Charles, Laura, and their daughter Naomi live a charmed life. On Christmas Eve, Charles takes Naomi into the city to browse the stores. Towards the end of the day, sadly, Naomi is kidnapped and brutally murdered. However, Naomi has returned home, along with some mysterious "others" in the attic. Charles is led down a dark path with family ties.
This book was dark. The reveal and twist near the end will have you shook. Recommend.

It had been a while since I had read a REALLY good horror book - and this one delivers. Ages and ages ago this was recommended to me by someone on bookstagram, they said it was the scariest book they'd ever read - so, of course, this piqued my interest. I looked it up on amazon and saw that the author was from Belfast, and this was the sign I needed to order it ASAP (Belfast is quite local to me). My overriding thought finishing this book was - WHY isn't Jonathan Aycliffe better known?!
The first half of Naomi's Room was downright chilling. Shivers running down your spine. Sleeping with the lights on. Regretting the fact that you have an attic right above your bedroom and considering moving house... One night before bed I had to look at photos of Barney - the cutest doggo ever - before going to sleep to rid my brain of these terrible unnerving thoughts. Another night I found myself looking at funny memes and tweets on Buzzfeed to calm myself down! As someone who reads and watches a lot of horror, that should tell you all you need to know about this one.
There are certain tropes and traits that tick my horror boxes: whispers in a dark room, footsteps upstairs, a figure at the side of your bed, terrifying imagery, an increasing sense of dread, an intriguing backstory... and this one ticks all of them! As I said before, the first half is particularly creepy and unsettling, but then it really ramps things up and the second half is just downright fucking disturbing. And I really enjoyed that aspect - but perhaps it is not for everyone.
Aycliffe's writing was simple but effective, it would be really easy to just binge this book in a sitting or two. At the start in particular he would drop little hints or tidbits that forced you to keep reading and find out what the hell happened here! My only minor nitpick is the role of the photographer who seeks to help Naomi's parents work out what is going on in this house. I'm sorry, but... WHY. Why would you do this? What was happening was fucking terrifying - he owes nothing to these people. I would be outta there. Perhaps a little unbelievable for me, personally!!
The less I say about this one, the better, just pick up a copy and prepare yourself for some sleepless nights!

OH MY GOG !! This is the creepiest/Scariest novel i ve read damn man ! that was really unexpected ! i knew Naomie ( 4 years old ) was going to die but that didn’t stop me from crying when they told her father that they found her body and she is dead and you wouldn't believe who the killer is ! just DAMNNNN

The first half of this book was scary with good atmosphere. But the second half, especially the last fourth of the book, went totally downhill and the story became gory and unpleasant. A disappointing read.

What a shocking tale. The daughter of a Cambridge prof gets lost in London before Christmas. A photographer takes pictures of the familie's home and there are more people to behold than in reality. Charles, the main character, begins some research. Who was Liddley, the former owner of the house and what has he done to his family? Can his sister Carol and her daughter Jessica helped the desperate parents Charles and Laura? At the end this story gets an extremely nasty twist. What a pageturner. You get on a rollercoaster ride through darkest feelings. Absolutely recommended. This book will raise your hair at the back of your head!

Esta es una historia que para ser justos y honestos uno debería dividir en dos partes.
Comienza como una novela cruda, emocional a diferentes niveles y que se siente orgánica. Con misterios bien planteados que te atrapan y una gran ambientación. Muy buenas frases sobre la vida, la muerte, la perdida, ETC.
Todo hace pensar que se va a destacar y que es bastante original. Mas aun teniendo en cuenta que es una historia de comienzos de los 90's y ciertos detalles todavía no estaban tan explotados.
Hay un punto, que hace un quiebre, y pretende ser una novela negra por un tramo y resulta totalmente forzado, casi ridículo.
Para luego intentar retomar en cierta forma, pero apartándose de ese inicio. Se van evidenciando Y desvelando de a poco los misterios, vislumbrando la ruta que seguirá, y también se aparta de lo emocional volviendo a los personajes en poco mas que autómatas y otros que están meramente pintados. La trama de a poco Comienza a irse en picada y lentamente a convertirse en un pastiche bastante burdo .
Con justificaciones y motivaciones del pasado muy débiles y que en buena medida afectan al presente.
Deja en el camino cosas que parecían importantes para la historia y que podrían haber aportado bastante en la trama, para sobrecargarlo con otras y luego atar todo con alambres.

There’s dark, and then there’s this book. It’s a superbly written ghost story, and the first one I’ve read that’s truly terrifying. It has a few tropes from the genre, but does them better than anything else I’ve ever read. But be ready, because just when you think the author’s not going to go there, he does. Highly recommend it for all of my friends who love horror, but trust me when I say don’t read it alone at night; because unlike the majority of books that call themselves “horror,” this book really will keep you looking over your shoulder, and hearing noises you don’t want to hear.

This was one of the creepiest and most unsettling books I've read in quite a while. It's rare these days for me to get genuinely unnerved when reading horror, but there were more than a handful of scenes, especially in the first half, that freaked me the hell out.
A young British couple lose their daughter Naomi in the most brutal and horrific way imaginable, but she still seems to be hanging around their home. Whatever the ghostly presence is, it's NOT happy, and it appears to have taken up residence in the spooky attic. When a news photographer covering the story of the girl's murder notices that his recently-developed pictures of the house show other, sinister-looking apparitions lurking about, he hesitantly decides to show them to the grieving couple in the hopes of warning them. Much research ensues. It seems this house has had a history of evil tomfoolery.
The novel is very tightly paced, with an ever-deepening mystery, and mostly maintains its eerie atmosphere throughout. There are several extremely gut-wrenching scenes that took me by surprise considering this book had the overall feel of an old-fashioned English ghost story. The latter half isn't quite as scary as the first, imo, but that's pretty standard for me with supernatural fiction (once I get a firm grasp on the nature of what's happening, the mystery and intrigue dissipates somewhat).
Still, anyone looking for a read that's both terrifying and disturbing would be hard pressed to find one from the era that fits those descriptors more perfectly. Horror can be subjective, of course, but fans of ghostly tales should look into this one, and Aycliffe's work in general.

It has been ages since I last read a good ghost story. Naomi's Room is just what I'd been missing. In fact, it's great! The story is told from the perspective of Naomi's father, who recounts how his four-year-old daughter went missing on Christmas Eve and was later found murdered. He and his grieving wife soon begin to hear strange sounds up in the attic and in Naomi's room. Before long, they start witnessing paranormal activity. A journalist confronts Naomi's father with a troubling discovery. They embark on a mission to solve Naomi's murder and determine the source of the supernatural occurrences. They both find far more than they bargained for and their lives are forever changed.
No spoilers here, but I must remark upon the great eerie atmosphere that this story provides. Then there's a shift toward the end--a shocking twist that I found so unexpected and appalling. It took the story from spooky to disturbing. What an incredibly well-written book! The author weaved a rich story that engrossed me from the very beginning until the very satisfying ending. I highly recommend this immersing tale of otherworldly horrors.

the first 3/4 of this book is probably the scariest novel I have ever read and a worthy successor to M R James. it disappointed me by being too explicit in it's explanation of the reason for the hauntings, and it's gruesome and unnecessarily nasty finale.

This had some very creepy descriptions, and some very graphic, disturbing imagery.
I didn’t love the writing style at times (“her breasts swung with the fury of her attack”, like okay lol) but it was truly haunting.

Mi reseña sería muy simple: ME ENCANTA ESTE LIBRO, es una puta pasada.
Pero creo que debo ampliarla un poco más.
Este libro lo descubrí hace un par de años. Al buscarlo vi con gran desilusión que estaba descatalogado y los pocos que vendían estaban (y están a día de hoy) a precio de oro. Peeero mi novio al que he bautizado como El Conseguidor, (ha movido cielo y tierra buscando joyas descatalogas para mí ♥️📚), se presentó un día en casa con un paquetito...imaginense mi cara 😁😁😁😁
Bueno... anteriormente lo había leído descargado en una tablet. Hoy, lo releo en papel y lo he disfrutado muuuuchísimo más al poder sentirlo en las manos.
La historia como pone en la sinopsis está relatada por Charles, en primera persona y contando como sucedió todo antes y después del asesinato de su hija. Aunque en la sinopsis nos ponga que asesinan a Naomí brutalmente y de que hay cosas raras en la casa, les aseguro que no se ven venir los tiros ni el giro que da la trama. Es realmente siniestro. Todo se va relatando desde la propia perspectiva, una persona normal y corriente que se ve envuelta en una malísima situación. Se explican los sentimientos de los padres, el vacío, la tristeza....todo ello intercalado por fragmentos que cuenta Charles una vez ha pasado todo. Es decir, narra el pasado, pero incluye cosas del ahora que te dan ciertas pistas de lo que pasa, pero no de lo que te encuentras. Y... poco a poco van pasando cosas que al ser tan paulatino y algo sutiles las vas viendo como algo normal; además de ver el declive de nuestro protagonista. Y el final...la última frase del libro es de las que dices...¡ay madre!
Es una novela cortita, altamente adictiva y tiene pasajes que dan muuuuy mal rollo no porque sean grandes cosas sino porque son pequeños detalles que van sumando y te dejan el cuerpo raro. También hay algún pasaje algo gore, pero repito que el mal rollo radica en los pequeños detalles y en el giro de la historia que es.... 😍

This was such a disappointment, since the beginning of the book was so well-done.
The narrator seemed such a familiar literary type--an aging professor ruminating over his past. The prose was atmospheric and genuinely creepy, as long as it kept its monster in the reader's imagination, where all the scariest monsters live.
The last quarter of the book made everything explicit and nasty (gratuitously so). Worse, it complicated the plot in an unnecessary and illogical fashion (perhaps because the author realized the plot was pretty typical?), destroying the reader's suspension of disbelief.
Bummer. Good horror is just hard to find.

Empecé muy bien, de hecho, la primera parte del libro me gustó mucho, pero no sé si el ritmo del libro fue bajando o si fue la narrativa o es que a mi misma la historia empezó a gustarme menos, pero lo cierto es que en cierto punto empezó a costarme mucho trabajo continuar.
Toda la historia es buena, sin embargo, hay algunas cosas que para mi gusto se salen completamente de la racionalidad, nunca me queda claro porque los protagonistas no salen de su casa después de todo lo que está sucediendo y para ser honesta el final es terrible.
Tiene ese punto de suspense por supuesto, algo que se debe tener siempre en este tipo de libros y la estilo narrativo me gustó, sin embargo, como dije hay cosas de la historia que no me encajan y en serio, ese final me dejo fría, no se si sería necesario llegar a tanto, como autor me refiero, por supuesto el escritor tiene todo el derecho del mundo de explotar su imaginación todo lo que quiera, pero como lectora que soy, pues si, fue bastante desagradable de leer pero ¿qué necesidad?, en serio, además la historia tiene algunas incongruencias para mí, pero son cosas muy pequeñas que en realidad no son tan importantes.
Toda la historia es buena, sin embargo, hay algunas cosas que para mi gusto se salen completamente de la racionalidad, nunca me queda claro porque los protagonistas no salen de su casa después de todo lo que está sucediendo y para ser honesta el final es terrible.

Terrorrrrr!!
Miedo del bueno; del que sí estás sola en casa te encuentras incómoda y mirando de vez en cuando al pasillo jaja!! Apariciones, habitaciones siniestras, casa de muñecas, niñas fantasmales, frío…
Una ambientación de lujo y escenas escalofriantes. Me parece el mayor mérito del libro, consigue que pases miedo y no es fácil en la escritura.
Una novela muy cortita que se lee en nada porque no te puedes resistir.
Contar algo de la trama es estropear el libro.
Para los amantes del terror del de verdad muy recomendable!

Esta novela comienza con la desaparición y muerte de una hija, Naomí, la peor pesadilla para unos padres. Y entonces en su casa empiezan a ocurrir, fenómenos extraños, ruidos en el desván,...
Con la ayuda de un periodista, Lewis, Charles comienza a investigar la historia de su casa....
Me ha gustado mucho esta novela, una novela llena de suspense que me ha mantenido inmersa en la historia de principio a fin, si que es verdad, que llegando al final, hay algunas escenas fuertes que no son para gente sensible, y sobre todo, me ha encantado el final.

Short and sweet. Lo pensaba más como un libro de espectros y apariciones, hasta que lo leí, y me di cuenta que tiene mucho body horror, muchas cuestiones gráficas de tortura física y asesinatos. Pero también lo combina con lo sobrenatural, así que el combo me pareció bien escalofriante finalmente.

"Like the cold, the darkness was more in me than outside me. It was my own darkness, my own night."
I've been lingering between two and three stars for some time now. In fact, the first half is amazing. The narrative builds an eerie, creepy atmosphere and as the plot thickens, it gets better and better. It even managed to scare me, which is no easy task. A good, traditonal ghost story like they used to make them back in the day. That's the main reason I decided to give it three stars. It is such a pitty for such a good half to not claim that much.
After the first half, I kind of had the feeling that the writer fell under the pressure of his own creativity. It's like he was thinking "wow, it goes so well! I need to keep it up. I need to make an equally good ending!" And that's when he lost it. He gave up on all the elements that made it good, in exchange for something quick, cheap and predictable. The abstract images that he so masterfully created (the very essence of horror if you ask me) gave way to cliche, gruesome concepts under the light of a rather cheap explanation. Haven't we seen those concepts a zillion times by now?
It's a shame. I'll say once more, the third star goes just for the fact that the first half accomplished something that's very rear nowadays. I think that this and the fact that it's rather short are still good reasons for someone to read Naomi's Room, provided that you keep your expectations low.

I love to read horror books every year from about mid-September through the end of October, when the weather is just starting to cool, the leaves are falling, and Halloween is approaching. I like to dig around online to see what other people recommend and have found scary, and Naomi's Room pops up time and again as a favorite, with lots of people saying it's the scariest book they've ever read. Well, after reading it myself, I must say that I do concur! It's very tense and suspensful, darkly atmospheric, with a creepy storyline. It's not one of those horror books that are nothing but in-your-face gore and sex with a shallow plot, like so many in the genre seem to be. I personally prefer something with more substance and less "gross" just for the sake of being gross. Naomi's Room is a perfect blending of all good horror elements, with nothing being overdone. (Because of the subject matter, though, I would say that this isn't for the faint-of-heart, specifically those who can't stomach reading about bad things happening to children). I'm kind of sad to be finished with it, because it was just so darn good. It's very short, 212 pages, so PERFECT for reading on a dark night in a quiet house, if you don't mind being spooked!

Una novela genuinamente de terror. Aycliffe logra meterse realmente bajo tu piel mientras nos cuenta la historia de un hombre cuya hija desaparece durante unas compras en unos almacenes.
Aviso: debido a que esta es una historia sobre desapariciones de niños y debido a que el libro tiene partes muy oscuras y violentas, esta historia no es para todos. Aycliffe utiliza con destreza la ambientación para llevar al lector a pasar siempre una página más, construyendo la novela pieza sobre pieza, fantasma sobre fantasma. Si eres una de esas personas a las que no les gusta mucho el terror, pero quieres probarlo brevemente para ver si puedes continuar, NO leas la habitación de Naomi.
Ya sabe uno desde el pricipio que la historia no va a terminar bien, pero la novela te mantiene con interes todo el tiempo para averiguar qué le pasó a Charles y su familia y por qué. Muy bien escrita, me arrastró desde la primera página.

Charles and Laura lead a charmed life that only became all the more fulfilling with the arrival of their daughter, Laura. She never got to lead one of her own, however, after she disappeared on a Christmas Eve shopping trip and was only returned to her parents days later and in pieces. This isn't the last sighting of her they will find and however much this initially excites them they will so wish that the dead lay where they belong.
This is a horror classic for a reason! Few novels in the genre have moved me quite like this one has and I had to set the book asides unfinished but then return to it before I could allow myself to sleep, so truly did it haunt me. I both wanted to escape from the story, once night arrived, and to see it completed so I could know peace again. The melancholy of the story was enough but once the chills arrived then it almost became too much to handle, on times. A brilliantly rendered and truly haunting tale!

Te diré que es una novela de terror perfecta de principio a fin, con todos los elementos propios del género; es angustiosa, asfixiante, terrorífica, sangrienta, en definitiva espeluznante.
Ruidos, pisadas, fotografías, lamentos, llantos, dolor, maldad, abusos.
Una novela que me ha sorprendido, por su crudeza y narrativa directa, que no escatima es detalles escabrosos y asquerosos, con un final de los de quitarse el sombrero.

Πότε κυκλοφόρησε το βιβλίο στα ελληνικά, πότε το αγόρασα, πότε το ξεκίνησα και πότε το τελείωσα, ούτε που κατάλαβα. Η αλήθεια είναι ότι είχα αρκετό καιρό να διαβάσω ένα πραγματικά ατμοσφαιρικό και... τρομακτικό βιβλίο τρόμου, και μάλιστα λίγων σελίδων, χωρίς κουραστικές λεπτομέρειες και ανούσιες φλυαρίες, οπότε τούτο το βιβλίο, που διαθέτει όλα τα παραπάνω στοιχεία, ήταν λογικό να με κρατήσει δέσμιό του και να το διαβάσω κυριολεκτικά μονορούφι, ουσιαστικά χωρίς διακοπές.
Πρόκειται για μια ψυχολογική ιστορία τρόμου που από την πρώτη μέχρι την τελευταία σελίδα κρατάει τον αναγνώστη σε διαρκή αγωνία, χωρίς να είναι σίγουρος πώς και πού θα καταλήξει το όλο δράμα του αφηγητή. Και, πραγματικά, η κατάληξη είναι αρκετά δυνατή και κάπως ανατρεπτική (αν και με τόσα βιβλία που έχω διαβάσει και τόσες ταινίες που έχω δει, αυτό είναι κάπως σχετικό), τολμώ να πω και γροθιά στο στομάχι. Η αλήθεια είναι ότι αναφώνησα ένα "Ουάου", μόλις κατάλαβα κατά πού το πάει ο συγγραφέας. Και αυτό είναι πολύ θετικό, γιατί πολλά βιβλία ξεκινάνε δυνατά, χτίζουν ατμόσφαιρα, καθηλώνουν τους αναγνώστες (όπως καλή ώρα αυτό), αλλά δεν καταφέρνουν πάντα να κρατήσουν το ίδιο επίπεδο μέχρι το τέλος, όπου τελικά ξεφουσκώνουν. Αντίθετα, αυτό το βιβλίο κατά τη γνώμη μου έχει ένα τέλος αντάξιο της αρχής και της γενικότερης ατμόσφαιρας της ιστορίας.
Όσον αφορά τη γραφή, είναι απλή, άκρως ευκολοδιάβαστη και τρομερά εθιστική, και σίγουρα ο συγγραφέας με τις περιγραφές των σκηνικών και των καταστάσεων καταφέρνει να δημιουργήσει μια αρκετά υποβλητική, κάπως κλειστοφοβική και σε σημεία ανατριχιαστική ατμόσφαιρα, κάτι που βέβαια είναι ισχυρό προσόν για ένα καλό βιβλίο τρόμου. Γενικά, δηλώνω πάρα πολύ ικανοποιημένος, μιας και διάβασα μια δυνατή και σκοτεινή ιστορία, χωρίς περιττολογίες και πολυλογίες. Φυσικά, δεν είναι άριστο βιβλίο, όλο και κάποιες ανακολουθίες μπορεί να ανακαλύψει κάποιος που ξεψαχνίζει τα πάντα, προσωπικά όμως απόλαυσα τρόμο και αγωνία. Και αυτό μου αρκεί.

La lectura de esta pequeña obra de terror es toda una grata experiencia. Por un lado, nos encontramos con uno de esos libros difíciles de encontrar. Descatalogado, los que tienen una copia física del mismo saben perfectamente del valor que tienen entre manos. No hay forma de acceder a el a menos que desembolses una cantidad de dinero desproporcionada. Claro está que está la opción digital, aunque yo opte por esta edición. Cuando por fin consigues hacerte con una copia del mismo cierras los ojos y ya solo te queda el deseo de que haya valido la pena la inversión.
Y en mi caso si que la ha valido. Hacia tiempo que no disfrutaba tanto de una historia de terror puro, sin un mínimo de respiro como lector. La historia que narra es contundente desde el principio. Desde las primeras páginas ves que te enfrentas a sucesos sobrenaturales que van directos al grano. A mi, como padre, me llenó de sensaciones inquietantes sus primeras capítulos. Aparte del terror inherente a la historia, Jonathan Aycliffe es capaz de llevarte a terrenos delicados que a cualquiera que haya tenido hijos les causara pesadillas. Y no solo se queda ahí. La historia es una narración que posee todos y cada uno de los elementos necesarios para hacer una novela fantástica de terror. Casas encantadas, espíritus malignos y sedientos de sangre, ruidos estremecedores, historias sórdidas y apariciones inesperadas...a lo largo de sus apenas doscientas páginas la historia juega a atemorizarte y, en muchos pasajes, lo consigue.
Quizás al lector de ahora vea los sucesos que se narran y sienta que ya ha leído eso mil veces. Pero que más da. El libro tiene más de veinte años y consigue el objetivo. Dar miedo. La oscuridad es lo que tiene. La has visto mil veces y mil veces te asusta.
Y en mi caso si que la ha valido. Hacia tiempo que no disfrutaba tanto de una historia de terror puro, sin un mínimo de respiro como lector. La historia que narra es contundente desde el principio. Desde las primeras páginas ves que te enfrentas a sucesos sobrenaturales que van directos al grano. A mi, como padre, me llenó de sensaciones inquietantes sus primeras capítulos. Aparte del terror inherente a la historia, Jonathan Aycliffe es capaz de llevarte a terrenos delicados que a cualquiera que haya tenido hijos les causara pesadillas. Y no solo se queda ahí. La historia es una narración que posee todos y cada uno de los elementos necesarios para hacer una novela fantástica de terror. Casas encantadas, espíritus malignos y sedientos de sangre, ruidos estremecedores, historias sórdidas y apariciones inesperadas...a lo largo de sus apenas doscientas páginas la historia juega a atemorizarte y, en muchos pasajes, lo consigue.
Quizás al lector de ahora vea los sucesos que se narran y sienta que ya ha leído eso mil veces. Pero que más da. El libro tiene más de veinte años y consigue el objetivo. Dar miedo. La oscuridad es lo que tiene. La has visto mil veces y mil veces te asusta.

Bueno, bueno, como empezar... 👻😄
Es sin duda un libro que se lee de una sentada, es agobiante y para los que somos padres puede llegar a ser un tanto desagradable pero me ha gustado mucho porque mantiene la tensión a lo largo de todas sus páginas y el final es impactante y yo por lo menos no lo vi venir. Esas escenas del desván dan verdadero yuyu aunque yo ya estoy bastante curtida y para quitarme el sueño por ahora ningún libro lo ha conseguido 😂 Una lectura muy recomendable para los amantes del género como yo. Y como me quedé con ganas de más terror hoy empiezo con todo un clásico; "El Exorcista" de William Peter Blatty

I read this book years ago and have been pimping it out ever since as one of the scariest books I've ever read. Last week I was undecided about what to read next and picked this one up again since some members of my horror group are doing a buddy read of this book. I rarely re-read a book, but this was an exception.
I cannot explain what a frightening story this is, and it was even more jolting and affective the second time around.
An English couple's 4-year-old daughter is kidnapped from a department store one Christmas Eve. Her bloody clothes are found and so is her body in an alley days later; the amount of blood leads them to surmise that she suffered a great deal. Soon the couple start hearing footsteps in the room above them and catching glimpses of faces peering out of the attic window. Not long after a concerned but intrigued reporter named Lewis shows up at their door with some photos that show two sisters, a woman, and a man in a dark suit are haunting them, even appearing in vacation photos from a trip to Egypt after their daughter Naomi's murder.
This is one of those delicious haunting stories that unfolds slowly as more pieces of the puzzle are snapped into place...and more people die. What happened in that house a hundred years previous will chill you to the bone. The ending is phenomenal.

-Η γραφή του συγγραφέα είναι καταιγιστική και χωρίς περιττολογίες.
-Είναι από τα καλύτερα του είδους του που έχω διαβάσει, μιας και δεν έχει υπερβολές παρότι ανήκει στη λογοτεχνία τρόμου.
-Σε παρασύρει στην ιστορία που θέλει να σου πει.

-Το τέλος που έδωσε ο συγγραφέας δεν ήταν αρκετό για μένα και εγείρει ερωτήματα ως προς τη συμπεριφορά του πρωταγωνιστή.
