Are you a fan of genealogy? Do you love tracing your family history?
Inside this book are fifteen short stories, presented as ‘Case Studies’ by the Maze Investigations team. If you don’t know Maze Investigations, they appear in a series of novels. In this book, each ‘study’ examines a case presented to the team by a client, with a description of how they solved it – or occasionally not! There are stories about a Christmas bride, a boy with a broken heart, an unknown artist, a nurse child, and many more. Each quite individual. Some are based on characters found whilst researching actual family history, others are just – invented! But a huge amount of substantive and legitimate genealogical research has gone into every story. Some are happy, others quite sad and emotional. These stories began as additions to a monthly newsletter. Of course, they are all works of fiction, as are the novels and indeed the investigators themselves. The Maze novels began eight years ago and now there are seven books.
Originally from South Wales, I now live in North Wales, close to Conwy and the sea. My passion for genealogy began when I helped out my mother with internet researching on her family and I became engrossed ( my family would say fanatical!). The Maze Investigations series has allowed me to combine my passion with my long held ambition to be a creative writer. I have recently added the first book in a new series. The series is called The Curiosity Club of St Foy and the book is 'All Gone'. My plan is to publish 2 books a year at least, one in each series. Update! I have recently published the fourth book in the Curiosity Club of St Foy series. It's called "The Cult of Flowers". And I have formed a collaboration with South Wales write, John F. Wales. Together we have produced a new series called "The Cardiff Newshound Investigates". Book one, "Death on a Gravestone" is now available in all media, and book two will be available shortly. It's been ten years since the publication of "Three Times Removed", the first book in the Maze series. I'll soon be starting on book no. 10. What a journey!
If you enjoy the Maze Investigations series, this set of short stories will be an enjoyable read until the next book comes out. For genealogists, there's a bit of methodology for British research.
As a developing genealogist, I highlighted the processes and outcomes that emerged from each case study. I loved how the research was indicated by, "The first step I took was...," or "Next I looked in..." These case studies illustrated each of the 5 Genealogical Standards that need to be met for reliable and credible genealogical research. In and of themselves, the case studies were interesting. I will use these case studies to guide my research that I do for myself and others. Very helpful book!
The first of this book is written in a disjointed odd flowing language or voice. I at first thought not to finish it but decided to read a couple of “cases”. Though the cases were written in a somewhat sterile format, I did find the information entertaining and/or insightful. I plan to read the author’s 1st book in the series Maze Investigations before I make my decision about the authors writing style
Short stories are not my cup of tea! I prefer long novels with extra books to find out extra stories of those characters. This book had all those characters but in a short story way. They were good but too short for my liking. If you like short stories then this book will be just right as rain for you!
The stories are short but very interesting. Some happy, some sad but none are predictable. Nice to read their backstory approaches. I’ve loved all of this authors books and this one is on exception.
I loved this book. If you are interested at all in geneology(which I am) this is a great book! There are 15 chapters and each one is a different case study. So you can pick it up at any time and be current.
Such a variety of geneological stories and a great read. They are a precis of cases that Maze has been involved in which I found fascinating. It showed me that family history is a wonderful experience to be involved in
