Taylor is living the good life. Parties, alcohol, friends, career and sex. The best part? She and her husband are kid-free, just how they like it! All that comes to a screeching halt after she finds out she's pregnant. The book revolves around Taylor's struggle to accept her new role in life and how the dynamic between her and her husband has changed.
Okay, guys, I don't particularly like writing negative reviews because I know how much work it is to write a book. Maybe I'm softhearted, but authors (usually *cough cough, Fifty Shades of Grey, cough, cough*) put all their heart and effort into their books, and I feel like an ass when I call it horrible. But, guys, this book was BAD. I didn't even end up finishing all of it.
I actually read this book a few years ago and remember liking it, so when I saw it on my bookshelf, I decided to reread it. It started to go downhill for me around page 10. First things first the main characters:
1. Taylor. I did not like her. She was whiny and a doormat for her asshole husband (more on that later). I couldn't connect with her at all.
2. Her husband. I seriously can't remember his name. While I was reading the book, I kept forgetting his name. Not a good sign. Anyway, I will just call him Shitty Husband because that is him in a nutshell. When Taylor tells him she's pregnant (after waiting for a month!), he acts like an asshole. She storms off after his less than stellar reaction to her news and he goes out drinking. Then he comes back and says "sorry" and they have sex, and everything is okay. Until they get home, and he TOTALLY IGNORES HER. For weeks. She doesn't even call him out on this. What the fuck? When she goes to surprise him at his office, she sees that he's flirting with this girl, and they kiss. He ends up growing a conscious and tells her he can't do it. Enter Taylor. She does the obligatory, "What the fuck is wrong with you?" speech and then they have some half-assed heart to heart and HAVE SEX. He literally just kissed another woman, with the intent to have an affair, and she has sex with him.
3. Allen. He is Taylor's friend and co-worker. He is supposedly straight. I'm sorry, but I don't know if the author knows any straight guys because this dude sounded like he was waving a rainbow flag all day every day. Here are just a couple examples:
Allen stuck out his bottom lie and baby talked, "Is Taylor reevaluating her place in the universe? Not feeling like an advertising princess today?"
"You're not yourself are you? Did you switch hair gel and not tell me?"
Maybe he's metrosexual or maybe he's just not a manly man. I have no clue. But the author goes to great lengths to inform the reader that he is a stud, gets lots of girls and is a total pig. I found nothing redeeming about this guy.
Okay, on to other things. I liked the concept of the book. But it was so horribly written. I didn't like the characters at all. I forced myself to read half the book and most of the time I was rolling my eyes. Finally, for my sanity, I had to stop reading.
Here are a few bones I have to pick with this books:
Taylor and S.H. (Shitty Husband) have sex ALL THE TIME. Not kidding. I swear the first 50 pages was them having sex everywhere. They even started making out with the intention of having sex in a public pool. Yuck. Thankfully, they didn't because there was a cabana (not theirs) conveniently nearby. The sex scenes weren't really sex scenes, which is fine. This wasn't a romance book but more chick lit. But they were cringe worthy. This line got me:
"His manliness pressed against me."
..........
Sorry, I needed a minute there to stop laughing. She should write a historical romance novel with descriptions like that. Taylor has been with S.H. for eight years. But apparently, according to her S.H., he doesn't know her at all. She doesn't let him in because of her "tragic past". Her parents died in a car accident which was her fault because she wouldn't get milk, so her parents did. Also, her mother had a tragic past as well, but I can't even get into that.
This is how he justifies his distance an almost affair to her. How on earth, after 8 years together, could he not know her? How was this never brought up before? I may not know much about relationships, but I couldn't believe that. I couldn't stand reading about their marriage because it was obvious Taylor had no trust in her husband. She was constantly worried that he was cheating on her. With good reason, I suppose. Maybe if it had been better executed, I could have sympathized or understood, but that was not the case.
One last thing: there is women bashing in here that made me want to throw the book across the room. Here is an example:
Marcia's sister comes over. "I know. Isn't she disgusting? She has two kids, and her boobs are still perky, the bitch."
I can understand body envy. I've even disliked women because of how awesome their bodies looked, but this is taking it to a whole other level. Almost everything in this book that involved women was about how they looked. It was so important that Taylor be fit and skinny. She gained five pounds in a month! *gasp* OMG, how will she go on? Anyone who was skinny was the enemy. She eats a lot because she's pregnant and is concerned about her thighs and face. I know this is a real thing that women go through, but good god, it was hard to read.
Everyone has different body types and metabolisms. Instead of hating this woman because she looks good, how about you acknowledge your envy, say good for her and move on with your life.
All things considering, I'm surprised I kept reading for as long as I did. I only gave it one star because as Taylor got farther along in her pregnancy, she was easier to stomach. She was less selfish and annoying. And like I said, I liked the plot. I wouldn't recommend picking up this book.

P.S. Finally figured out S.H. name. It's Jake.
