When I picked this up I had no idea what I was getting into, and once I started reading it I wasn't sure I wanted to be. Still, in the end it was an interesting look at some of the bible from an historical perspective. Not from a Jewish point of view. I may actually read it again to try and get a better grasp of some of it. Or maybe not, my reading time being rather limited. Anyway, on balance I am glad I read it.

This book is well written, easy to read, biblical history of the birth of Israel as a nation. The author includes biblical, historical, cultural and archaeological context. I'm sure most that read it will learn something.

This book needs a critical edit. Although it claims to take a scholarly approach, it continually makes assumptions not supported by the data provided. It also suffers from a lack of depth and focus. Many other cultures are mentioned in order to raise questions and then either forgotten or briefly discussed.
