Franklin and Bear whip up their own soapbox car and get set to win the big race. But on race day the friends realize that they should have gotten some help building the car. This Level 2 first reader contains longer stories, varied sentences, increased vocabulary, more difficult visual clues and some repetition.

This was a fun story of Franklin and his friends deciding to be part of a soap box derby. There are prizes and Franklin and Bear really want to win one, if not all. Franklin and Bear build their own soap box derby car using wood, wheels and other parts they find around. I loved the humour and message at the end of the book.
This isn't one of the better Franklin the turtle books. My 3 year old granddaughter and I are reading all the Franklin books we can get a hold of and we've read this once and although we may read it again we won't 'seek' it out.
Franklin and his friend Bear get in a hurry and build a soapbox car in hopes they'll win their race. They don't think things through (which they often do in a few books) and in the end are disappointed. But instead of learning from it they tell the adult putting the race on that he should award a new award for them.
