Jackie Ivie

Jackie Ivie was born and raised in a suburb outside Utah's capital, beautiful Salt Lake City. The second in a family of four daughters and one son, Jackie was constantly amusing her siblings with her invented games, escapades, and stories. And she was always reading. She would even walk the family dog, with one hand holding the leash, while the other held the ever-present book. No subject went unread, but once she discovered Historical Romances, there was no doubting her favorite genre.

Jackie has always been the busy type, rarely sitting still without being occupied in at least one activity, and usually more. When she was younger, it was nothing to find her watching television, while doing her homework, listening to music, crocheting like a madwoman, and reading, all at the same time.

After graduating, Jackie gained secure employment with a large service company and relocated with her growing family to the neighboring, sparsely-populated state of Wyoming. She then spent several years enjoying the wildlife, scenery, and open space that Wyoming is known for. In addition to writing, Jackie is an accomplished artist in several mediums, preferring mixed media. She has several pictures in print and has exhibited in art showings throughout the West. There was never anything she loved doing more than reading, however, and once she discovered the thrill involved with putting her own words and fantasies on paper there was no stopping her.

In 2001, Jackie and her family took a huge step and moved to the largest state of the nation; Alaska. Although it was her job that brought her here, Jackie has grown to love this land of amazing contrasts, breathtaking vistas, and the ever-present resident, the Alaskan moose. There's nothing else like it, and the very long days of summer lend themselves to hours and hours of energizing tasks, while the long winter nights are just right for her real love...writing.

Jackie has now written thirteen novels and is continually starting more. The thrill of writing has now been enhanced by seeing her actual story in print. Lady of the Knight is her first published work. It will be followed by Tender is the Knight scheduled for release this summer.

I picked this book up because the last (and only) Jackie Ivie book I read rated one of the very few 5 stars I have given a light romance. Having loved "A Knight in White Satin" so much, I thought to read more of Ivie's work. Proof that life is never consistent...

The last third of this book is the ONLY thing that saved this from a 1 to 2 star rating. The first 2/3 of the story was so brainless and silly, I was tempted to just chuck it. I'm glad I kept going because the writing and plot actually rose enough at the end to make it somewhat interesting. The most delightful part of the book was the heroine, herself. Sybil was just eccentric enough to be highly entertaining. She was so different than any other women I have read in HR that - even with the ridiculous first half - she gave me a reason to continue. Kudos for the heroine! While the story itself never could climb above average, at least it didn't end up in the atrocious pile.

This book was alright. It had some humor to it, which I liked. Something that I think could have been described in more detail is the feud between the two clans. I think not enough attention was given in the book to that and the author definitely could have done more with this. In fact, it was confusing, but the author only made it minor in the story. Which is disappointing because it makes the novel seem unfinished. The epilogue is so brief, but the last paragraph mentions Sinclair, one of the characters. He is relevant to the mystery/feud, but Jackie Ivie doesn't really address his character much in the story. At one point, Sybil mistakes another man for Vincent because they have similar scars. This character gives a little insight into the feud when he interacts with Sybil (page 233). I was left wondering if this is Sinclair? And based on some knowledge provided during the story (like near the end, on pages 319 & 320, which mentions Vincent's childhood friend Edward Carrick) if Sinclair is actually Edward Carrick and is therefore alive and well? The epilogue I mentioned earlier (that last paragraph) makes me think this. So there are definitely some unanswered questions and the author wasn't clear about this part of the novel. This leaves me feeling a little unsatisfied.
Sybil and Vincent's romance was enjoyable though. I like the way the author writes and how she develops their relationship throughout the story. Sybil is very bright and Jackie Ivie does a wonderful job in my opinion describing how smart Sybil is. This comes into play in the book many times. Vincent is described as being very handsome and is gifted with musical ability. Both characters I think are well developed.
This is my first Jackie Ivie novel and I'm looking forward to reading some more by her.

This being #5 of even more was a hindrance (and nowhere on the cover was it clear, much less stated, that it was a book well into a series). That didn't keep me from enjoying it, but there's characters mentioned and plot/relationship layers I couldn't understand that undoubtedly gave more interesting context than I got out of a lot of what was said and referenced.

Ivie's prose is interesting. It's dense and repetitive, including repeating some literary flourishes and tricks. Some to good effect, some lesser. I didn't mind that, but there were scenes and moments I wasn't for sure what was happening -- literal physicality as well as the building plot itself. The scene geography didn't always make sense, and the onto-the-next didn't always follow. This wasn't helped by the heroine being a potion maker and the hero believing himself bewitched (and at one point dosed by mushrooms).

There's also a sly sense of humor in Ivie's writing I appreciated. I couldn't always savor it because I was trying to work out what was happening and who was who, but I can see looking for more of her work, starting from the start of that series, and liking it even more as it carried along.

Good and dynamic leads; good on their own and better together. The heroine especially is a different sort than usual, witty and smart and holds her own against the braw and 'hidden depths' hero. Their pasts were dim to me--again, book five and this is the first I've read--but I enjoyed who they were as-is and how they fell in love, and then the ending they gained.

And who doesn't like a loyal and companionable wolf pet?

Bit of a cliffhanger ending, but I ignored it. Unless I chase down this whole series (undecided), I'm taking the love story told here and leaving the rest.

I enjoyed it for the most part. I don't know if the similarities to Outlander were deliberate, but there were so many...big, handsome man with a scarred back is an outlaw, his wife is a healer, he ends up being a laird (but then again, they always end up being a laird, or a lord, or nobility of some type)...anyway, I just saw a lot of simliarities, except there was no time travel, of course, and Vincent was very sexually experienced whereas Jamie was not (but he was a very quick learner).

Predictable story, but fine. I don't think we ever found out why Kendran and Myles gave Vincent the dare, knowing he would fail. I wish we had (maybe it was in a previous book?)

I do want to say that I'm very tired of these authors who write "Scottish" romances trying to do "Scottish" dialogue where they speak normally except they throw in "donna" or "dinna" or "lass". There's more to a Scottish dialect than that...

AUTHOR: Jackie Ivie has a sense of humor. Great with description of events, places, persons and things. Ah ha Jackie. I caught you unnecessarily repeating yourself a few times. Tsk tsk

SYNOPSIS -
SYBIL is talented with organization and smart as a whip. She has the ability to take natural resources and use them well in the 15th century. Chemistry, medicine and a master chef. She is VINCENT’s challenge. He must make her fall in love with him without touching her (you know what I mean) and then leave. He is also one of the best musicians of all time. IAN, the short ugly guy, is persistent about having Sybil as his wife. He causes some trouble but Vincent puts that issue to rest quickly. Vincent takes Sybil to his home where she finds an ominous atmosphere around the castle. The DANZEL and Mac HUGH clans have a dark history. The DONAL clan is in this from beginning to end. Oh, and do not forget WAIF, Sybil’s vicious pet wolf, who becomes Vincent’s best friend.

SEX SCALE: Of the following five options: 1) NOT very descriptive and requires imagination' 2) WILL make you wiggle a little) 3) WISH it was me; 4) OH boy, do not have to use my imagination at all; 5) EROTICA and well over the top
******This book gets TWO for "WILL make you wiggle a little". Okay, so the two main characters get it on. I’m afraid the detailed details will have to be left to your imagination*****

FAVORITE PART: Vincent and LSD. Totally funny

LEAST FAVORITE PART: Hate the way the book ended. Dark history between the clans was confusing. The author should have expounded upon the history in previous chapters or lengthened the book.

YOU WILL LIKE THIS BOOK IF YOU LIKE: Historical romance. A 15th century intelligent woman. A man being challenged and meeting his match. Denial of the existence of love.

This book gets THREE STARS. I like the story line. Felt the author spent too much time on some elements of the book and not enough time on others.

I really liked this story but the ending was incomplete. Such as: what was Margaret up to and what does it have to do with everything else that's going on? idk, there were just unanswered questions, though not a ton, stuff that was brought up but not really addressed again. On the other hand, i really liked Sybil and the way that she "made guesses and was right some of the time." i also really appreciate the authenticity of the language and the history. a lot of authors can't get that right. Ivie does that really well.

Bleh. I couldn't continue reading it after Chapter 5. Everything about it is disjointed and I have problem in conjuring what I'm reading in my head. Such a shame really because the story description at the back cover was really interesting. Sadly, it fails to deliver. Chapter 5 and I still can't wrap my mind around the hero and heroine. And the dialogue was awful as well.

I read a previous novel by Ms. Ivie. Irony with that is that I found out my best friend had started the same book (the previous novel, not this one).

Anyways, it starts with a poor shaken frog. It just gets better and better.
There's a revenge plot, bastards (literally), and more.
It's entertaining, it's sweet, and it's just great.

Oh, and did I mention guys in kilts?

Okay, I got some hangups about it, but for the most part I truly liked the book. I especially liked the couple, Sybil and Vincent.

More to come later.

I've read some of her other books and they were fun to read, but this one was kind of a stinker
