And I have had this one on my wish list ever since it became published. So I was super excited when I saw this one was finally available at my local library. So A Highlander's Temptation is a sweet romance, and I read it under two hours (which is a record for me). I still can hardly believe that I could read that much, not skimming, and be so enthralled by this romance. The story begins with seeing Arabella's start and Darroc's start and a bit of a background. But not too much, since it picks up pretty quickly. Soon Arabella is in Darroc's castle, and I was very amused by the beginning of their courting dance. Neither of them admits in the beginning how they feel about each other, but then Darroc just up and kisses her when neither of them expect it, and boy does things heat up. Even though there were only a few bedroom scenes, there was a bit of steam, but not over kill either. There was more of a focus on their relationship. I did feel like there should of been more focus on the relationship more. Most of the story seemed to be Darroc having avoidance issues (which was a bit humorous ), but once he got his butt in gear, their romance hit off and you start to really cheer for this couple. There is a bit of a magical element but not too much at all. Just a very light touch, to add character to the story.

The characters in this story were very riveting. There wasn't anything super complicated to either one of them, in fact in was quite refreshing to have two characters that are more down to earth, and are willing to admit their feelings for each other. There was such a sweet feeling to Arabella and Darroc. Darroc is leader of his clan, and is looking for justice for his clan when they were raided viciously by Arabella's grandfather. Darroc has many leader like attributes. He is confident, commanding, and his people are top priority until he meets Arabella. Arabella, is such a sweet heroine, so infectious you cant help but love her. Even though she isn't as strong willed as is the norm, I found her endearing, and I couldn't help but relate to her quite a bit. Arabella is innocent and strong in her desire to find a loving husband. I enjoyed seeing her growth in this story, and seeing how she gradually learns to fight for the man she loves. Their relationship isn't full of roses and daises of course, there is some conflict, but this romance is a sweet story that you can just relax into.

Overall a extraordinary romance that will pull at your heart strings. Welfonder writes a beautiful highland romance that is a page turner and a story to captivate the heart. AMAZING!!

Ok, I finally finished reading Sue-Ellen Welfonder's A Highlander's Temptation. I had previously read another of her Highlander books and thought it was wonderful (Seducing a Scottish Bride). So, naturally, I was greatly looking forward to reading her new book, A Highlander's Temptation had came out in October 2009, but, sadly, I'm dissapointed with it.

Like all Highlander stories, we usually have a hot-blooded, strong warrior and a beautiful wanting woman who are are from different warring clans. This stands true for this book, which I don't have a problem with. Actually, I found the first half of the book (the book is 375 pages long) great. I thought it was well written and was really liking the characters. The male lead of the book, Derroc is chief of his clan; a clan with a tattered reputation that he wants to fix to no end. His love interest is Lady Arabella, Derroc's enemy's daughter who has washed up on his shore after a horrible ship wreck.

The two naturally fall for one another, but, Derroc, not wanting to get involved with the enemy's daughter, decideds to keep his distance and ignore his desires. Arabella though is a lonely woman having watched her younger sister get wed and now with a baby on the way, and she wants that for herself.

Now, I already said I really enjoyed the first half of the book. After that, I feel as if the author had to push herself to finish the book, which sadens me since I loved her other work. It was as if all of a sudden she thought 'oh wait! I need a problem for my characters' so she threw a problem at them, which they easily succeded. Then it was as if she thought 'oh wait! This is supposed to be a romance, I need to let my characters have sex', to which point I felt as if her characters were a mix of cavemen and five years olds, creating poetry about making love and beautiful vows, but turning around the next secound to say:
man-'you're mine'
woman- 'oh, yes!'
man- 'I take what's mine'
woman- 'yes, please!'

Then of course, things were going too well, and the book wasn't possibly long enough to send it off to the publishers, so the author had to create yet another problem, this time making Derroc have a moment where he thought everything was fake between them , created by a wooden relic he thought magic, making him send Arabella away to her father before deciding, a whole fours day later, to go after her.

Of course, everything ended up fine, just a slight, five minute warring with her hated father before she jumped on board her lover's ship and sailed away to go get married back on Derroc's homeland.

Now, I said before that I greatly enjoyed Welfonder's other books, which I have, why this particular bok is such a surprise to me. I, personally, would not recommend this book to anyone, but Sue-Ellen Welfonder's books in general, not counting this book, I do recommend. (Just wanted to clear that up because Welfonder is a wonderful author!)

Arabella, daughter of the Black Stag of Kintail and leader of the MacKenzie clan, has heard all the stories of love & passion from her married sister but she herself has never experienced love or passion. Her father has scared away any & all potential suitors and so she remains lonely. She decides that it's time for an adventure and asks her father's permission to visit the Seal Isles...a small island that is party of her dowry. After much pleading and with the help of her mother & uncle, her reluctant father finally allows her to go. During her voyage, her ship is attacked by the elusive and legendary Black Vikings and she is shipwrecked on MacConacher Isle. As the only survivor of the attack, she is rescued by Darroc MacConacher, leader of the clan that inhabits this isle.

Darroc is mesmerized by her. Not only is she the most beautiful woman he's ever seen, but she has actually frequented his dreams as an unnamed raven-haired temptress. It isn't until he finds out who she really is - daughter of his arch nemesis - that he's torn between pride, honor & vengeance for his clan and a love & passion that he's never known before.

Arabella does not blame him for his hatred of her clan - she's heard the stories and knows what they've suffered at the hand of her grandfather. However, she is all too willing to look past that and accept him because she's falling hopelessly in love with this gorgeous, tortured man. The real question is, can he look past her blood-ties and love her for the woman she is and not the clan she belongs to? Then again, how will Arabella's father feel about her falling into the arms and into the bed of a MacConacher?

I really enjoyed this story. It has all the elements of a dramatic, Romeo & Juliet inspired tale, minus the tragic ending. In addition to the hero & heroine, there are many secondary characters that really enhanced the story such as Duncan & Linnet MacKenzie (Arabella's parents who are so opposite of each other yet so loving), Devorgilla of Doon (the magical crone that helps encourage Arabella & Darroc's love w/o their knowing), Mad Moraig (the wise old crow of MacConacher Isle that cares for Arabella), and Asa Long Legs (MacConacher Castle's resident ghost).

And if all this isn't enough, there is Darroc's quest to find and destroy the notorious Black Vikings. Not only will destroying them avenge Arabella and those who perished during the attack on her cog, but it will rid the seas of these pesky pirates and hopefully gain a nice prize from the King for him & his friend Olaf Big Nose.

The story is full of fun, interesting characters and delicious descriptions of Scotland's beauty, seas & erratic weather. It's all about finding your love, forgiving the past and hoping for a future together. It is truly a charming tale!

Synopsis:

Arabella MacKenzie, the eldest daughter of Duncan MacKenzie a.k.a. The Black Stag of Kintail, yearns for an adventure of her own. Her younger sisters are wed to loving and wealthy warriors, but she seems destined to remain at home. Her father scares off most of her suitors and has increased her dowry expecting that the prospect of greater wealth will bring out more suitable men. With the help of her mother and her uncle Sir Marmaduke, Arabella is allowed a trip to the Seal Isles. Arabella's secret plan is to visit a hermit's shrine that is reputed to help women fall in love, bear children and find happiness. The ship is attacked and Arabella is washed ashore on MacConacher's Isle. But the MacConachers are blood enemies of the wealthy MacKenzies. Their laird Darroc MacConacher has plotted revenge against his enemies for years but he can't bear to be cruel to Arabella. Otherworldly spirits intervene to help Darroc and Arabella move beyond the past.

Review:

A Highlander's Temptation combines paranormal intrigue in a story of highlander love. A likable heroine, Arabella MacKenzie blossoms outside of her father's watchful gaze. Her reaction to learning the MacConacher's side of the feud is one of the highlights of the book. I tend to enjoy these highlander novels where the lovers have to overcome the prejudice of a longtime and bloody feud. If you're looking for a fun, highlander romance, I recommend A Highlander's Temptation.

I haven’t read a book like this before. It was hot, steamy and just full of love. As always I read this book everyday for 8 days in the train and I absolutely adored it. When I had to stop reading, because I already was at my destination place I always had a big smile on my face.

Sue Ellen does a wonderful job creating this scene in Scotland, where the story takes place. As a girl who never visited Scotland, it really makes me want to know more about this country and .. the men.

There are allot of great characters in this book. Darroc one of the main characters in this book is this strong men who wants to find the love of his life and when he founds her there are all these troubles that come along. Why are we so drawn of reading love stories that are always forbidden.
I will tell you this, the love making in this story are beautifully written and full of passion. One word I will never forget is the word that Darroc uses allot: Damnation!Love it.

"A Highlander's Temptation" by Sue-Ellen Welfonder is charming, funny, romantic and full of Highland heroism! Darroc MacConacher is such a sweet, strong hero! Gentle, yet very much a Highlander, ready to defend his land and his spirited fair lady. Arabella MacKenzie is the woman who haunts Darroc's dreams. He is stunned when she appears in person, the survivor of a shipwreck on the shores of his home. Their families are sworn enemies. Their attraction is intense. Darroc knows he can hold Arabella as a weapon against his foes, but it is she who has captured his heart! Sue-Ellen Welfonder is a true storyteller, and one who embodies the love of all things Scottish. When Sue-Ellen spins her Scottish tales of romance, mysticism, and brave, brawny men and their lovely ladies, you will be swept away!

I love me a Scottsman!

Arabella was such a likeable heroine - she was strong, feisty and opinionated. Darroc, although set on vengeance towards the MacKenzies, is given the opportunity of finding love even if it is within his enemy’s embrace - will he take the chance? I enjoyed all the supernatural elements in the story - you can’t read about a Scottish castle without a meddling ghost working behind the scenes. Ms. Welfonder whisks you away to the turbulent waters surrounding the Hebridean Isles off the coast of Scotland - you can practically smell the salt in the air. This is a story about love, hope and forgiveness. If you enjoy a fun, highlander romance, then this is one you should definitely pick up. Plus, can you really turn down a man in a kilt? Yea, didn't think so.

Lady Arabella, eldest daughter of Duncan MacKenzie is lonely and longs for love, adventure and companionship. Mostly against her father's wishes she leaves home to find said adventure and maybe something more.

The sixth book in the MacKenzie series, A Highlander's Temptation was beautifully written. This is only my third time reading from the series, but I absolutely loved what I've read so far. In the prologue Ms. Welfonder writes about a stretch of coast in Scotland in such detail, you feel like you've been transported to that very spot. Her description of the places and time are a delight to read. Fans of Scotland and Highlanders shouldn't pass this series up.

Arabella is the oldest daughter of the Black Stag MacKenzie, clan leader of the MacKenzies. Darroc is the leader of his MacConachers' clan. Arabella has been protected all her life by her father and as she's reached marriagable age, he's turned away all her suitors for one reason or another. Arabella sets out on an adventure to see Seal Island, her dowry island... but there's trouble at sea...
I love how Sue-Ellen blends humor, superstition, Scottish lore and romance into a charming tale... I also enjoy the updates on the characters from prior stories that she weaves into her stories. I know when I pick up a Sue-Ellen book, that I'm in for a good read and this one did not disappoint.

Somehow Darroc has found the woman of his dreams, literally. He has spent many nights dreaming about a woman who is everything he wants and needs. When her ship wrecks and Darroc sees this woman that he can't seem to get out of his, he feels he's hit the jackpot. Nothing in life is ever easy and they will soon find out what being together will cost them.

A true romance that will make you ache for more.

Ahhh. as this was the last of the MacKenzie series, I will so miss them. I have to say Mrs. Welfonder did a great job in this last story. I was happy to see how everything turned out, however I do wish she would think of revisiting them once more maybe for a reunion book or something. For sure this is a series I will reread more then a few times!

Book had predictable plot. Arabella's character did not have the same strengths as most of the women in this series, same for Darroc's. Still a good read but did not hold my interest as much as the first books in this series.

Excellent Scottish romance -- circa 1350. Interesting story, including a lot of information about Norsemen living on some of the islands. If you love the Scottish genre -- read this.
