One beautiful Englishwoman in peril, a volatile political atmosphere, and the oh-so-wicked aristocrat who offers to save her at all costs...

Lara Moore is neck deep in trouble. So deep she can fairly feel the noose tighten around her throat, but rescue in the form of one infamously charming nobleman is far from appealing. For one thing, he wants compensation in the form of sexual submission. Second, he is far too clever to fool. The devilishly handsome Comte Roussel isn't interested in being the one who pays, unless he collects back full measure.

Anton Garcin is privileged, wealthy, powerful, and thwarted at every turn in his pursuit of the beauteous Lady Edgerton. When he finally has her cornered, he isn't above using coercion to ensure seduction, but the results are not exactly as he expects. His government thinks the lady is dangerous. He discovers it is all too true...

This book truly has about every romance situation that I despise. So despite the good writing and the sexy and graphic sex scenes, I could not like it. First, after discovering that Lara is a spy, Anton gives her a choice: become his mistress or be exposed as a spy. He uses this choice to rationalize that he hasn't raped her. I realize this is considered dubious consent, as Lara really didn't want to have sex with him but went "willingly" so she wouldn't be hanged, but it is basically rape IMHO. So the fact that she just lets it go and he never feels anything but a tiny insignificant niggling of guilt over it really makes me hate him. That is not a hero. Other than the fact that his rape was non-violent, there is nothing that sets him apart from the villain in this story. They are both obsessed with the heroine and they both want to have sex with her whether she wants to or not. Even as he goes through with it, Anton recognizes that she's not willing, but takes heart that at least she finds pleasure in it.

Second, he takes a woman who prides herself on being virtuous (even though she's a widow) and independent and forces her to become a mistress, subject to very public gossip about her sexual activities and to be financially dependent on him. He doesn't care how it makes her look to society, he just gets to enjoy her in bed. And she gets irritated about it at one point, but she never talks to him about it. She's a doormat.

Third, he begins to realize he loves her and might want to marry her, but she was married before and had no children, so she might be barren. He decides to wait and see if she becomes pregnant before he decides to marry her. And he does exactly that. There is no proof of his love by which he asks her to marry him before he realizes she's pregnant. No he waits until she confirms it, then he asks to marry her.

These three things alone made me basically want to throw this book across the room. And I could have forgiven him all of it, if he'd realized what he'd done and apologized. But the guy is a selfish ass and never gives any thought to it. As long as he's got a hot piece in the bedroom, that's all that matters.

3 1/2 Stars! ~ A beautiful young widow travels from London to France to begin her life again having completed her year of mourning. Lara has rebuffed the men of Paris, though one has caught her eye. Anton is titled, rich and powerful, and devilishly attractive with a reputation from the women of Paris as a magnificent lover. Anton has wanted Lara from the moment he first seen her, and now, as a group of spies for the English have been discovered, he fears for her safety. Anton cleverly blackmails Lara into his bed, offering his protection and silence to her part in espionage. After a night of unforgettable passion, Anton quickly makes it known throughout Paris society that Lara is his mistress. When things heat up he whisks her to the safety of his country estate.

This is another very enjoyable love story. Ms. Wildes builds the tension beautifully with the political intrigue and the danger Lara has put herself in being a courier for the English. Anton is an honourable man who has no love for Bonaparte but does not actively betray his country. Lara, a woman of incomparable beauty, proves to be his match both in bed and out. Anton delights in awakening Lara's passionate nature and quickly finds himself wanting all of her for always. Their heat leaps off the pages!
