About the author

Yuki Suetsugu (末次 由紀 Suetsugu Yuki, born September 8, 1975) is a Japanese manga artist. Her career was put on hiatus after she was discovered of being accountable for plagiarism, including tracing. She later resumed her work on March 2007.

She debuted in 1992 in Kodansha's Nakayoshi magazine with Taiyō no Romance. Her works later moved to Bessatsu Friend magazine, also published by Kodansha.

On 2009-03-24, her work Chihayafuru was chosen for the Manga Taishō.

I continue to enjoy the journey that is Chihayafuru. I continue to grow fond of each character, and continue to admire their determination to their various goals. I am so excited to see how this story develops and continues.

Still at the National Tournament, the team tournament day ends in frustration for Mizusawa following Chihaya's collapse in the middle of a match. On day two, the individual matches begin and in the second round Chihaya, recovered and ready to play, is matched up against Shinobu, the current Queen, and has the gap in their current skills brutally demonstrated to her. In the meantime, Taichi makes the class-B finale. In the aftermath of the tournament, the team comes home disappointed but with plenty of motivation to improve and their determination to win stronger than ever, redoubling their training both in terms of playing karuta and improving their stamina. With the arrival of field day, the karuta squad tries to draw attention by showcasing their surprising athleticism in the school-wide club clash. Finally, desperate to advance to A-class, Taichi and Nishida sneak off to play in an invitational tournament on the other side of the country, to be continued...

I mentioned in a prior review that our protagonists lose a lot and... slight spoiler but yeah, there's a lot of losing in this volume, but it's all part of the process of learning their deficiencies and getting stronger, and it showcases how they've grown as friends, as they share their frustrations and the resolve to get better, not to mention taking pride in the small victories that show improvement. Honestly, I don't have much else to say about this volume. I do want to mention how much I love how the Empress, now that she has had a glimpse of how hard and how competitive karuta is and how devoted the team is to the sport and to each other, is doing her best to become a proper mentor and supporter to the team. The other thing to mention is that this volume gives us our first glimpse of the Queen in action and she is terrifyingly talented, a near-perfect karuta talent with the speed, reaction times, listening ability, and memorization skills to utterly dominate, and her match against Chihaya gives us a good idea of the kind of wall Chihaya's facing if she really is going to make it to Queen.

All in all, to no one's surprise, I loved it.

Mizusawa high school karuta club didn’t become No.1. But they did their best performance. After that, they played individual match. Chihaya’s opponent was Shinobu Wakamiya who is a queen of karuta. Chihaya is A-rank but she couldn’t win. She started practicing more harder.

This volume focuses on tournament events that the karuta club experiences. I appreciate the addition of a new encounter, and how it changes up the status quo, setting up a new direction within the story. I think the art per usual is spectacularly gorgeous. The passion coming through in these volumes always impresses me despite being just 2D imagery and text.

The only reason it is not 5 stars is for me personally I wish we got a bit more insight on our new encounter. There's not enough information given about her for me to be super curious, and that's the issue. So far we have not really seen much. I do not need to know the entire thing about her, but enough to be intrigued about her.

There were some moments I wish we actually got to see like Desk winning his first match or Mashima getting to the finals of his tourney but they just skip out on it and make those off screen. This whole volume sets up the queen who is your standard perfectionist but hey at least there’s a new bar set (until Arata gets the itch to play again)

The baddie of them all, Shinobu Wakamiya~ Just by the first glance is sufficient for me to like her as a character! She is a living embodiment that provokes Chihaya to become better in playing karuta!

chihayas first encounter with the queen !!
this is where her growth truly starts and im so happy for it. she really needed this match to lose so that she could learn. im excited to see how she takes this information and grow from it !!
